Ten problems related to suspension have been reported for the 1999 Hyundai Sonata. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2015

The contact owns a 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS. While making a left turn at a traffic light, the front passenger side suspension separated from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was included in NHTSA action number: ea08016 (structure, suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.

2 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2015

I was driving home from work on Jan 30th, 2015 and the car started pulling to the right. The next day, sat the 31st, I jacked up the right front of the car to see why the car steered to the right. I found the lower wheel assembly attachment to the frame had come loose. That was because the frame had three of four sides rusted thru. The condition could have caused a more severe accident if the attachment to the frame had pulled completely apart. I will check with Hyundai to see what they can do about it. Thanks for listening. Charles roswell.

3 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

I was pulling in a shopping center turning the steering wheel to the right, I heard a loud bang and got out of car, the drivers side wheel was caved in, had car towed to mechanic, he said the subframe was completely rusted and broke away from the car, and I was lucky that I wasn't going at a higher speed.

4 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2013

I own a 1999 Hyundai Sonata and was informed by my mechanic that the front sub frame on the passenger side is rusting through, presenting a severe safety risk to the driver and passengers. There is currently a manufacturer¿s recall showing for the 2001-2004 model from your investigation. Shouldn't the 1999 be included due to it having many complaints due to this corrosion issue. The vehicle was purchased in maryland and owned in virginia for a period of time. It also has been in out of virginia for the last ten years where salt is applied to roadways likely contributing this problem. The vehicle is currently registered in north carolina and the local Hyundai dealership refuses to make the repair.

5 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2012

The contact owns a 1999 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle was being examined by an independent repair shop and she was informed that the front sub-frame was corroded. The manufacturer was then notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 09v124000 (suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 125,764.

6 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

On 1 oct 2009 my son was driving his 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS from his high school to pick up his sister at the daycare just down the road. Upon pulling into the daycare parking lot he heard a loud sound and the front passenger side of the vehicle dropped significantly. He immediately stopped the vehicle and got out to see if he had hit something or to see exactly what had happened. Upon inspection the front passenger side a-frame had completely rusted out of the sub frame of the vehicle causing it to break completely off. Thankfully he was traveling at a low rate of speed or it could have caused a major accident or even further damage to the vehicle. Upon research it was discovered that there is a NHTSA campaign id number: 09v124000 that addresses this same issue, however it looks like it doesn't cover a recall of the 1999 model and when I contacted the dealership they stated there was no recall for this vehicle. You can contact me at thomas. Keyser@jcse. Mil or at 813-451-6532. I?m highly concerned for the safety for anyone that drives this vehicle and I feel that since this seems to be a systemic issue that it should be covered under the factory recall campaign as this vehicle was originally titled in missouri.

7 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I purchased my 1999 Sonata from a used car dealer & have had numerous problems with the car, its been a nightmare, one problem after another!!!! the crankshaft sensor had to be completely replaced because the component had severely melted, issues with the transmission, abs/airbag warning light on, & have had to change out the half shaft on both drivers/passenger side, numerous tires, brakes but the most severe of all the problems which puts my safety, my 12 yr old son & fiance's safety, along with family/friend's safety at risk is the complete corrosion of the subframe I too to a mechanic today & he told me to not drive this car for anything because it will result in an accident where I can potentially end up hurting myself or other innocent bystanders becuase Hyundai made a defective subframe especially for us that live & drive in hazardous conditions of the wintery/icy elements for 5+months out of the year in upstate new york!!! I will be calling Hyundai's customer assistance ctr & fuccillo Hyundai(local dealer)& the attorney general for new york. I cannot imagine what could've happened if I drove over a pot hole resulting in my tire(s) falling off especially if I was on the expressway doing 55mph my loved ones or other's loved ones, & myself couldve been severely injured or worse dead due to Hyundai using a subframe that would severely corrode the subframe especially in the "snow belt" states!!!!! I just hope that I do not have a difficult time having Hyundai fix the problem in a speedy fashion without trying to strong arm me inot paying for repairs that I am not responsible for because it is an inconvenience being without a vehicle now until it gets repaired.

8 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2009

The contact owns a 1999 Hyundai Sonata. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact stated the vehicle began to pull in the left direction without engaging in any assistance. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The failure was contributed to severe corrosion of the sub-frame. The technician recommended the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer. Also, he advised of a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 09v124000 (suspension). The vehicle was then towed to an authorized dealer where the vehicle was repaired under the recall remedy. Immediately, after the recall repair the steering wheel would not turn properly and required excessive force when making a turn. The authorized dealer was notified three times in which they informed the telephone call would be returned. However, the manufacturer had not responded. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.

9 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2008

1999 Hyundai Sonata front right wheel was severed from frame while my daughter, who is a new diver, was driving, frame was badly rusted. Car was in for service 6 months ago to have front struts replaced and dealer did not indicate that there was a problem or that they have been seeing this in other similar cars. After researching this I can see that these cars have a problem and need to be pulled from the road before serious harm comes from this issue. Hyundai should take responsibility for this serious problem. The car has 96,000 miles and Hyundai is replacing the sub frame under warranty, but my concern is that they are not telling anyone prior to failure and someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed.

10 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

I own a 1999 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 30 mph the passenger right side wheel collapsed and vehicle stopped. Vehicle was towed to local mechanic and he stated that upper control arm was rusted from the inside out and the bolts separated from the frame. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they were unable to diagnose the cause of failure. The current mileage was 69,000. It was clearly a manufacture defect. I made over 30 phones to try and resolve this matter I was prepared to go to the media with story. The manufacturer fixed my car after many weeks. I do feel that there should be a recall on this vehicle.
