My 2006 Hyundai Sonata has the check engine and esc lights come on, then the car wont accelerate as well as the rpms will not move. The car coasts like its in neutral. And today was the last straw when it decided to do it while going down the road instead of just when beginning the drive.
Under normal driving, vehicle suddenly sputtered a bit and then the check engine light and electronic stability control light came on. The car then would barely move over 15-20 mph. We found out that these are the classic symptoms of a tps issue, for which Hyundai issued TSB 10-FL-010. We have had the vehicle at the dealership for all of the recommended repairs from that TSB twice with no resolution to the problem. My concern is that this problem occurs randomly and without warning. At least twice it has occurred on the interstate, and I felt we were lucky to get off to the side without another car running into us. I am extremely worried that the next time this happens we won't be as fortunate, and someone can be seriously hurt. This is also a very common issue with Hyundais. Frankly, I would not be surprised if someone has already been hurt because of this. I am also surprised Hyundai has not issued a recall or found a better solution to this problem. I believe this is a very serious problem and urgent safety issue. In fact, we would like to get rid of the car, but we cannot afford to buy another car, nor am I too keen on inflicting this problem on some other unsuspecting person thinking they are buying a good, reliable car. Please try to pressure Hyundai to come up with a better solution.

The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically stall when driving at any speed. The check engine warning light would illuminate prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair facility for diagnosis. The mechanic advised that the main computer sensor was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 72,000 and the current mileage was 102,000.
Heard small knock in engine, told it was standard fuel injector knock. At 43k, my husband driving on PA turnpike -- knock starts pounding. But no check engine light. As he is getting off to a rest area, knock goes crazy, engine starts smoking, and the check engine light comes on. Engine overhauled, not replaced under warranty. Three subsequent related repairs. 2006 Hyundai Sonata.
S10 appropriate handling re defective engine-malfunction indicator light and erratic rpm reading involving reduce acceleration fm owner of a 2006 Hyundai Sonata lx. The consumer stated the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealership several times, only to be told there was nothing wrong. The tail lights burned out, the passenger side air bag light illuminated when the passenger seat was occupied, the esc light would blink while driving in the rain and due to the esc light being on , the vehicle would become un-drivable.
When accelerating from a stop or slow turn, "check engine" and "esc off" light come on. The vehicle acts as if it is in neutral, with no gas power or brake control, but the car is running and all other electrical functions are working (windows, radio, etc). It shimmies and shakes. You have to coast to the side of the road and restart numerous times to get it to run properly. The check engine light remains on for several hours and then shuts off. This started about 6 months after I purchased the used car in 2006, and is intermittent but still has the problem. It will act up several times a day for months then nothing. This should be considered a safety issue, having to stop in single lanes with no shoulders, on railroad tracks, or intersections and restart numerous times to get it running again. Took to merced CA Hyundai they replaced tsp wiring, which did not help. Of course it appeared ok as it takes time for the problem to repeat. Have been unable to return to shop, with the inconvenience of having to take time off work, drive 30 miles to the dealer, and pay for car rental. I live in a rural area and bought a fairly new car to be reliable. This was not it.
