Rear passenger exterior door handle came off when passenger shut the door after exiting the car. It appears the latch (closest to the key area ) is severed.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

The drivers side rear outside door handle has broken off by just pulling the handle.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

Driver side - outside door handle just fell off in hand. This is the 3rd handle that has fallen off in less than 4 years - when it does there is no way to open the door from the outside. You ask why it is a safety hazzard - when there is only one person and you go some where in the car - the only way you can get in is to open another door and release the broken handle door by the inside and then walk around and get in - this is not safe in parking lots at this day and time - by that time some one else can slide into the car with you - please look at how many people are having problems with this - most of us have had more that one break - this is way to many and the car manufacturer needs to do a recall and get this straight - a door handle that you use to get in and out of everyday (the hinge) being made out of plastic - to me if feel like they designed it to break.

This is on behalf of my elderly mother who ‘s now had 2 different outside handles fall off upon trying to open the doors. Exact dates are unknown, but we'd estimate the 1st handle fell off early 2014 or even 2013--the back driver-side door. As so many others have reported here, it simply fell off in her hand without opening the door. She was told by the dealer there was no fix avl. From the mfr standpoint--and due to the prohibitive cost of nearly $200 to fix it, living on a fixed income, she's gone without this repair. The driver's door outside handle likewise fell off a short time later, which caused much more nuisance since she was required to get in the car on the passenger side and crawl across the front seat to the driver's side. Finding that difficult to say the least, she paid $182. 63 to get that handle replaced at the dealer. Aside from being a major nuisance, this could present a safety issue since in an accident or similar situation, it could cause a delay of several minutes for emergency responders to reach someone inside. In many decades, we’ve never had any other car door handles break-but with so many complaints about these handles, it seems Hyundai must be using inferior products for these particular parts. Could NHTSA consider forcing Hyundai to replace these handles as part of a recall—and perhaps even provide reimbursement for repairs already made? NHTSA just reported an "engine recall" this morning for this same Hyundai model, along with several other model years, which will apparently result in engines needing to be replaced—perhaps they could do a joint recall to fix both issues. Although affected VIN numbers are not "out" yet for that recall, when I saw there were already 17 other complaints just since January about this same door handle issue, we decided to add our voices. Thanks for your consideration.

Failure Date: 06/21/2014

Opened rear left door and handle came off.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2014

This actually is the second time within 2 months that an outside door handle came off in our hands. This time it was the front passenger door and the first time it was the driver rear door. . We very seldom use this car except with a driver, so it is difficult to accept this failure. We are now holding our breath for the other handles to come off. The dealership isn't offering to accept ownership for repairing this. We have seen many other complaints for same. Will not recommend this model to others since Hyundai isn't being honest that this is a problem with their autos!.

I have had 3 separate occurances where the exterior door handles have come off while openning the doors. I fixed two of them at my own cost and now have to repair a 3rd. I have contacted Hyundai about a recall and they say there haven't been enough incidences of this to recall it. I have searched the web and have found many complaints of this happening to others. I have contacted Hyundai again and they sent me a form letter response that they are not at fault. I am amazed that there has not been a recall on the door handles. If you search your data base of compliants, I am sure you will agree. There resonse: dear dennis serio: thank you for contacting Hyundai motor America. We are sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction with the handles on your 2010 Sonata. Your satisfaction is our priority and we appreciate that you took the time to share your comments with us. We try to design and equip all of our models with materials and features that will appeal to our current and potential customers. Some of the factors that are evaluated during vehicle design and productions include demand, safety, durability, efficiency, comfort, convenience and aesthetics. We are sometimes unable to produce an automobile with the features and material that will satisfy or appeal to all of our customers my response back your comments are hollow and without any responsibility to the quality of your parts. "we are sometimes unable to produce an automobile with the features and material that will satisfy or appeal to all of our customers" I didn't realize that the door handles falling off of a car is a "feature". Is that a standard feature or an upgrade? I am sorry but I will be forced to communicate my dissatisfaction to all that will listen. You offer no value with your words and no help with the cost of repair.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2014

While traveling 55+mph on the highway in a curve that is curving right. The car starts to rock/sway side to side. Similar to a gust of wind blowing against the car from the side. Problem only occurs when over 55mph and driving through a curve on a highway. Car seems normal when going straight or on inside roads at lower speeds. Alignment was good, and inspection by sears found no issues. Nothing loose etc. No recall from Hyundai. This is a major concern especially when driving on icy roads. This problem may lead to an accident/crash.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

Door handles are breaking off on the back doors and the front handles are on the way out.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2013

My door handles, right front, left and right rear has broken off in a 3 months time. There was no pulling hard, or handling the door handles rough. I have one door handle working properly and that is the driver side, if that one breaks, I have no way to get in my car, I went to the dealer near me and they want $460. 00 to repair, place and paint. Am I under warranty, and the answer was no, my car has 68,000. Miles. How can you not recall, or cover a defect in a 2010 vehicle. I'm so afraid my driver handle is going to break, I am going to have to replace the handles myself if hyaundai does not come up with a recall.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

The dealer refused to perform warranty work when the check engine light came on unless I agreed to pay a fee of approximately $125 if the dealer decided that the work was not covered by the warranty.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Came out to work parking lot. Car would not start. Battery was failing, not dead. Replaced battery [with duralast battery (autozone - 09/19/2013) - $115]; did not resolve issue. Starter was tested and had failed. Replaced the starter [with duralast starter (autozone - 09/20/2013) - $267. 11]; resolved the issue.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

The door handles on my vehicle have broken without being excessively used. My front passenger side door handle broke off while my mother was getting into the vehicle. 3 months ago I opened the back driver side door to put in groceries and the handle broke. I am the sole user of the vehicle and I rarely have passengers in my car. The dealership charges $200 to repair it each time. I have researched other forums and others are having the exact same problem on the same model and year. It's a safety hazard for me because I have to go around to the other side of my car to put stuff in or take stuff out and in many cases I am in parking lots where this could be dangerous. Someone could easily push me out and/or if I am involved in an accident and have passengers, they wouldn't be able to get out through that door since it will not open from the outside nor the inside. This is getting ridiculous.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2013

I have had two other door handles serviced prior to this one. The drivers door is the one broken this time. The other two were the back door handles. This has all been within the last year and a half. This is ridiculous. I could have understood one. But three! the dealership here in st augustine, florida told me that since it was out of warranty, no recalls and it had been a rental car through the enterprise corp. Also, I had not brought the vehicle in to be serviced at a Hyundai dealership. . . That I was going to be responsible. I have read the other complaints. This needs to be addressed. I had a car fax report done at the time I purchased the vehicle used. We only saw a few minor services. There was nothing on the car fax report to indicate a rental car or abusive actions of those leasing or renting the vehicle. He says people can be rough on door handles. I said I have owned several used cars and trucks. I have never had the door handles come off even after 12-14 years of driving them. I think they should fix there vehicles due to this problem.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

As I was driving to make a turn the car shut down without warning. It has happened two other times sine this first incident. Car shut down as I was going various speeds. The cranking of the ignition is also a problem. I first reported this to the dealer in 2011. It cranks as if it is about to die then it has eventually caught and turned on. This is an ongoing issue. Since it doesn't show a code or act up when I am in for service they do nothing for me.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2012

Each door handle has broken off at least once, and two have broken off twice. Once it occured at a shopping mall where I was concerned about a man lurking nearby my car and couldn't get into the driver's side of the vehicle to protect myself.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

2010 Hyundai Sonata. 9 months old, has been in the service center 5 different times. 2 times for sensor replacement. The last 3 times, driving at a normal accelerate pace. Check engine light comes on, esc light comes on and vehicle loses power. On one of those occasions, vehicle lost power while going through intersection, and almost was rear ended. Service department has replaced many parts from throttle position assembly to thermostat to electrical wiring harness. In my opinion, vehicle is a lemon.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

3 out of 4 of my door handles all broke within a year's time. The car runs great if only you could get into it!.
