general problems of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata - part 1

The eps just came on when I crunk my car up yesterday evening. The seatvelt light been on about a week now.

The abs light keeps coming on and off. The brake lights will stay on. Today my brakes just locked up as I was driving down the road.

This started may 1, 2020. . . Rear brake lights constantly stay on when car is turned off, seatbelts airbag light came on 2 days thereafter on dashboard, then esc indicator light came on 1 day thereafter on dashboard.

"hybrid system warning safely stop and do not drive" message come up on the display. This has happened three time. The first time at a stop light, and the motor kept revving and would the car would jump forward while pressing the brake. After getting off the road, parked, killed the car and cranked it back up. The message cleared. I turned the car on and off a couple times and made a trip round the parking lot, stopping, sifting gears, etc. . . With no luck of duplicating the issue. The second time two months late, I was just parked and the message came on as I was killing it. I tried cranking the car but kept getting the error and the eps came on but the car didnt crank and could not get it out of park. Multiple on and offs the car full cranked up and was able take it out of park and drive for test spin around the parking lot, test the gears from d to p . . Never got it to do it again. A week later driving down the freeway the light came on and had to pull off on the shoulder. Turned the car on and off and all the lights cleared. About a month later got in the car to got work and the same message came on along with a check engine. The car cranked but the message wouldnt go away after multiple on/off's and shifting of gears. I should mention that when you shift through the gears the the light on the dash line up. I never have problem while switching gear from p to r or drive. Most while driving/stopping or after parking going from d to p. Looks like it will be towed in to the dealer now.

Was getting ready to move from nc to la. During acceleration all the lights on the dash came on. The vehicle was still in motion, stumbled and then died shortly afterwards. Had a hard time steering and braking, but luckily there was no vehicle around. Vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop where they diagnosed the engine as failing/seized. Recall 132 was performed, but engine was not replaced and only inspected. Recall description : gdi engine inspection/replacement. ; completed : may 23, 2018.

In motion going 20 mph passenger side air bag deployed without accident. Air bag busted on my head, back, and right side of my face. With a powdery sharp film on me. Air bag recall was not fixed by the dealership. I reported it to Hyundai which lead to countless email with no repairs made. Seat and door panel is ruined with a crack in the windshield that has spread. Engine had been stalling and producing white smoke from the tailpipes. While in motion car completely shuts off and will not come back on. Dash board lights up goes off comes on displays key not in vehicle when the key is in the armrest plugged in. Brake pedal freezes up preventing the car to start. Radio does not work check engine light blinks on and off when car is in motion. Reach out to Hyundai webb on route 30 in merrillville, in. They had the vehicle for a month due to the engine recall and turbo recall. They forced me to pick the vehicle up after having it for a month. In motion from the dealership the car cuts off. I get it back on a big cloud of white smoke produces and cuts off again while in traffic. Prior to picking the car up the manager of the shop called informed me to come pick it up and bring a battery due to the battery in the car is dead. The car is at the dealership. . . They did not have the courtesy to charge to battery to test the work that was done. I take a battery up there they keep the car for another week or 2. When I pick it up the armrest is broken they put a screw in the positive cable post to hold the post in place; I guess. There are ashes on the floor as if someone was smoking in the car, put different color antifreeze in the antifreeze reservoir; meaning they mixed the fluids that would cause more problems. I called the manager again immediately and told him the car is doing the same things. Told me to drive the white smoke out, car is not safe to drive don't stay running.

Airbag light does not go away. No accident. Headlight and brakelight burns out every 6-8 months.

When I try to press on the gas it seen like it's trying to slow down help I don't know what going on.

Airbag light stays on. I have researched this online and this is a problem that a lot of people are having. I think there should be a recall for the airbag and the electrical system. The light stays on while vehicle is in motion or idling. As far as the electrical system, sometimes it will go off, I have to stop my car, pull the fuse panel and unplug something, wait a few minutes then push it back in and then my radio, lights, etc work again. The electrical has been happening for several years off and on. The airbag light staying on is in it's second week. I just replaced my battery and the light is still on.

In July 2019 I noticed that the brake lights came on in the middle of the night, although there is nobody in the car at that time. For the next few days the brake light were tuning on even when I was not pressing the brake pedal. In the same time the electronic stability control started to take over and it refused to accelerate when I pressed the gas pedal. The only way I was able to make it work was to depress the gas pedal and then press it again. I took the car to the mechanic because it was behaving very strange. The mechanic told me that the problem is a rubber stopper that kept the break pedal in place. When it is worn, it behaves as if somebody tried to hit the break. After the problem was resolved I discovered that there is recall 136 the accurately describes my problem for my car model. I contacted Hyundai about a possible recall but I got no response.

On June 22th, 2019 I was driving on the highway in my 2012 Hyundai Sonata GLS and I heard a knocking sound under my hood and my engine light came on, so I pulled over to be safe. I called roadside assistance but the time of arrival was two plus hours. Since I was within a half mile of my home I continued on. Made an appointment with bentley Hyundai in huntsville, al for June 24th, 2019. My car sat for 2 days because it was the weekend and bentley Hyundai service was closed. The morning of June 24th, 2019 my vehicle would not start so I had it towed to bentley Hyundai. I ask chris erickson service advisor was there any service campaigns or recalls for my vehicle since I had many others for my Hyundai Sonata GLS recently. After about thirty minutes he came back and said no which was not true. Here is the proof: Hyundai assurance car care website it states; service campaign t3g dealer best practice launch February 15th, 2019 for Sonata/sante fe sport/ tucson engine dtc p1326 wiring inspection/installation and engine replacement (TSB # 19-01-006h supercedes TSB # 18-01-032-2). It specifically states affected vehicles affected 2011-2014 my Sonata (yf) vehicles with 2. 0l turbo and 2. 4 engines that may experience the check light engine warning lamp illuminated with dtc p1326. According to bentley Hyundai service department it was a switch issues which caused the problem. I paid $572. 36 for repairs. On 11/10/2019 I experienced the exact same issue knocking under the hood and engine light came on continous blinking. I was almost hit by an 18 wheeler because my vehicle decreased in speed drastically, pull to the shoulder drove very slow to advance auto two minutes away. They did a diagnostic code was p1326. I waited five hours for a tow from nashville, TN to bentley Hyundai in huntsville, al which cost me $475. Now Hyundai is asking me for $6785. 82 for an entire new engine.

My car's check engine light came on and I took it to the shop for diagnosing. The code p1326 came up and nobody can figure out the problem. My car doesn't accelerate properly and take a minute to shift gears and drive properly. There has been open communication on the issue by other people.

Takata recall I was driving my 2012 hyndai Sonata down the highway going on vacation my kids and I and it gave me a warning sign to stop driving putting us on the side of the road for 5 hours my hazard lights stop working and the car went completely dead after a long crazy night trying to get help off the side of the road I had put a new alternator and belt on because the belt caught fire but it's still isn't starting no one knows what's going on what do I do?.

2012 2. 0t limited with 95k. 12-18-18, while driving from austin to houston TX vehicle loses acceleration on the highway. Check engine light comes on, along with the emergency parking brake light (which comes on intermittently and dealership yet to define problem), and abruptly goes from 75 to 0 mph. Vehicle will not respond to any acceleration and I have to find a way from the freeway to feeder without power. Inoperable. Limped three miles with police escort. Car towed. Dealership cannot duplicate issue. I make them keep vehicle to investigate. They get a code error and change out the ecm for a mere $1400. Meanwhile, I must find transportation in a city I do not live and rent a car for a week. Retrieved vehicle. 2 weeks later, traveling to houston on 12-26, check engine light comes on, car will not accelerate; spitting, feels like no gas getting to engine, heavy smoke from tailpipe. Christmas eve, no place to stop. Barely make it to houston. Inoperable. Car goes to another dealership in houston. Again, without transportation in a city I do not live in. Faulty high pressure fuel pump. Carbon buildup. Another $1100. Prior to that, March 2017, engine failure travelling to houston. Knocking noise. Wont go. Inoperable (luckily, this one I made it to a full stop). Car towed. Waited three months for a new engine (not in my hometown). Had to travel to pick up vehicle. (car had been inspected by hometown dealership specifically for metal debris and it did not get flagged for replacement). Directly after that, while driving in austin. Vehicle stops in major intersection. Inoperable. Towed. Degraded battery cable because the vehicle sat for three months while waiting for an engine. The only warranty was the engine. Can you say lemon? the only saving grace is that myself and my family were not seriously injured when our vehicle became inoperable while driving on a highway.

Steering wheel starts to shake and rattle after renting a certain speed limit. Making it extremely difficult to keep the car on the road safely Hyundai need to stop being so damn cheap and put a recall out on this shit because I know my car is not the only one doing this, you should look it up online and you will be surprised at all of the complaints that are out there about this steering wheel problem!!.

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the traction control off light illuminated and remained illuminated. Thornton road Hyundai located 669 thornton road, lithia springs, GA the contact was advised that the failure was inherent to the model of vehicle however there were no recalls attributed to the VIN. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 79500. Kh.

I bought my car in 2015. Recently I have been having issues with my accelerator I will be driving down the road and it just stops accelerating if I take my foot off the gas and press down again it kicks back in, it did that several times. The other day I was at a stop sign and when I turned the corner it would not accelerate, took my foot off the gas pressed back down and it went. I searched the issue and I believe it is my wastegate actuator sensor. I've read several forums that many people have this issue and I have also seen several people say that it was a recall on their vehicle. I called today and searched recalls on my car. It is not listed as a recall.

Vehicle shut off while driving no lwarning lights.

I'm not sure if this is an engine problem. When I would take off in my car, I accelerate and after I started going, I could push the pedal all the way to the floor and it had no power, it would almost completely stall in the road. I let off gas and push again and it would regain power and drive. No check engine light came on, no low oil, no service lights at all. All of the gauges in the dash red great and everything was normal. I started my car one day and it started making this chirping noise, almost like a bird chirping when I accelerate, but once I got up in speed the chirping stopped. I then started my car and there was a clicking, ticking type noise that got worse after 2 days. I took the car to a shop and was told it needed a new engine. Again, all gauges are completely normal, no check engine light at all to warn me there might be a problem with my car and now it cant be driven. I purchased this vehicle new. Why doesnt the check engine light or gauges work to warn of possible issues, this has to he a defect and what is the chirping, stalling, loss of power? if my engine was going bad, why did the system fail to alert me?.

Brake lights fail to light when needed. Also, the esc alert comes on intermittently. When the esc light comes on, the brake lights do not work. However, the brake lamps have not worked when the esc is not on. Seems related but not entirely exclusive. Do know that there was a brake lamp defect for the 2006-07 Hyundai Sonatas and there was a recall. This issue has not been resolved.

The airbags iight stayed on whenever the vehicle stop. When I accelerate it turn off.

The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 91,580.

Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speeds and turning the steering wheel left and right there was an abnormal popping noise. The tire pressure monitoring system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer sport durst Hyundai 4511 durham chapel hill blvd, durham, nc 27707 (919) 489-6531 where diagnosed that the steering wheel needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was repaired however the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 118,000. Ap.

Power steering and non-requested activation of traction control_ I was pulling into my carport about 2 months ago when I lost power steering on my car. I called the dealership about 20 miles away and they told me to bring the car in the next day. The next day the power steering worked as normal so I called the dealership back and they suggested to bring the car in if it happened again. I was leaving my doctor's appointment on June 12th and the car had no power steering again. I called the dealership and told them I was nearby and I was on my way to them. I got about 200 feet from the doctor's office when my car started shaking and I couldn't control the steering. Luckily it was a 35 mph speed zone so I was able to get to the shoulder quickly. I thought the engine died but it was still running. I turned the car off and restarted it to see if the problem fixed itself, but the traction light was on and I still had no power steering. I made my way slowly the 5 or so miles to the shop. My vehicle had 54,358 miles on it when this happened the second time. Out of warranty because it is over 50,000 miles. This sort of issue should not happen on a car with so few miles and I take very good care of my vehicle, oil changes, tire rotation, brake inspections, etc. I had to pay out of pocket for the $1310. 00 in repairs to replace the upper part of the steering column where the 'power steering unit' is located. I contacted Hyundai USA and they couldn't do anything to help me. I disagree. My car has low miles and this type of danger should prompt a recall and re-imbursement of most, if not all, of my expenses. I commute to work on interstate 5 and if I had been going the 65 mph speed limit when this happened, I could have been killed and maybe the drivers around me . I am not entirely sure that the problem has been really fixed. I feel uncomfortable driving my own car.

The esc light came on on 3/14/17 and remain on from 7:00pm to 8:00 pm and then went off by itself. On 3/13/ 17 in the morning I was 40 min to work and when I arrived to my destination of work I continue to press the gas pedal while driving but the car slowed down like it was going to cut off, so I pulled over on the side of the road and cut the car off and restarted the car, after doing this I was able to drive the car normal but with hesitation. In August I was having problems with the car not starting, so I press the button for ignition but it would not start this would happen often I took the car to the hyndaui dealership and was told that they could not detect the problem which they also kept the car overnight but did not find anything wrong. My car would not start after several encounters finally I would put the car in drive and then start the car and it would start right up everyone it would cut off. I call the dealership several times and was told that they could not do anything about this problem I became very frustrated and was not help to solve this situation and still frustrated with the problems that I encountered with this car and the hyndaui taylor dealership on washington rd in augusta GA with time bring the car, money to be spent with diagnostic to find out that their is no problem and I am still having problem with this car- this is my complaint. I purchased a 2012 Hyundai Sonata from smitty's auto sales in des moines iowa on 2-24-2017 and was told car had clean title and 70,000 miles. I noticed the odo said 26,��� and asked the dealer he said it was the trip not actual miles. I was sceptical about car so I called back the next day to see if this car had salvage title their craiglist ad said clean title which was false. I was informed it was a salvage by flood and that the air bags didn't work. I was angry asked for my money back for false advertising and auto fraud they knew air bags were not working and the vehicle had outstanding recalls and didn't disclose any of this in writing. What can I do?.

When the headlights are in use, the car randomly loses power, headlights turn off, entire car just shuts down without warning, then after several seconds, powers back on. The lights, engine, everything turns off. Also, when headlights are in use, cruise control and stability do not work. The vehicle is in motion and this has happened on highways and city streets. I have taken my vehicle to the two nearest dealers and they refused to fix the vehicle. Generally, this happens when braking, using turn signals, changing to hi beam/low beam, but has also happened for no reason at all.

Steering coupling (rubber) faulty, worn, causing knocking in steering. Esc (electronic steering control, caused left front wheel to lock up while driving, both causing a safety hazard.

Last week, my power steering suddenly stopped working while driving on a city street making it very difficult to maneuver. The eps dashboard trouble light as well as the airbag and esc lamps all illuminated at the same time. Thankfully, there was light traffic at the time so was able to pull off to the side to regain my composure. Using extreme caution, I drove the next few miles back home carefully avoiding any sudden situations where I was forced to make sharp turns. I had an extremely hard time steering. Yesterday, I took the veh into the local dealership. After a couple of hours, they said the steering column had to be replaced and that somehow it was also causing all the other unrelated trouble lamps to light at the same time!. Approx. $1200 repair cost. The veh is 2012 with 82,000 miles. I asked if it was covered by the 100k mile warranty. They said no. After only 4 years of owning this car, I can't believe the steering column broke. I never heard of that before. I went on-line and noticed that 2011 Sonata's had a similar problem the year prior and as a result, there was a national recall to rectify the problem by replacing faulty equipment. I can't help but think that perhaps the same faulty equipment was perhaps installed in some of the 2012's also.

I writing because I am having issue with my vehicle. It will not crank. The battery is not dead because the lights, radio comes on, it will not crank at all I have a push botton one. I took it for a oil change on July 15 2016 and had to pay a extra $75. 00 for air filter change. Now before I got the oil change my car was fine. So on Monday 18, 2016 leaving the restaurant my car will not start. I press the botton and nothing happen I smell and saw smoke. Left up the hood nothing out of the ordinary. I read on media network, so many people having problem with their 2012 2. 0 t Sonata Hyundai, car not starting and mines is one of them. I just got the car March of last year and now the car is acting up. I don't have $1200. 00 to pay what medlin Hyundai in rocky mount can't find. The service guy says it mybe the computer of the car, when someone tried to jump start it throught it off. But I told him that before I even got a jump start. The car made a noise and white smoke came from the hood of the car. They still blaming me but I think its their fault. The services guy said that the person that change the oil and air filter the car act like it didn't want to start. So why didn't they tell me that? I feel that they mess it up or there is a issue with all the 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2. 0 t that a recall need to be so the dealership car fix the all problems free. I need this to go to ceo of Hyundai. There is something truely wrong with 2012 Hyundai 2. 0 t Sonata. And you know the dealership service don't even know what the problem is. He said it was no fuse blown, only thing they can assume that it's the computer is dysfunctional cause of the jump. But the car was smoking and didn't start before the jump. These Sonata is killing our pockets, even the use ones too expensive. I don't gave $1,000 and $1,000 to pay out, that they don't know what problem is. Got car from gabe rowe.

As I was driving home after work on Friday around 2130, I was driving on the expressway about 65-70mph when I noticed that the car was declining in speed without me letting up on the gas pedal. I was in a fair amount of traffic with a semi behind me, I pressed down further on the gas pedal to try and increase speed while looking for a way to safely get off of the expressway. The car initially did not speed back up, after approximately 10-15 seconds, it sped back up. The car did this three times during my, normally 25 minute, drive home. This was extremely scary, especially being in heavy chicago traffic. I called the dealership first thing Saturday morning and made an appointment to get it checked. The first available appointment was today, Tuesday, and I had the vehicle there at 0700. The vehicle was scanned and pulled several codes: c1283, c1213, c1513, b1102, b112, c1334, c1335, c1126, c1662, c1312, c1314, and c1315. They then performed individual code diagnostics and traced code failures to yaw-rate sensor, brake pedal position sensor and evap purge solenoid. Estimated $1276. 97 + tax.

Motor has rattle in when driving and cranking it up.

Hyundai break switch, Hyundai break lights, sunroof, air conditioning break switch gone out four times. Took to savannah Hyundai to be fixed. No fix as car continually does not accelerate in the middle of nowhere - on the highway or when getting ready to pull out in front of traffic - very unsafe. I have contacted Hyundai corp concerning this issue since 2015. Savannah Hyundai service manager mike told us that we were not allowed to return for repairs because they got frustrated trying to figure out. Break light never works. Had this repaired 3 times. Savannah Hyundai put new sunroof on. Four months later it wont open or close. We have paid for everything over and over and over using our extended warranty and copays. Even if Hyundai or savannah Hyundai previously fixed something and it was even within 90 to 120 days that the repair was bad, they never offered to fix without charge. Always made us repay full deductible and costs. . Car does not turn on air conditioning system intermittently. Trips get awfully hot. Sometimes starting up car and restarting fixes. Savannah Hyundai never able to fix. Savannah Hyundai has reported on two occasions that our car has serious electrical issues. They believe this is related to sunroof and brake light. This car has been having issues before 60,000 miles and stil lhas under 90,000 and same issues repeatedly. This car is not safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! car is unsafe. Currently emailed david zukowski of Hyundai, other Hyundai outlets, message hyunda on fb. Unresolved.

****buyer beware*****purchased this car in Feb 2014 with only 230miles on it and in sept 2014 I pulled out of my home turned right and had no issues. . . Although about 50 feet later I stopped at a red light on a fairly busy street with mid to high traffic, I stopped and once in motion, immediate my ets light came on the dash and my steering completely froze up and steering wheel lock up. I was in motion going about 40 mph, not yet up to the 45 speed limit. There were cars all around me and I had to physically force my car to right with my emergency lights on. I was lucky this didn't happen on my way to get my child from school, or after. Otherwise it would have been a completely different situation. The Hyundai corporation, has refused to buy back their default death trap of a vehicle and had the nerve to offer a "month car payment". My life could have been taken from me and they only offer a payment. Not acceptable. Buy back your known defective vehicle. I have had four recalls on this car in less than 3 years of purchase.

Car lost anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control functions. This was caused by the drivers front wheel sensor wire rubbing against a sharp sheet metal edge. See photos.
