general problems of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata - part 2

It first started when the engine needed to be replaced, I spent thousands trying to get it repaired, soon after they fixed the engine everything started going wrong ( I truly think they put in a faulty or wrong engine @ Hyundai) the car was overheating, I would take it in they would say it’s one thing pay thousands and it wasn’t it, changed the coolant that goes into the cabin, there’s always been a chemical smell since…still overheats, they said maybe it’s the thermostat, spent more money still didn’t fix it, the battery now won’t stay charged(trunk battery) not sure if they hooked it up wrong…the seatbelt hasn’t worked in years, I take it in they say it’s fine, it never clicks, I have to click it in to the passenger seat for safety. They always say it’s fine! I will never ever buy another Hyundai in life due to all of the issues I’ve experienced with mainly Hyundai dealership service mechanics and dealerships, I’m now dealing with a faulty car that could still be a great car if they didn’t mess it up, I thought I was doing right by always only taking my car to Hyundai and goodness I was wrong! there are no “recalls” currently on my car but honestly, did they even do the recalls correctly?! I disagree! they have literally lied, drained my wallet and disappointed me all while making my car worse, it’s like dr’s take these meds that might fix the issue but it’s going to mess up something else, it’s a guessing game all while killing you or in this case my car!!! I don’t know dates, all I know is Hyundai has all the records! OH and the last straw was them driving my car without my permission mint you, they took it to a totally different shop without my knowledge & had someone else repair the frame which I was unaware of & drive it with zero oil in my car which now my car has been sitting for the most part since they repaired my car(or lack there of) because they broke my car! yes I turned it in when it happened, I just never heard anything from anyone now I’m carless.

My car broke down on a busy highway during a lunch rush due to an engine rod knocking in the engine. It was a terrifying experience and even sitting still on the side of the road I was scared my car would be hit by any of the 70-80mph cars exiting the ramp behind me. I tried joining the class action suit but for some reason, even though it's the same engine with the same problem, hybrids aren't a part of the suit.

Having purchased the aforementioned VIN last month, the break lights stay on even tho the car is off, thus draining the battery. With a heightened fear of being rear-ended, or worse, for the now we disconnect the battery cable. Also, the car wants to stall when stepping on the gas pedal, the acceleration is delayed, this at any speed. Fearful of the engine catching afire, we appreciate post haste.

I am contacting you regarding the following recalls, part 573 safety recall report 17v-226 and 15v-568 after visiting Hyundai dealership twice, my car still has knocking noise from the engine, and the last month my car engine caught fire.

My car stalls, lags and shuts off while driving and has a strong scent of exhaust and uses an awful amount of oil but there are no visible oil leaks. There are no check engine lights on. I have taken it to the muffler shop who states no exhaust leaks are found. My local gateway and mike morgan hyuandi says it throws no codes when put on the diagnostic machine so I cant find out the issue. From research I see this is a common issue with this model cars and I feel this should be looked into because it is a hazard especially when it kills in the midst of traffic.

Vehicle gave a warning that the hybrid system failed and to safely leave the road and stop driving. There was no shoulder and before I could leave the roadway, the vehicle lost all power. Not even enough power for hazard lights.

My engine threw a rod at approx. 85000 miles (10/2019). Hyundai replaced the short block but since then I continue to have issues with my car. After they replaced the short block and I picked my car up, the car seemed to be running like it is not getting consistent fuel like it is supposed to. I have had it in the shop 4 times because the check engine light has come on. While I am driving, the car seems to lurch at random times and this issue has gotten so bad that this (what I call lurching) makes the cruise control shut off. One time I was using the cruise control to accelerate onto the freeway and the warning bells and whistles went off, the car stalled, then restarted itself with no check engine light on. The most recent time (10/26/20 - 11/10/20), they had my car for 6 weeks, they did not fix it. They put 337 miles on my car while they had it and I experienced the same issues I have been complaining about to them since the beginning, after I drove it 38 miles. They cannot seem to find what is wrong with my car or fix it. 10/2019 threw rod - replaced short block see attached 1/3/2020 replaced hsg belt - did not fix issue see attached date unknown - check engine light went off before they could run codes. Unable to find issues - did nothing no paperwork 7/3/2020 - unable to duplicate concerns, provided software updates. 8/20/2020 I called san tan Hyundai and told them I continued to have the same issues. I told them I needed a loaner car as I have no other means of transportation. I was advised they did not have one available but would call me when they did. They never called. The check engine light came on again on 10/25 while I was out of town so I took it to them 10/26. I have paid for 2 rental cars now while trying to get this issue resolved. 10/26/20 trans reset recycle cleared codes - did not fix issue see attached.

Was driving on major street with no warning the vehicle died in the middle of a major intersection. We tried to start the vehicle again with no luck. Gas hand showed we had gas in the vehicle, so don't understand why the car stalled and would not start again. Vehicle had to be towed home. Not sure if there has been a recall on the fuel system, however this was a very scary and dangerous situation. Stalled vehicle had traffic back up on very busy overpass intersection. Unknown to what happen nor why it happen.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. While the vehicle was being driven, it experienced reduced engine power without warning and a knocking noise was heard. The vehicle was pulled over and the engine seized, rendering the vehicle unable to be driven. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 18v934000 (engine, fuel system, gasoline) and 15v568000 (engine); although, it exhibited the same failures listed in the recall campaigns. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 134,139.

I took it to the shop and they said it may be wheel alignment or ball point when steering. I took it for a 2nd opinion, and the same thing was stated. I called my insurance geico, and they told me ther was a recall.

The gas gauge is not displaying correctly. The vehicle shows empty even after I have filled it up with gas. It also fluctuates randomly. This happens in all settings when the vehicle is stationary or moving.

At any speed the engine will return to idle without moving the gas pedal. It will do the same thing when using cruise. Pushing the gas pedal will re-engage the engine. It acts as if you take your foot off the gas. There are no warning lights and everything acts normal (lights, power steering etc). This started in mid March 2019. It is becoming a daily issue. . My wife is scared to drive it. I took it to my Hyundai dealer and they could find nothing wrong. It did not do it for them. They said it showed no codes. I keep very good care of my Sonata. It has 180,000. My dealer is noller Hyundai topeka KS.

The car will turn off while driving. We tested the battery and the alternator and everything else that will be the issue but everything is working fine and maintenance is up to date. We dont feel safe driving the car.

Steering has a clunking/clicking sound when turning left or right. It has gotten worse from when I noticed it. At first I could hear a faint rattling sound when going over bumps in the road (more noticeable in colder time of the year). Now for the past 2-3 years it’s very noticeable and makes clunking like noise every time turning even when parked. When I first heard the faint noise my mechanic couldn’t hear it. He said I have to hear it to know for sure but said it’s possibly the steering column and at that time he priced it at $500 I’m sure it’s more now with this economy. I didn’t get it fixed bc he wasn’t sure and I didn’t want to pay to get it fixed if that wasn’t the problem. I had no idea I could file this complaint otherwise I would have done it sooner! this problem started January 2019. Also the gas gage will blink and say I have no gas even tho I filled up. The sensor to gaging the gas I believe is faulty. Hard to show a mechanic because it does it randomly starting the car, while driving, after filling up to name a few. Then the lines will fill in while driving, stopped at a traffic light/stop sign, starting the car. It will stay good for a while and act up again. This has been doing it so long I’d say it started a few years after owning so around 2015 about 45,000 miles. I’m lucky that I have jobs 5-10mins from my home I haven’t put on miles that most do. Again I would have put in a complaint if I knew of this site. Anyone driving this car could cause an accident if it runs out of gas in the middle of driving.

"fire hazard" received an engine replacement under Hyundai engine recall, I picked-up the car on 09-13-18. I've had several problems occur in the last few months. One of the main issues is a fuel/gasoline smell inside the cabin and around the engine compartment. Now there is extremely strong smell of gasoline whenever I just turn on the ignition without starting the car. I also notice that there was a puddle of gasoline on the ground under the engine area. I read that some cars are catching on fire after Hyundai replaced the engines under the engine recall. My concern is for safety of my family. There is potential that my car may/will catch on fire. The car has not been driven in over three weeks. I've filed a complaint on 12-03-2018 with Hyundai motors(case # 13222827) but have not received any updates as of yet.

My car was in motion when headlights started dimming then car lost power and was begigging to stop. . Kept depressing gas pedal and car then started moving again. I was traveling on a main road in left lane when this happened which could have been a major accident. Also have numerous brake light bulbs replaced and key fob will not be recognized to start car but car will start when keyfob inserted into charger in miiddle console. Key fob will work to open and lock door but not for starting car.

After my engine short block was replaced the car started to have acceleration problems and next is starting to smell like rotten eggs. The smell starts when you start up the car comes through the air vents and after you park the car to stay at smell stays in the car for least 5 hours later. Also the gas gauge and the mileage are not coincide with each other one says one thing and the other says another my gas light comes on at 56 miles left to empty sometimes it comes on that 40 sometimes it comes on at 50.

On July 15th 2018 at 10:30 am while driving at 35+ mph the car started smoking from the hood area, after pulling over I noticed it was smoking quite heavy, I raised the hood and the engine was on fire. . . Hyundai of canada refuses to respond to my requests for compensation. . .

Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that whether the vehicle was being driven or stationary, there was an abnormal gasoline odor in the vehicle. The contact stated that it became difficult to breathe and had burning eyes. The vehicle was taken to abc Hyundai located at 6825 redwood st, las vegas, nv 89118, (702) 475-8698, to be diagnosed. The mechanic was unable to pinpoint the cause of the fuel odor. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided case number: 11389896. The approximate failure mileage was 12,000. Ah.

While the vehicle was stationary (idle at a stoplight), the vehicle turned off without warning. The vehicle then had difficulty starting after the incident - leaving my car sitting idle in a busy intersection. In addition, due to the same mechanical error, my car while in motion (on a highway going about 65mph), the car had difficulty maintaining engine power and "sputtered" several times before resuming normal performance. This resulted in my car moving at speeds that were under the posted speed limit, causing vehicles behind me to have to brake quickly to avoid rear-ending me. Finally, again due to the same issue, the car had difficulty starting (while not in motion).

I scanned and I got this c1202 and also p0087.

On interstate driving and car lost power with no warning.

While driving or stationary the gas hand goes down from 367 to 0, ----- when I know there is gas in the car, sometimes the gas hand will come back up to where it belongs and when it does not come back and you keep on driving the engine light comes on. Once you fill the car back up about $4 worth that is all it will take drive the car for about an hour the engine light goes out, but the gas hand still will go to empty after you reach about 300 gas to empty.

My code check at a goodyear dealer showed code p0087, a problem associated with the fuel delivery system in my Sonata. The car loses power when driving by not accepting gas to increase the speed. The goodyear dealer told me he has seen this problem on numerous Hyundais.

While driving and I press the gas peddle to pass another vehicle, the engine will not accelerate, but the engine rpm goes up.

Our car accelerated with out contact of the gaspedal causing collision with 3 parked vehicles. Extensive damage to our Sonata.

Driving and vehicle lost power. Could push accelerator to the floor and there was no response. Happened while driving straight at highway speed and the car remained running but no accelerator response. Pulled to the shoulder and the car sputtered and acceleration control returned but car was running very poorly and acceleration control came and went. Obd2 code p0087 was read when check engine light came on the next day when trying to start the vehicle. All starts since the incident have been hard starts. The wastegate actuator sensor rod retainer clip was found to be missing, it was replaced and the sensor was tested to ensure correct voltage (between 3. 9 and 4. 1). Obd2 code was cleared and car ran ok for a test drive but the following day, all symptoms had returned and we again experienced no accelerator response. Retest of the wastegate actuator indicated the the voltage was still in range. This is a dangerous condition because it results in complete loss of accelerator control.

Car just stalls out. Also clanging of metal sounding under car; no leaks.

When stopping or pulling out when depressing gas pedal it will not accelerate from time to time im afraid to drive the car due to trying to pull out if it doesnt go I could get hit by un coming traffic,also there is something wrong with electrical system I have change one light every month since I have owned the car either a headlight brake light or tail light.

Complete and total motor falure while driving at highway speed. Previously needed fule pump replacement. Cv joint (axel) failed prematurly.

The has to be something wrong with lighting or electrical system on my car. I have had to replace every headlight, taillight, brake light and license plate light, not once but several times for each one. Must have replaced 16 to 20 lights. Now the horn keeps blowing. I have had to disconnect the battery cable so it doesn't wake up the whole neighborhood. . I am taking it in to the dealer tomorrow. I would appreciate any feedback or if anyone else is having these problems. . This is not normal. Also, it loses power as I am driving. Feels like it is going to stall out, but then takes off again.

I was driving down the street and there was a loud noise from engine. All my dashboard lights came on. I lost all power in vechicle.

Also, the sockets melted on both sides of the rear tail lights. The rear passenger side light had to be removed to prevent the middle rear brake light from remaining illuminated. The rear driver's side tail light was operable, but eventually shorted out as well. The contact ordered replacement tail lights three times, but the failure recurred each time. In addition, the contact heard a loud noise concerning the fuel system. When turning the steering wheel in either direction, the contact heard an abnormal noise intermittently. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 18v137000 (seat belts and air bags) and 18v934000 (engine, fuel system, gasoline); however, the contact did not receive any notifications. Mcgrath city Hyundai (6750 w grand Ave, chicago, IL 60707, (773) 889-9090) was contacted, but had not diagnosed or repaired the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

While in motion at low speeds, the car failed to accelerate and the engine performance was extremely poor. After slowly accelerating, the car would then "sputter" and the engine would lose power (while the car was in motion), causing the car to nearly stop on the road without warning. This caused traffic to back up on the road, and forced cars behind my vehicle to slam on their brakes so as not to rear-end my vehicle.
