1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2026

I contact the Hyundai dealer about my 2016 Hyundai Sonata. For all I know those vehicles have recalls with engine failure/stalling due to premature rod bearing wear, fire risks from malfunctioning electric oil pumps. My car is having those exact problems with the abs lights being on and is also have problems with the vvt sprocket. And the oil I called Hyundai and they said my vehicle only has a recall with the junction box. But my car is unable to go over 60. And is unsafe to drive and the recalls with that type of model car is the same recalls I am having and soon as I've bought the car and had it for some time I am starting to have those problems so I would like to know what’s going on because it is unsafe and I can’t even drive my vehicle I also have a blinking check engine light. I’ve wanted to report this now incase risk of a fire because I’ve did my research and realize these cars that have these type of problems are known for catching on fire.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2026

I began braking and the brakes locked up. Braking to the floor and the car would not stop resulting in a car crash.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2026

Vehicle: 2016 Hyundai Sonata VIN: [xxx] while stopped in traffic with my foot firmly on the brake, my vehicle begins to accelerate before I release the brake pedal. This is not normal “creep” — the engine increases rpm and the vehicle moves forward as if the accelerator is being applied, even though it is not. This condition has occurred multiple times and creates a serious safety risk. The vehicle surges forward, sometimes 20 mph, unexpectedly and has almost caused several collisions. This rapid acceleration can easily cause a collision with a pedestrian or the vehicle in front of me. The onboard diagnostic system repeatedly reports a camshaft position sensor fault. The sensor has been replaced, but the problem returned, indicating the issue is not the sensor itself but a deeper engine or electronic control malfunction. Because this vehicle uses electronic throttle control, I am concerned the engine control module is misinterpreting throttle and brake inputs and failing to properly apply brake-throttle override. The vehicle is effectively accelerating against the brake. This is a dangerous and unpredictable condition and represents a potential defect in the throttle/engine control system. This is clearly a safety-related issue that warrants investigation before it results in a serious crash or injury. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2024

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata hybrid. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the parking brake light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the abs control module was faulty and needed be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 149,000.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2024

My engine block or engine has a hole in it. All of my oil came out and my vehicle shut off. My brakes as well is not hard when pressed on, so I would have to pump it till it hardened. My safety and others safety was at risk while I was driving because my vehicle was not coming to a complete stop which could have resulted in a serious or fatal accident. As well as my engine block blowing making all the oil in my vehicle leak all on the road while driving on a busy road. Yes the problem has been confirmed but I was told that my car does not fall under the cars listed with the same issue on the recall list. No it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or police or insurance rep because I am being told I have to pay out of pocket and I am not able to afford the prices being told to me for an issue that I have not caused. There were no warning lamps or anything prior to this incident. I have went to many different mechanics for a diagnostic for my vehicle but they all say my vehicle is fine or they do not know what I am talking about.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2024

I was driving as normal and twice about 3 min apart from each other my car went into emergency braking and stopped sudden. No red lights no warnings nothing. Also periodically my car dashboard lights will come on while driving filtering through all the hazard checks. Sometimes it stays on and sometimes it don't. Eventually dash goes back normal. Again all with no warning. Very scary.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

The blind spot detection system needs alignment. When the blind spot detection fails it disables traction control and anti-lock brakes. The parking sensor and backup sensors should have nothing to do with the antilogue brakes or traction control. Since these items are disabled traction does not exist and anti-lock brakes are ineffective.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

I am reporting multiple serious issues with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata sport 2. 0, which has only 30,000 miles. Despite the low mileage, the vehicle is experiencing major safety and quality problems. The electronic stability control (esc) light stays on constantly, indicating a system failure. On startup, the car sometimes applies the brakes by itself, and there’s a loud noise like something is stuck or grinding. The traction control light also comes on during this. While driving, the car will suddenly slow down on its own, even when I’m not braking. When I press the gas pedal, it barely responds or takes too long to accelerate. Sometimes, this happens at the same time as the esc warning, which feels extremely unsafe — especially on highways or in traffic. The push-to-start button often delays before the engine turns over, which is abnormal. The a/c system only blows warm air, regardless of temperature settings, and no cold air comes out. I also have a serious issue with the paint peeling off in large chunks from the body of the car. It’s happening despite proper care, and I’ve seen other Hyundai Sonatas of the same year with the same issue, which suggests a widespread paint defect. These issues have not yet been diagnosed by a dealership, but given the low mileage and frequency, I believe this model may have serious defects in safety systems and paint quality. I’m very concerned for my safety and request a full investigation.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2023

My husband (scott) was driving the car on florida highway 408 eastbound approaching the exit 21 on 10/12/2023 around 8 am. Scott heard something pop suddenly and saw fire shooting out from both sides of the car in the rearview mirrors. Upon noticing the fire, he tried to slow down to pull over the car, but brakes failed (went to the floor). A police officer on the road happened to see the fire so he drove next to my husband's car and scott yelled at officer that he had no brakes. The officer went ahead of scott to help scott's car slow down. When approaching uphill slopes by the exit, scott was finally able to use the emergency brakes to come to a complete stop. The fire engine came right away and put out the fire which took over 20 minutes. My husband is handicapped and him walking away from such car catastrophic fire unharmed was near miracle. Two weeks before the fire, I happened to take the car in for checkup at greenway Hyundai orlando and the 2. 5 hour inspection found nothing wrong with my car. I wanted my car checked because my car stalled briefly pulling out of a parking space a few days earlier.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2023

Bought the car on 08/20/2022. On 09/07/2022 we took the car back to allen turner because the engine light was flashing and the car would not go over a certain speed. There were metal shavings in the oil. It was throwing code p1326. They did an update on car and told me the cylinder walls were scored but the motor had a lifetime warranty no matter what happened to it. Every time we would have the oil changed, we would have to add 3 quarts of oil every 10-15 days. The vehicle stalled out at a very busy intersection nearly causing a wreck with my teenage daughter driving. Had it towed to dealership and they said it needed a new motor because it has one of the defective motors in it according to the VIN. Then they told me it was oil consumption and they could replace spark plugs and oil and it would be drivable but it would stall, it would break down and the motor will seize. It is only a matter of time. Hyundai will not honor the warranty on it because the motor is not seized up. The service manager told me to drive it until it seizes and then they would cover the engine replacement. The vehicle is not safe to operate. It is a safety hazard for anyone to drive. Hyundai will not stand behind their products when they already know it is defective.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2023

While driving on the highway, there was a sudden beep sound followed by the abs light, the brake lights turning on, and the traction control light turning on. The vehicle keeps moving and the breaks are not working, and the brake pedal is too tight to press. To avoid a collision on the highway, I used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle if I turn off the engine and then turn it back on, I can drive, but again the same problem begins, and we must use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. A local Hyundai dealer has been notified about this issue, but it has been 3 days since they have not been able to resolve it.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2023

I am writing to bring to your attention a critical issue affecting my 2016 Hyundai Sonata 4 door sedan, that warrants investigation and public awareness. Hyundai cars are currently plagued by engine oil consumption problems that ultimately lead to engine failure, due to there being no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This is a concerning issue that remains largely unknown to most customers. When these issues arise, car owners such as myself, are often left with uncooperative dealerships that either deny the problem or offer minimal assistance. Even Hyundai corporate and extended warranties fail to provide adequate support, frequently citing owner negligence as a reason for denial. This occurs despite the fact that engine sludge buildup is inevitable, even with consistent car maintenance. Furthermore, I am forced to endure long waiting times for my 2016 Hyundai Sonata 4 door sedan, that has been inspected and, then denied for an engine replacement, and face additional months of delay for them to explain why. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of loaner vehicles and no assurance of rental reimbursement. This leaves countless individuals burdened with repair payments for stranded vehicles. My personal experience has been with ourisman Hyundai, and many others have voiced similar grievances. Numerous complaints have been filed with the better business bureau (bbb) and the national highway traffic safety administration (nhsta), yet little action has been taken to aid the thousands of people who are experiencing the same problems to rectify this issue. It is imperative that attention is drawn to this matter as Hyundai's approach to selling cars with hidden engine issues puts customers at safety risk and places them in dire and deadly harm. I implore all news media outlets to conduct an investigation into these concerns and help shed light on a situation that demands immediate attention.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2023

This vehicle had a complete engine failure. Since it is a hybrid, when the engine shut down, the vehicle lost all power. The driver had no control over steering or brakes. The vehicle crashed through three trees and into a house. Hyundai motors of America and NHTSA are aware of the issues with this vehicle's engine, however, this engine was already replaced. The problem was that the "limp mode" did not enact in this specific car. I brought this to Hyundai's attention at least 20 times and expressed my concern about the threat this vehicle posed to me and anyone else on the road, yet they continued to ignore me or attempt to rectify the issue. This vehicle was part of the class action lawsuit. I was told, after the seventh time the vehicle broke down (fourth time after engine replacement) that Hyundai would buy back the vehicle. That never happened. The vehicle shut down without "limp/safe mode", with an entire loss of power eight times and was brought into the dealership. Hyundai refused to help me. I knew it would end in disaster, and it did. I'm sure my vehicle is not the only one that does not have a safe mode taking effect when the power shuts off and there is no steering or brakes at 70 mph. I am using the date for the last time the vehicle shut off and the driver lost control and hit a house. However, there are eight other times this happened. I have more information and documentation if needed. I'm attaching my first claim, documents collected after that claim, the accident report (did not have photos attached, the photos are from the scene when I went there the next day), and all email conversations with Hyundai since the first engine failure. My big concern here is that even though Hyundai did try to repair the recall issues, they ignored everything else. I told them over and over that the limp mode did not work. This made it morally impossible for me to sell, even if I wanted to. They refused to help. I worry there may be others out there with this issue.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Upon entering the roadway, both of my brake taillights went out on my vehicle. The left, driver side bulb had been replaced within the last year, however, both brake lights stopped working at the same time. This happened in front of an officer who then pulled me over.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2023

I just got my car out the shop on April 29th at a Hyundai dealer and on may 2nd was driving on highway my check engine came back on and my speed decreased on its own almost causing a wreck then my car would only go 20mph in a 70 mph zone I have contacted Hyundai they refuse to do anything.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2023

Please contact me for more details on issues and info on this dealership (kendall hyndai in miami I know there something wrong with the way they’re responding to this very dangerous brake issue’s before it cause l serious injuries or. Fatalities took the car to dealership with an abs light on and stop check brakes light as well had total brake failure after running diagnostic the said I need to change the pressure source unit which cost me 4k after picking up vehicle and driving a few mile had same issue happen they said I need to change both rear bearing sensors which is another. 1500 iam feeling like this is a very serious issue and the are just charging me as much as they can . I called another dealer close by and found that they charged way less labor and parts fees example ~ was charged 289 an hour other dealer 190 plus less hour as well the parts were same issue paid 2159 for pressure source unit and other dealer was 1900 plus a shipping fee of 100 to get it faster the other dealer said the don’t charge for that in other words the dealer I went to kendall hyndai was way over charging for every aspect of my issue this unexceptable to me and should be looked into!!!! this more importantly is a dangerous problem when you lose breaks unexpectedly which could cause serious bodily harm to one self and the second part of the dealer charging way more than reasonable prices is also unbelievable and disturbing as well.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2023

Abs system lights up and stop car and check brakes flashes loss of brakes completely!!!!.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2023

I am reporting multiple safety-related problems with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata sport 2. 0 that have become progressively worse and may pose a serious danger. The electronic stability control (esc) warning light starts blinking during startup, then remains solidly illuminated while driving. This indicates a persistent fault in the stability system. The car also frequently slows down or brakes on its own, without any input from me. This happens especially right after starting the car or while driving in traffic, and has caused multiple near-accidents. These issues first appeared around two years ago, but they used to happen occasionally. Over time, they have become more frequent, and now they occur daily. There is also a grinding or dragging noise when the vehicle starts or moves at low speed, and it often hesitates when trying to accelerate. These symptoms create uncertainty and make the vehicle feel unsafe to operate. Inside the car, the dashboard has severely cracked, with deep, wide splits across the top panel. I’m concerned this could interfere with airbag deployment or reflect light dangerously while driving. On the outside, the paint is peeling off in large chunks, and I’ve noticed the same problem on other Sonatas of this model. This suggests a wider manufacturing issue and raises concerns about long-term durability and corrosion. These problems have not been confirmed by a mechanic yet, but they are consistent, worsening, and clearly pose a safety risk. I have recorded a video that shows the esc warning and the sound it makes, which I am including for reference. Video evidence of esc malfunction and mechanical noise: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2023

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2022

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact stated that the valve cover was leaking and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the vehicle was not safe to drive due to the brake booster needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but continued to leak oil. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer for regular maintenance and was informed that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The contact was informed that the camshaft and electrical continuously variable valve timing actuator seal plug needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2022

Had previous issue with hev warning light and took to dealer. But while driving down the road last night, the hev light on the dash comes on and beeps, the car sputters then the brakes slam on and the car immediately shut off in the travel lane. Turn car back on put into drive and same thing happens. Vehicle was towed to dealer.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2022

Abs light has been on since the car had under 40k miles on it. . . I took it in and they won't repair without cost to myself although my car was under warranty. I had it looked at again at 79k miles and they still won't do anything about it. This also affects (according to them) how the transmission shifts which is a really hard shift when accelerating. I have had animals (deer and dogs) jump in front of me while driving and my brakes lock up and cause me to swerve out of control.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2022

The contact called on behalf of the driver. The contact owned a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while the driver was driving approximately 30 mph the vehicle braking system functionality completely failed. Then shortly after there was smoke exhausted from the hood. There were no warning lights. The driver was able to cruise to the nearest parking, got the vehicle down to 5 mph, and forced the brakes on. Upon exiting the vehicle the smoke became more intense and extinguished in the cab. The vehicle was destroyed by the fire. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. There was a police report filed. There were no major injuries; just minor smoke inhaled. The vehicle was towed to the wreck yard. There were no medical reports. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2021

As I was driving the car to a vacation resort, the car caught fire and was completely destroyed. Myself, adult son, and wife were in the car at the time. We were luckly to get out of the car before it blew up and killed us all. The car was melted down and completed destroyed. This event happened on may 2, 2021 near pooler, GA. The only warning sign was smoke, then flames. We lost engine, brakes and control. We hit a light pole to stop the car. Police reports and fire department reports were filed.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

The said they replaced the entire abs system but there is no record of it. They said they put all new brakes lines on. They gave me my car back both times and I avoided a few major accidents. 26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2021

While driving car loses power, foot is on the gas car will not move. Then jerks. Car is in reverse and it still moves forward.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

Parking break light not showing when it is applied my car is a hybrid and that's why dealer said recall no 164 doesn't apply to my vehicle, even though I have the same problem and same vehicle only because my vehicle is hybrid dealer refused to repair my car.

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2019

Rear brakes are never applied evenly. Every time car brakes it lurches forward between times when it feels like the brakes are engaging. This happens when the vehicle is in motion on both city streets and highway. When going above 45 mph the steering wheel will also shake after brakes are engaged.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

I have been experiencing an intermittent braking issue when I press on the brakes, the pedal gives resistance and won't fully engage until I let my foot off the pedal and press again. This issue has been going on for 5 months now, I've taken it to the local dealership and another brake shop, no one has been able to diagnose an issue. Also no warning lights appear.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2019

I was driving west on a four-lane road going 40-45 mph, no one in front of me, when suddenly the automatic emergency braking system engaged on its own without any warning, stopping the car immediately and abruptly, enough so it threw articles on my front seat into the floorboard. Antilock brakes engaged at the same time shaking the car to a stop. Thankfully no one was immediately behind me and thankfully I was not on an interstate going 70 mph! took it into the dealership that day, they kept it overnight and they could not find anything wrong. After reading that other 2016 Sonatas had done the same thing, I told the dealership I did not feel safe driving the vehicle and did not want it any longer. They referred me to Hyundai corporate who denied my claim because testing came up with no defect, and I assume is going to put it right back out on the streets!! I had no choice but to trade it in and get another Hyundai, since I would not feel comfortable selling it outright to someone else knowing this had happened. I am very disappointed with corporate for allowing this vehicle to remain on the roads when this is obviously not the first complaint like this in the 2016s.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2018

Ii own a 2016 Hyundai Sonata hybrid with 34,000 miles. I have had no problems with the car until the incident that occurred on Aug 5, 2018 while driving on three lane highway 99 north of modesto. At about 70mph the dashboard lite up with brake system warnings. At the same time, the engine shut down. I struggled in traffic to move to the side of the road and got to the apron and found I had no brakes but managed to stop. I turned the ignition off and visually inspected the car, especially the brakes. Seeing nothing, after a few minutes, turned it back on. The engine started but the warning lights remained on. I had brakes and slowly drove to an off ramp to get help. After getting off the highway, I stopped and again turned the ignition off. When I turned it back on, all systems were good. I drove over 100 miles home without problems. I immediately took the car to my dealer, alexander Hyundai, oxnard CA. After 2 days, they found no faults but in consultation with Hyundai support, decided the problem was with the hydraulic braking system and performed the Hyundai recommended service. I have serious concerns about the safety of the car based on the service performed. I was not using the brakes at the time of the shutdown and wouldn't expect it to fix itself. I would not expect the problem described to cause an engine shutdown creating a serious safety hazard. I received no assurances that it would not occur again. There should be a limited number of faults that create an immediate shutdown and the fault described should be not be one of them. The dealership claims they have done everything they can and did what Hyundai technical support recommended. They provided no evidence their service revealed anything wrong with the brake system. Since they have done what the Hyundai corporation prescribed, they feel no liability or concern for my safety.

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2017

While the vehicle is in motion and when I hit the brake. A click noise is always coming when we hit the brake till the end. Always happening observing from past 2 months. The other problem is when we hit the brake and and hold the shift knob it is making tick tick noise. Always happens when I showed to the mechanic they are saying it is normal because they have to do it for free of charge. Hyundai gives warranty but the dealers neglect to do. I am getting a mileage of average 10 miles if I even maintain a speed of 45-50 mph. If I put 14 gallons of gas I get hardly 225 miles and I have no problems with the car and I change the oil before the service interval.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2016

11/18/2016 - I backed out of my driveway and was slowly accelerating up my rural street when the car suddenly braked hard of its own accord and made a clunking noise. No instrument panel indication was provided as to why this occurred. This was not driver error as my foot was still on the accelerator. I was driving straight ahead - not turning - no other cars were in the vicinity. 11/21/16 - while driving, the car drove sluggishly (almost like the parking brake was on). When I pulled into my driveway, I again heard a clunking sound. When I opened my door there was a pronounced burning smell and the rear wheels were too hot to touch. Again, there were no instrument panel lights to indicate any issue. The car has been operating normally since these incidents. I have been unable to replicate these issues. This car has had a series of unexplained electrical issues. The cause of the problems described is unknown. My wife and I found these events frightening and a safety issue in a car with less than 5,000 miles and less than 3 months old.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

Takata recall. My foots sometimes brushes a fuse box that is mounted above the gas/brake pedals, causing me to lose a split second in going from gas to brake. I only have a size 10. 5 shoe. Did not have this problem with my 2011 Sonata. Much more foot room down there on 2011 model. Service dealer said nothing can be done.

35 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2016

Around 10pm I was driving with one passenger straight down a local suburban street. There were no other cars nearby on the road nor were there any pedestrians in the vicinity. Abruptly, without any warning, the car gave off a beep and brought itself to an immediate stop in the middle of the road without any interaction from me at all. The road in front of the car was clear and following the stop no warnings were displayed on the dashboard indicating a reason for it or a malfunction in any of the systems. My passenger and I were extremely fortunate that there was not a car coming up behind us because this immediate unintended stop for no reason would very likely have caused an accident.
