1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2026

Here is your updated review with that included: ? I am very disappointed with Hyundai motor America and the service I received at Hyundai of renton. I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata and received a letter about a required software update and ignition cylinder protector due to known theft issues. I went to the renton dealer for the recall service. They performed the software update and were supposed to install the ignition cylinder protector. Unfortunately, my car was later stolen because of this exact issue. The ignition was damaged during the theft, and I had to replace it myself just so I could drive the car. When I returned to the dealer, they refused to install the ignition cylinder protector, saying the ignition was broken. It was broken because of the theft — which happened due to Hyundai’s known defect. After the recall software update, my key fob also stopped working properly. I went back to the dealership, and they refused to fix or properly reprogram my key fob. On top of that, the service manager, john, was very rude and unprofessional. This has been the worst experience I’ve had with a vehicle and a dealership. Because of this situation. Very disappointed.

This car is becoming more of a headache than it’s worth. Turned the car on, my car started shaking and my check engine light came on. Then I got this message “a possible condition with your engine control system has been detected on a 2017 Hyundai Sonata”.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2026

I was involved in a severe motor vehicle collision in a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The airbags failed to deploy during the crash. I sustained serious injuries and was transported from the scene by ems. This vehicle has known safety recalls, and I believe the airbag non-deployment may indicate a safety defect.

The camshaft position sensor internal rubber plug is faulty and it allows oil to leak into the sensor housing. Ruining the sensor and the brushes and housing. It causes the check engine light to come on the idle races and car takes off on its own. Can’t drive it because it’s to dangerous. Once it takes off then it goes into limp mode and you can’t pull out because of no power. 40000 miles. The internet is full of owners having the same problem.

Me.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2025

E vehicle is burning approximately 2 quarts of oil every month with no external leaks. This indicates severe internal oil consumption, which is a known defect in Hyundai’s theta ii 2. 4 gdi engines. I discovered oil inside the vvt solenoid electrical connector and on other wiring, which shows oil is traveling through the engine harness. This causes hesitation, rough running, and the risk of sudden engine power loss. The vehicle feels unsafe to drive because the oil level drops quickly, and the engine could seize or stall while driving. Hyundai vehicles of this generation have a history of excessive oil consumption, piston ring failures, and engine fires, and I believe my vehicle is experiencing the same defect. This is a serious safety concern.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2025

I keep having both my low beam headlight bulbs burning out and one of them started catching on fire. The driver side caught some type of electrical issue causing it to start smoking and eventually melted the connector and lightbulb housing.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2024

The makes a weird shutter noise when accelerating and won't crank over 60. Loses power when turning or when going uphill. Sometimes has problem starting. Enging light came on twice blinking, once I changed the battery it went off and was working fine. Now it's back on again after a few weeks. Plus my oil tank still comes on and I've just received and oil change. I just bought the car in August of this year, dealership sold to me with a faulty battery.

11 Electrical System problem

Hev battery constantly states that the car needs turned off. Hyundai had to replace my engine as it just died and blew a hole in a pipe.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

While driving at a high rate of speed propulsion to the vehicle suddenly and without warning ceased, the electric and internal combustion engine were non-responsive (ice stopped; hybrid motor didn't provide propulsion), the warning light said "check hybrid system. Turn off engine" I was put at risk because I was traveling at highway speed and was given no warning before the vehicle shut down. This has occurred nine times, I've reported all to Hyundai, they have had the car in the shop three times, the issue is not fixed. No, despite odb2 error codes, the car has not shut down while a dealership is driving it. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected multiple times by Hyundai. Yes, always "check hybrid system. Turn off engine", in almost all cases the check engine light comes on after that, and in some cases additional lights such as "auto hold". This first occurred in Dec 2023, I was told the car was fixed (it wasn't) and happened again in October 2024. I haven't been able to drive my car since then.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2024

The vehicle itself shakes when accelerating and will start to fail once 60mph is hit. It will also cut out when left turns are made. . . I have met 4 people with the exact same issues who received recalls but I am not sure why my car is not included. I was almost rear ended on the highway by a semi with my pregnant wife and 4 year old son in the car because of the engine failure.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2024

While driving, car started to lose power. Warning lights started flashing to turn off vehicle to recharge battery. Car lost all power. Car was towed to dealership. Dealer started diagnostic testing, and first thing that was noted is that all oil had drained from car and that crank shaft may now be damaged. Prior to incident, no warning lights came on for service, engine or oil lamp. Dealer and internet searched confirm this has been happening to this model recently.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2024

The engine light keeps going on and off and I reported to their dealer a couple times during the warranty but when they checked the car the light got off and they asked me to keep driving it until out of warranty and they ask me to pay for fix the same problem.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2024

While driving on the highway, the car loss. The dashboard noted the blindspot detention system failed and the dash noted "hybrid system warning. Turn off engine. " the vehicle was towed to the dealership. They confirmed a knock system sensor had to be replaced. Less than a month after the repair, the same issue occurred on the highway again and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. Vehicle has been at the dealership for over 2 weeks and dealership has confirmed they haven't been able to accurately diagnosis the problem yet. Both incidents have occurred after the dealership addressed the recall campaign related to the engine.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2024

I have own my Sonata for 4 years and haven't had any problems mechanical or electrical safety. Due to my car being a Sonata and part of the settlement against them for faulty security alarm system on their cars. I was advised to make an appointment at the nearest dealer so my car alarm system car be upgraded to anti theft logic system as part of the settlement agreement. I haven't had my car stolen but was already worried about them touching my car electrical system. Boy my gut was right. I scheduled an appt to get the upgraded theft system installed and two days later my passenger air bag light came on. I have never seen this light on before so I did my research and found out that this means in a crash whoever is sitting on the passenger side air bags will not deploy. Being a father of three young ladies that drive them to school. I was very concerned so I contacted Hyundai corporation to let them know of my concerns and car situation. I spoke to a case manager ashley was really nice collecting the information and initially understood my concern being that I have had zero issues with the car. Ashley advise I make another appt to have them inspect the system and she would follow up with me. I did so and the tech said it's a faulty error for the safety air bag module that it will not work on the passenger side. I explained that I have had many cars over the years but never have I had a faulty airbag error. So I asked, have anyone else experience this error after getting the anti theft upgrade? he was quite and proceed to then disclose that my car is at 66k and the warranty ended at 60k for my car. I ask him why should I have to pay for something that was working fine up until the anti theft upgrade down by them. No response. Ashley called me and stated that they will not complete the repairs because I have not done my regular car maintenance at this location. I asked what the maintenance for a electrical issue cause after the anti theft upgrade. Hyundai has lost me.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2024

Driving on the side of the interstate, the hybrid battery indicator continuously dipped low. Minutes after continuing driving on the interstate around 50 to 60 mph, every light on the dash came on the vehicle stopped accelerating, and the warning light check hev system shut engine off started flashing. The vehicle would no longer start again after this. The dealership said that the fuse was being oversupplied, which is what caused the system to fail. This exact situation is listed in a recall for 2013 to 2015 Hyundai Sonata hybrids. After reading the recall notice. , my vehicle had this failure due to the exact reasons listed in the recall notice. Due to the damage that was caused by this fuse that could not hold enough electricity my wiring harness also has to be replaced. This could be a three to $4000 out-of-pocket expense for me that should be covered under this recall, due to its exact nature of similarities. Please assist me. I do not have the complete invoice due to the fact that the dealership is withholding that information until the repair is complete however, Hyundai motor is also aware of this issue, and I am filing this complaint for this investigation to be moved with urgency.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2024

While driving the 2017 Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid, the car will begin to stall, a rapid number of audible beeps will start, the "check hybrid system" notification will pop up on the dashboard, and the "check engine light" appears. . The car therefore cannot be driven anymore, and I am forced to pull over to the side. In order to fix the issue temporarily, I need to turn the car off and turn it back on again. Once this is completed, both the "check hybrid system" and the "check engine light" disappears and the car can be driven again. An obd scanner is unable to find exactly what is going on as the "check hybrid system" and the "check engine light" no longer appear. This has happened 4 times now within the span of 3 months. The people at risk are me (the driver), my passengers, and potentially everyone else on the road in my nearby vicinity as the problem occurs. This problem has been confirmed by the dealer in their hybrid vehicles. This vehicle has not been inspected yet but that is an ongoing process.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2024

2017 Hyundai hybrid Sonata lost power while in the middle lane of nb I-75 GA. Following notice appeared: check hybrid system. Turn off engine !hev. We were able to coast over to side of road (car was going 70mph at time of breakdown). Car towed to mcdonough Hyundai dealership. Talked to service dept. We explained our situation to him (out of town, spending money on a hotel). They performed an engine electric diag. Which stated: vehicle had multiple codes for low battery voltage. Test battery and got an instant failure. Cleared codes and test drove after new battery replacement. No codes came back. Approximately 1 hr. Later in jackson, GA we were on I-75n, middle lane & engine stalled (70mph & coasted over to side of highway). Received same code: check hybrid battery system, !hev, turn off engine. Had car towed to kennesaw, GA. Rented car to drive home & had car towed to alexandria, ky our home town. After 2 wks. Car was put on diagnostic machine. Said they test drove car multiple times. They said could not duplicate the issue. It was suggested the next time we get code on our dashboard to take a picture of it or video. Took car to kerry Hyundai, florence. Test driven car 40 miles & have gotten nothing. No codes. Told them it was imperative that your mechanics find the issue. I will not drive the car as it is now. It is unsafe as it stands now. Breaking down 2x in GA. The first time after driving it 6. 5 hrs. And the 2nd time after putting brand new battery in & breaking down exactly 1 hr. After driving. We have been without our car since 3/16/2024. Hyundai advertises a great warranty on their cars, one reason we purchased it. We wanted a safe, reliable car since we are both retired and going to travel. We are out of $1,827. 08 & afraid to drive car.

Vehicle lost power in freeway. Complete power failure. Early crashed into. Vehicle coasted to off ramp and towed away.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2023

In may, the engine completely failed as I was driving on the freeway, without cause. It had to be towed to the dealership where luckily the engine was replaced under warranty. Less than 6 months later, the hev and cel warning lights came on as I was commuting to work via highway. The car was very low powered, hard to accelerate, and immediately decelerated whenever I started to let off the gas pedal. It struggled to go at or above 60-65 mph. The freeway speed was 70 mph and it was a safety risk for the car to power down. Dublin Hyundai could not replicate the problem, simply recharged the battery and said I was good to go. Less than 1 week later, the exact same thing happened as I started on a road trip. I had to return the car home and get it towed to stockton Hyundai for diagnosis. This is car is only 6 years old, has been routinely maintained, and just hit 100k miles, for which Hyundai is denying any repair assistance even though there is a lifetime hybrid battery warranty.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2023

Engine shut off without warning problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata hybrid while driving the car on the freeway, it will jerk forward and then shortly after lose power. I pull over (luckily haven't been killed yet) on the side of the freeway. I've taken my car to a Hyundai dealership third times. All three time I was stranded on a busy California highway. I have looked into this warning over a year and no one seems to know the problem. This should be a recall and all Hyundai dealers should be made aware of what this warning is. We as Hyundai owners need answers and help.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2023

1) I purchased 2017 Hyundai Sonata hybrid new. Now for 2nd time, trunk latch won't open trunk. 1st time I paid for a new park on the trunk. Now again, trunk won't open. Dealer states they have to replace rear bumper antenna. 2) airbag light came on on the dash, and remains on when I start car. Dealer stated it is the driver seatbelt light. I never had an accident with this vehicle and air bag(s) have never inflated. Dealer stated they will have to replace driver airbag which will cost me $1,436. 35. I don't know why I have to pay for a new driver airbag when I bought the car new and never had an accident with the car.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2023

The hybrid system failure. Chrck engine light is flashing. Abs system failure. Battery failure. Car can't go over 45mph, lost a job because of the issues. I'm afraid the car is going to blow up or catch fire. I'm afraid to drive it. The acceleration is barely there. It's like the car doesn't even wanna go. It sucks through gas like no other.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2023

I first experienced hev hybrid system issue back in 2022. I took my Sonata to the dealership which they had over a month to try to fix the problem which they did for the time. Now a year later I’m back with the same issues and the dealer basically saying they can’t see my car for a month then don’t know how long it’s going to take to fix the issues if the even. Nobody can really tell me what’s wrong with my car. This the second time it’s been a safety hazard while driving on the interstate and the system malfunctions causing a hazard to me and drivers around me because the vehicle has basically cuts off rapidly slowing the vehicle down.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2023

Driving the car on the freeway, the battery light came on, and after that few other warning lights came on and I pulled over by then the car stopped and didn't turn on. It was scary since I was on the freeway. No other warning prior to that and the car was very well maintained even during the last recommended service everything was checked and no recommendation was made regarding the alternator. It was the alternator that caused the problem according to the dealer diagnosis.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2023

This issue has happened twice in one month on my Hyundai Sonata hybrid that I’ve had for less than 3 years. It is a 2017 model. While driving on the interstate, the car will stop accelerating and all warning lights will come on along with “check hybrid engine. Turn off engine”. The dealership has yet to find out the problem and cannot tell me what the issue is both times I’ve brought it in (it’s had ti be towed both times). I cannot afford to keep paying for repairs on an almost new car along with the safety concerns of driving it. I am attaching pictures of both times it happened- noting that it is the same warning each time. It looks like multiple owners are having this issue and none has yet to be resolved.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2023

Hev light comes on and the car starts slowing down & beeping. Unsure what the issue is but this started once the car had more than 100k miles on it.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2023

Problem 1: I made a right turn at a red light. As I turned my power steering light turned on and my steering wheel locked up and I lost control of the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the vehicle, I restarted it. At this point I was able to regain control of the car. A few days later the same thing happened again as I made a right turn from a parking lot into the flow of traffic. One again I stopped the engine and restarted the car, then I regained control of the car. Problem 2 (may be related): my passenger side headlight was replaced a year ago. Recently the light went out again. I took the car in to a mechanic to repair it. It was repaired so I thought. Two days later the light went out again. The mechanic believes their may be an electrical issue. Problem 3 (may be related): my driver side brake light was replaced about a year ago as well. It has now gone out again. I have had my vehicle serviced twice by a Hyundai dealership at least twice since the first incident.

35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2023

I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata that has had 3 recalls. I purchased the car in 2019 and all three recalls have been issued after 2019. Since I’ve had the car I’ve never taken it to Hyundai to get the recalls taken care of . Until recently I took my car to get the recalls fixed and they told me they had already been taken care of . The gave me the dealers contact information and I’ve never taken my vehicle to them they claim to have serviced my car at 122000 miles and I only have 94000 miles in my car. I believe they used my VIN number to summit they fixed the recalls when my vehicle was never at their dealer. I contacted Hyundai and have not received any call back . The recalls for my vehicle are very serious recalls that I need to get fixed . One of them is the malfunctioning of the trunk latch my trunk does not open or close right now. I have a 6 month old baby and I need to put her stroller in trunk and I’m unable to do so. Also my car vandalized twice they tried to steal it. I need the security update . I just don’t know who I need to contact to help me get this resolved .
