1 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2025

To whom it may concern, I have own my vehicle since Jan 2018, which was purchased from the dealership's owner w/less than 10k miles. Maintenance has been performed iaw Hyundai's recommended schedule. However, yesterday, I was informed that my vehicle needed a new engine and other replacements totaling $13,934. 89. This is outrageous. How can a well kept vehicle w/106445 miles, need such replacements? thus your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

2 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2025

While driving car stuttered check engine light and check hybrid system flashed. Check engine lights stayed on until getting home. Next day. I scanned and code p0b68 was set.

3 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2025

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata limited check engine light came on at approximately 103,000 miles of use. This happened last week. The code it was pointing to was a faulty fuel pressure sensor. Could also be combined with faulty fuel pump, but the primary code indicates the sensor. I will be taking it in to the Hyundai dealership shortly. The main reason I’m reporting this is because of my previous experience owning a 2011 Hyundai santa fe that had to have the engine replaced three times all under warranty. There ended up being a class action lawsuit because of several owners experiencing the same proglem. While this may not be the same case, I am leary of engine problems like this. I take very good care of my cars with regular maintenance, so I’m reporting this just in case others are experiencing the same problem.

4 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2025

My Hyundai consumes oil and I have to put oil in it every two weeks! also my ignition coils has had to be changed 4 times. Also check engine light just came on code saying catalytic converter or oxygen sensor changed oxygen sensor a couple months ago. I purchased it brand new and as soon as I got over 100,000 miles nothing has been going good since then please help also my paint on the top of the car is starting to peel. Will never buy a Hyundai again.

5 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2024

Literally for years I have been taking my car in to rick case Hyundai with the complaint of smelling gas even when the car was parked for long periods. Each time they said they fixed with different items. Gas cap, a part on the catalytic converter, etc. The problem never resolved but I noticed it only happened when the tank was more than half full. I got a video of gas dripping out underneath and took the car to rick case and gave them the video. My car has been there ten days because they first tried to say it was a seal on the fuel pump. This time I said that seems unlikely cause that only happens when tank is full and persists even after car is parked many hours. Now they report they found a pinhole leak in the gas tank. I will upload the video if this form allows. This does not appear to be a pinhole leak to me. I first noticed this around 2019. Unfortunately the video is mp4 and I cannot upload it.

6 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

While driving at a high rate of speed propulsion to the vehicle suddenly and without warning ceased, the electric and internal combustion engine were non-responsive (ice stopped; hybrid motor didn't provide propulsion), the warning light said "check hybrid system. Turn off engine" I was put at risk because I was traveling at highway speed and was given no warning before the vehicle shut down. This has occurred nine times, I've reported all to Hyundai, they have had the car in the shop three times, the issue is not fixed. No, despite odb2 error codes, the car has not shut down while a dealership is driving it. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected multiple times by Hyundai. Yes, always "check hybrid system. Turn off engine", in almost all cases the check engine light comes on after that, and in some cases additional lights such as "auto hold". This first occurred in Dec 2023, I was told the car was fixed (it wasn't) and happened again in October 2024. I haven't been able to drive my car since then.

7 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2024

I was driving down the freeway when my engine made a loud knocking noise, the noise got worse as the rpms increased. The check engine light began to flash and I lost power, the vehicle will not exceed 60mph and vibrates when moving down the road. I believe this issue is widely know about and should be addressed and forced into a recall. I have maintained the vehicle and should not be responsible for a manufacturing error.

8 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2024

While driving on a highway at ~60 mph, the check engine light came on (plus other indicator lights) and the car immediately dropped to ~45 mph. ~20 seconds later, while trying to pull into a school parking lot, the hybrid system fault warning came on and the car dropped to ~5-10 mph and then became extremely difficult to control. The car was towed ~80 miles to my home dealership and it was diagnosed as a partially blocked egr tube. ~1 month later, on the next longer drive I had to make (all other drives were short distances), ~70 miles into the drive, the car started making a knocking sound and then suffered the same failure under the same kind of conditions. This was diagnosed as a failed knock sensor. One week later I tried to drive it a long distance to see if the problem would happen again (but closer to home) and while traveling on an interstate highway the same issue occurred. This time it was diagnosed as oil in the wiring assembly for the just replaced knock sensor. The dealership tried to give me the car back but I demanded that they do a long test drive. It took 4 days to get them to do what I asked and then they had it break down on them in the same way. I'm not 3+ weeks after that and still don't have the car back (now they're planning to replace the egr assembly and intake manifold). Each breakdown has thrown the p1326 trouble code but Hyundai refuses to admit that the issue may be the engine itself (related to the recall). It took until the 3rd breakdown and a lot of demands to get a loaner vehicle. I don't know if this is the known engine issue, something else or new but don't feel that Hyundai is taking it seriously. If nothing else, the programming that was added to put the car in safe mode and prevent fires is too aggressive and in each case has made the car undrivable in less than 1 mile. I have gotten lucky in all cases that a safe place to stop was nearby but it is not safe to drive in many areas due to lack of safe pull off location.

9 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2024

During travel on highway (~60 mph), the vehicle suddenly lost power and the engine stopped functioning properly. The effect of the problem was that the vehicle began to 'buck' - as if the engine was having significant trouble running continuously. The engine light then illuminated solidly (not blinking). The vehicle slowed from lack of power and I was forced to move to the right lane/break-down lane through high speed highway traffic (NJ). I was able to travel /limp a few miles slowly to the next exit and get off the highway to a gas station. The engine ceased operation upon arrival to the gas station. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed the issue as engine failure. The vehicle was towed to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis by the manufacturer (denville, NJ). The diagnosis was 'engine failure'. No conditions existed prior to this event. In the recent past, the spark plugs and ignition coils were replaced. The vehicle had ~140,000 miles but it was used every day and was maintained very well during its life. I am the original owner. No insurance claim has been filed.

10 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

Hello! I bought a car in the USA, I live in another country. Errors that appear in the car are similar to these: [xxx] ?rror appears then, the cogd I give more gas and let go of the pedal. When the engine is heated at different speeds. The scanner showed these errors: p1326 ignition control module - combustion quality input signal; u0293 lost communication with hybrid powertrain control module; u1004; b2aaa. But the electricians do not know what the reason is and no one can help. So I go for one year with an error ((( please help! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

11 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

High pressure fuel pump defective. Code p016b. Dealer replaced high pressure pump, gasket, bolt. Sonata has 43265 miles and 80 months.

12 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2023

The vehicle has twice been disabled while driving due to “lost communication with hybrid module powertrain control module. ” this breakdown is a significant safety hazard as the car loses power and coasts to a stop without any warning. The second time was on a 65 mph highway. Neither time has had any warning before the malfunction lights appeared. The first time occurred on 10/7, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. Nothing was done besides clearing the trouble codes and test driving with the car, which returned at the end of October—the second time the breakdown occurred about a month later on 12/3. This second time, I removed the code myself on the roadside so as not to be in more danger, and I am currently awaiting an update from the dealership’s service department on their next steps after initially being told to just have it towed in again. Losing power without notice is incredibly concerning. I want to report this safety issue and determine my next steps to resolve it, as this has dramatically impacted my trust in the vehicle and its safety.

13 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2023

Vehicle lost power in freeway. Complete power failure. Early crashed into. Vehicle coasted to off ramp and towed away.

14 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2023

In may, the engine completely failed as I was driving on the freeway, without cause. It had to be towed to the dealership where luckily the engine was replaced under warranty. Less than 6 months later, the hev and cel warning lights came on as I was commuting to work via highway. The car was very low powered, hard to accelerate, and immediately decelerated whenever I started to let off the gas pedal. It struggled to go at or above 60-65 mph. The freeway speed was 70 mph and it was a safety risk for the car to power down. Dublin Hyundai could not replicate the problem, simply recharged the battery and said I was good to go. Less than 1 week later, the exact same thing happened as I started on a road trip. I had to return the car home and get it towed to stockton Hyundai for diagnosis. This is car is only 6 years old, has been routinely maintained, and just hit 100k miles, for which Hyundai is denying any repair assistance even though there is a lifetime hybrid battery warranty.

19 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2023

Car is burning an excessive amount of oil. After getting the oil changed I needed to add additional oil. Car is driving sluggish and won't pick up speed. In 2023 the car bucked, check engine light came on and the car failed to drive over 60mph. I took to firestone to be repaired and they fixed the knock sensor. After a few weeks, the car bucked, check engine light came on and car would not drive over 60, they also informed me the car used too much oil since I drove it last, there was a service bulletin for the oil consumption and to take to Hyundai. Took to dealer for repair, they said engine consumption is fine. After a few days cars started becoming sluggish not picking up speed. I checked the oil - it was empty.

20 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2023

Car completely lost all power train systems while in motion after repair at dealership for hsg. Car was able to be restarted after shifting into park after complete stop. All instructions in user manual for restarting vehicle while in motion were followed but not successful. The vehicle died again pulling into dealership and the tech began diagnosis.

21 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2023

My Hyundai Sonata hybrid has always experienced issues with a loss of power as well as warnings illuminating on the dashboard which also would result in a check engine light and occasionally a complete shutdown of the car. When this issue was experienced a simple restart of the car would make it run normal again-even the trouble codes would clear out of the system after the 3rd reset (also completely wiping the code history)I was lucky and the car began to “limp” and throw the check hybrid system warning within 5 minutes of a local dealership. They found that the hsg “hybrid starter generator” was faulty via a voltage test. They explained that the hsg would cause the complete shutdown and poor performance of my vehicle due to incorrect voltage. This issue existed for many years and the dealership was unable to identify the source of the issue. This is extremely dangerous and seems to be a common occurrence. I complained about this issue directly to the dealer’s maintenance managers as well as escalated the issue to Hyundai corp they also were unable to determine the part was faulty over many years and even told me to just “reset and keep driving”. Please investigate this issue it can be found all over the internet with a simple google search. I have even met a gentleman in the dealership with the same year Hyundai Sonata hybrid limited and he also was experiencing the same issue-they were unable to identify or replicate the issue when the car was left with the dealer.

22 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2022

Complete loss of power. Car shut down at freeway speeds. Dealership runs codes and they cannot find out what specifically is causing issue. Issue cannot be replicated as it only happens a few times a year and has existed since shortly after purchase of the car brand new. There is articles all over the internet people having similar experiences. This car is not safe. Hyundai does not communicate hybrid system codes through their telematics system so there is no paper trail. The car also clears the codes out after 3 reboots following the check hybrid system codes. Dealer has reported car shut down due to voltage issues-not able to determine the reason since after reboot the car drives normally.

23 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2022

The check engine light started flashing check hybrid system turn off engine massage appeared the gas pedal doesnt work and the car jumps the problem happened 4 times so far with me the same problem happened about 5 times with my uncle that drives 2016 Sonata hybrid.

24 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2022

The car lost all acceleration and my check hybrid system light came on. The car would not handle safely to drive. After 3 resets the car finally accelerated as normal. The codes clear themselves before the dealer can check them to give a specific issue. It is not giving the diagnosis for the hybrid issue in the diagnostic log.

25 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2022

This is my second report and no one helped me. I have a safety issue and I am driving an unsafe car hyundia refuses to help me.

26 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2022

Engine intermittingly stalls while driving. Unsafe/dangerous!.

27 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2022

It's knock sensor issue code was showing since 85000 mileage, dealer just got rid of the code and said can drive safely. Then again at 101000 mileage knock sensor code and Hyundai dealer said software is updated can drive safely. Also it's engine oil burning faster that we keep on topup oil all time. Then at after 108000 mileage my car started overheating, & it's engine seized. Now Hyundai don't want to fix such problems. I don't know maybe it get fixed, then catches fire on highway can cause death.

28 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2022

I'm reporting the growing concern of my engine having rod knock or seizing . It has been burning excessive oil since I bought it at 80k miles. I have reached out to Hyundai and they have denied me any help as the vehicle is past their 10y/100k mile warranty. Although my vehicle has extended warranty up to 150k miles for engine seize or rod bearing failure through them. There's no warning lamp but the piston slap noise is getting louder, I'm scared this problem might leave my family and I stranded in the middle of the night. Also scared that it can catch on fire due to almost running with no oil. I have to do my oil change every 1200 miles, instead of 3000. Corporate Hyundai has denied any type of assistance, I went to a dealer to get it checked out and they insist without proof of oil changes there's nothing they can do, I do them myself on all my cars and I'm very on top of my maintenance. I have scheduled an appointment 02/07/2024 to try and diagnose the growing issues with the engine itself.

29 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2022

I work from home so I don't travel that much. A few months ago, my car was jerking when trying to accelerate. The engine light was flashing on and off. I took it on to the dealership and was told it was a computer update causing the problem. After leaving, the car was doing better, but not completely right as it was prior to the issue. I returned back to the dealership later to explain what else was going on. The car still jenks on acceleration, but not as forceful. I was then told it is possibly my intake manifold and spark plugs. I plan to take my car back for the spark plugs, but I'm curious about the intake manifold. Either way, this is an issue for when I'm trying to accelerate after a stop and I have a long delay. It also does this on an incline. My car doesn't want to climb on an incline.

30 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2022

Car was bought in March of 2022 and has had major oil problems since . The oil needs to be changed / filled every 2 weeks . Was taken to a proper mechanic shop where it was stated the car is consuming large amounts of oil and it’s burning leaving the oil level bone dry . Mechanic stated the oil most likely was leaving through the tail pipe / exhaust on a blue kinda of smoke .

31 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2022

The Hyundai was started, feint knocking was heard. Progressed louder as vehicle accelerated, engine then stalled, check engine light and oil pressure light turned on and traction control disengaged as the vehicle erupted into a rolling blaze.

32 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2022

April 28, 2022 the engine. It is repaced and still at antwerpen hyundi in baltimore MD. At great risk because the car would lose all forward power and reduce speed from60 mile per hour on a beltway where the traffic moves very fast and I would quickly go down to 20 miles per hour. The problem was diagnosed by 2 certified mechanics before taken to antwerpen where the 3rd diagnosis was proven a need to replace the engine. I am not sure if it was inspected by the manufacturer but the service dept. At antwerpen were in touch with the manufacturer because they approved replacing the engine. There were no-(none) check engine lights but it did say change the oil. I did change the oil even though it was only 1200 miles since the oil had been changed. The power failure occured two times prior to the final time and I took it to jenkins Hyundai in leesburg florida (where I bought the car) and they continued to report no problems. The problem 1st appeared within the first 30 days of the purchase on may 22, 2021. Upon receiving the car back after engine replacement the car was blowing black smoke (lots of it) I took it back to antwerpen and they found the turbo was completely destroyed (because the manufacturer had them -power clean?-the turbo. The manufacturer agreed to pay to repace the turbo. However upon closer inspection the cateletic convertor was ruined because of all the oil thrown . They agreed to pay for the converter but I had to pay for the labor (?) it took 2 weeks (while I had to pay for my transportation) to complete. I was to pick up the car on the 27th of April,2022 and I did. It is still blowing lots of black smoke. Antwerpen said drive it for a few weeks and the smoking will stop. I drove 13 miles and the car start trembling- all over shaking. No flat tire. The engine is rumbling and shaking the car. Antwerpen said don't bring it in. Let me do some looking around and I (deana parks) will call you by 2 p. M. Today (5/28/22 I am afraid of I.

33 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2021

Problem began Dec. 2021. Has occurred on 16 occasions since then. Warning light "check hybrid system; turn off engine" comes on while driving. The car then shuts off the engine and there is a 100% loss of motive power. Sometimes is associated with very rough braking with the car "knocking'. " on 3 occasions there has been partial/near complete loss of braking power. All incidents have occurred while under power, so far all while under 45 mph. No accidents yet. Two near collisions from the rear. Hyundai was notified of the problem Dec. 2021/Jan. 2022. After a month of testing they stated the car needed a new plug-in hybrid battery. One was not available and due to "supply chain issues" is still not available 15 months later. Dealership provided a loaner vehicle Jan to sept. 2022. They requested their car back and Hyundai initially agreed to cover the cost of a rental car. I rented a car for 6 weeks in sept. -oct. 2022 at which point a new case manager informed me that Hyundai would not pay for a rental vehicle any longer (note: they did reimburse me the cost of those 6 weeks rental). Hyundai is well aware of the safety issues involved in driving this vehicle. However, they have chosen to ignore them. Their attorney, in a letter to the ohio attorney general's office, blamed the lack of a plug in hybrid battery on supply chain issues (letter was Nov. 2022, at which time the battery was supposed to be available March 2023) and only stated that my vehicle was "drivable. " another warning message "high system temperature; switching to hybrid mode" has been occurring for a couple of years periodically. Since October 2022, the malfunction indicator lamp is always on and 99% of the time the "check hybrid system!" warning light also comes on after about a minute after starting the vehicle. On 3 other occasions the vehicle has entered into "limp home mode" instead of complete shutdown.

34 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2021

On August 31st 2021, while driving my 2017 Hyundai Sonata phev on interstate 95 the check engine and hybrid system warning lights came on and the car simultaneously lost power for 3-4 seconds, which caused a decrease in speed from 65 to approximately 50 mph. There was a tractor trailer behind me but thankfully it braked to avoid striking my car. The car regained partial power and I was able to drive it home. I took the car to the dealership to have it repaired. The dealer diagnosed a faulty battery management system, and replaced this component after 17 days. On September 25, while driving on a street the car once again lost power for 3-4 seconds, with the check engine and hybrid system lights simultaneously illuminated. There was a recall on my vehicle several years ago to prevent this dangerous problem. I had the car repaired at that time but clearly the problem was not fixed as my car has subsequently lost power on two separate occasions, in a manner that could have easily caused a crash.

35 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2021

Recall on my 2017 Hyundai Sonata was repaired 9/13/2019, purchased the vehicle with financing on 7/16/2021. On 8/18/2021, had vehicle towed back to the dealership and explained the issue. Engine knocking, tire pressure and engine lights on, frequent stalling, turning off, smell of gas and something burning, loss of power to the engine, car could not accelerate to 60 mph. The dealership had my car till 9/20/2021, power train warranty was denied and voided, no loaner car was given, was not offered any reimbursement for car rental by dealership and Hyundai corporate. Although car is included in theta class action lawsuit. I was correct about issue with engine, but the dealership replaced engine with used parts. No later than five days after having my car back, the engine and tire pressure lights came back on, car is tugging, and the engine noise is louder. I don’t believe that they replaced the engine with oem parts.
