While traveling 40 mph, car flashes a warning, "check hybrid system", and then the car shuts off. No power steering and brakes are difficult. The warning is only 3-5 seconds before everything shuts down. This is definitely a hazard to myself and others. If in traffic at higher speeds, there would certainly be an accident with devastating results.

My vehicle has 65000 miles and the steering would freeze up while driving on a local street and almost had a collission. First time I noticed the problem was when my vehicle had 55000 milea and it was under warranty. They replaced a part at that time and now just 2 months later I have the same problem but the dealership refuse to fix the problem. It is a safety issue and it started while under warranty. Can you please help me with this matter.
Taking my car to the dealership on Dec. 1 to get seatbelt recalls addressed and requested that they check my steering wheel issue. The steering clanks and rattles when turning and when going over rough roads it is terribly noisy. Driving over 60 causes the steering wheel to rattle and vibrate too. It is just a scary sound and feeling to be driving and thinking your steering wheel might fly off and you'll go heading into the woods! they said they have a lot of complaints about this same issue and I am not alone. They deal with this Hyundai issue daily. Hoping this will be just an easy fix of the gasket or whatever has eroded and not become something greater. I am glad I can schedule an appointment to address this concern.
First incident, Sunday, September 9, 2018. While driving, car suddenly flashed warning lights, with message pertaining to the battery. Car decelerated extremely rapidly and became harder to steer. Pulled car over out of street as it lost power. It stopped. Lights remained on. Turned car off and then turned it back on. It cranked up and could be driven as if the incident never happened. There were no warning lights or warning message when the car was restarted. Second incident, Monday, September 10, 2018. While driving the car to the dealership for diagnosis of the problem, the car suddenly lost power again, the warning lights flashed again, and again it became hard to steer. This time driver was not able to pull the car over; it stopped in the street. Driver turned the car off, then turned it back on and drove to the nearest service station. A tow truck was called and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership stated the vehicle did not register any code that they could detect. They had a technician drive it from work to home each day and the vehicle never gave any problem. They could not find any problem at all with the vehicle that required service or repair. Vehicle was picked up on Saturday, September 16, 2018. The dealership waived the diagnostic fee since they were not able to diagnosis a problem. The vehicle has been traded-in. The issue was reported to Hyundai motor corporation.
I have had to change my break lights 8 times since January. Both my rear left and right brake lamps keep burning out constantly, even though I've replaced the bulbs many times. I have now received 2 warnings about it. I have taken my car into Hyundai and after a lot of frustration they do a temporary fix then it happens again. This is huge safety issue, as brake lights are required by law, and if they aren't working properly, they pose a huge risk to driver and those around. Other sonatas are on recall for this but I am being told my VIN does not qualify. In additions I am having issues with my steering coupler. I have been dealing with this since 96k miles on the car and again my VIN is not covered and they want 500 to fix a $4. 00 part.
There is clunking and play in the steering at low speeds, in park or stopped. It appears to be there when the steering wheel is moved within 5 - 10 degrees of center. Also, there is a loud clunking/clanking sound when going over rough pavement, speed bumps, etc.
The steering wheel makes a loud clanking sound, vibrates, and delays in reacting to turns.
Steering wheel rattles and clunks when driving and turning.
Steering wheel make clicking, thumping sound and feels wobbly when steering. Independent garage found steering coupling assembly at fault during a oil change and replaced the parts on 11/19/26. Replace at a cost of over $500. Unit was replace and the symptoms are back again. This looks like a design issue.
The wheel shakes when you turn it or hit any bumps kind of like a clicking sound.
Steering wheel coupler going bad per dealer. Had noticed the steering wheel clunking while turning. Per dealer no campaign and over $400 to replace. The vehicle has 84,000 miles.
Steering is very "loose" and makes alarming clunking sounds on turns or at speeds above 60mph.
Metal shavings in engine oil pan causing engine failure, knocking, lose of power while driving, manufacturing defect on small block engine but not on the small block hybrid. . . We were told by the dealer but the hybrid still has the same defect as the none hybrid same exact issues metal shaving in oil pan defects from manufacturer. The none hybrid was recalled but a recall was never issued for the hybrid stated by employees at global auto mall in new jersey.
Hybrid system warning! safely stop and do not drive. 1st occurrence miles - 42,143. 2nd occurrence miles - 42,276 this is the second time in a week I'm taking the car into the dealer for the same hybrid malfunction. The car gave me the hybrid warning, then while trying to pull the car over safely, the car lost all power and stalled. This occurred on a busy city street. Steering is also an issue, the car does not track strait. The car's steering constantly has to be corrected to track strait.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that when the vehicle was shifted into park, the eps (electric power steering) warning light illuminated. In addition, the vehicle failed to power off and the ¿shift gear into park¿ warning message illuminated when the vehicle was already in the park position. The contact also stated that when the vehicle was powered off, it took numerous attempts to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacture was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
The electronic power steering with steer assist option on this vehicle makes it very difficult to hold a straight line while driving. I constantly have to correct the steering to keep the vehicle in control on a straight line. This has been an ongoing problem since I purchased the vehicle. I brought it to three different Hyundai dealerships , finally the last dealership actually tried to rectify the problem twice adjusting the electronic power steering control switch. This switch has four driving modes from comfort to sport. The last visit the technician placed it in the sport mode for better steering response with less play in the steering, this did help somewhat but the car still drifts to the left while driving. Two four wheel alignments were performed but still could not solve the drifting problem. This drifting is extremely dangerous while driving on the highway, the vehicle will go into another lane if I do not constantly correct the steering. In over 30 years of driving experience with multiple vehicles I never had such a problem. I sent Hyundai an email about this and it led to nowhere but call a third party moderator. That is an extremely disappointing response and I'm totally disgusted about this. I searched online if other owners had the same problem and I'll tell you there are many owners with the same problem it's a shame Hyundai is ignoring such a safety issue. I hope this complaint will lead to a resolution before a serious injury and/or fatality occurs. Please examine this issue.
We took the vehicle to the dealership for service and when it was returned to us, we were notified that the steering coupler was defective and it would be $250 +taxes and fees to replace. There is a TSB and after investigation of same on the internet there have been several occurrences of failure of this part and it is a safety related part and failure could result in injury or death. I feel that a recall of this part should be considered.
This vehicle has electric power steering. When driving on the highway, it is impossible to keep the car tracking straight. It is not a tire issue, nor is it a crown in the road issue. The vehicle must continuously be corrected to keep in a straight line. Windy conditions cause the vehicle to radically respond to adjustments, so does a large truck in front of my vehicle. Hyundai states there is nothing wrong with my vehicle. If you go online, there are thousands of Hyundai customers with the same electric steering issues mimicking my issues to a tee, and they say Hyundai is "stonewalling" them, telling them there is nothing wrong, there is learning curve driving an electric power steering vehicle. How can thousands of Hyundai customers have the same problem? why isn't your organization looking into to this? there was a recall of the electric power steering on Hyundai vehicles in 2007. Doesn't that show you that they had a problem, and maybe they only put a bandaid on an open wound? finally, I was driving to work on route 295 south in NJ 3 weeks ago. A NJ state trooper followed behind me for 2 miles then pulled me over. I asked "what was the problem"? the officer said while following you there wasn't any time you were able to stay in your lane. I told about my issue with electric power steering and showed him the e-mails to Hyundai. He made me get out of my car, and gave me a sobriety test. I passed of course. Then he asked if he could inspect the inside of my vehicle. I couldn't believe it! he was looking for alcohol or drugs. Of course there was none, and he gave me a warning. Hyundai to this day refuses to acknowledge any problem with there electric power steering. I don't want to endanger myself or anybody else with this dangerous vehicle. Please look into my complaint, and the thousand of others who are also dealing with this issue.

While driving north on I-95 to a family fourth of July party this past summer I started to have a problem with my sonata's steering system. I felt the steering wheel grab and hold itself in place for an instant. In that instant I sensed that I had to exert extra strength to the steering wheel to force it to release itself from the surprising and frightening grab. Thankfully, the extra exertion on my part released the the grab right away but another grab occurred within a few seconds. I had to drive the rest of the way to virginia beach with this feeling of grab and release, grab and release, grab and release occurring every few seconds. The return trip back home on I-95 to south carolina a few days later was just as bad. This steering problem just about drove me to distraction. I felt lucky to get back home alive and well. Once at home I realized that the sonata's steering system does not grab at lower speeds. It doesn't grab if you keep the speed below forty-five miles per hour, but whenever I get the speed up to fifty miles per hour or higher it starts to grab. The Hyundai dealership where I purchased the car took it out for a test drive but they didn't take it out on a highway so they didn't get the car's speed up high enough and, therefore, reported that they didn't feel any grabbing. So I was left with a fairly new sonata that is still under warranty nbut not able to drive it over fifty miles per hour. I recently took the sonata to our regular garage and paid to have the wheels rotated and also paid for an alignment, but there was no improvement. I must get this steering problem fixed before the end of the year because we are driving to florida in early January and once again will be driving on I-95.
I was traveling home returning from a doctors visit and pulled into a restaurant. When backing out of the parking lot I heard a scrape or drag under the right front wheel. I straightened the wheels and left the parking lot. I traveled a short distance and heard the noise again. I stopped and looked at the right front wheel and under the fender. I found that a piece of the plastic undercover under the wheel well had come loose and was dragging and pulled loose. I looked again and the complete underside plastic material of the fender well was loose and the fender had separated from the bumper. I aligned the pieces up and drove to the Hyundai dealer in mcdonough, georgia. The service department told me the vehicle had been in an accident. They said Hyundai would not cover this under their warranty. I questioned this because my wife and I drive the vehicle and it had not been in an accident. Their one (1) mechanic told the service manager that it had to go to the body shop as he could not repair it. The service manager also said the car had been hit in the right front. I questioned this and he said even a shopping cart in a parking lot could hit the fender and cause the damage. The vehicle was taken to the body shop and the supervisor said the vehicle was not in an accident. The fender and bumper had no scratches or any outward signs of where it had been hit. He said the vehicle fender and bumper clips that hold the fender to the bumper together had separated and broke and let the plastic piece under the wheel drop. He said the damage could not be repaired because the clips were broken and the bumper would have to be replaced.
Vehicle drifts from one side to the other. Will not drive straight, it pulls to the right or left needing constant adjustment of the steering wheel. Two attempts have been made to correct the problem by the dealer with no definitive results. This makes for tiresome and hazardous driving.
