4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/13/2019

While driving the car will randomly rev very high it started about 3 weeka ago while driving at around an average of 45mph in city. It was initially just revving 3-4 times until I hit the break and it was isolated to one incident per drive. But last night after driving on I-25 at highway speed I turned to a slower busy street more stop and go traffic and the car started revving again only this time it did not stop after one incident. As soon as I hit the accelerator it went into a revving fit. And didnt stop I couldn't even drive it because I could not get it to accelerate. I tried turning off blue drive and tried shifting down to 1st gear so I could at least make it at 10-15mph but it revved up even in manual gear. I had to park it for the night in a pretty sketchy neighborhood and call an uber. The system didn't populate any codes and no service lights came on. Then, this morning when I went back to get the car to a mechanic and it was accelerating fine though it was sluggish. I managed to make it 2. 5 miles to a mechanic without incident but still no service engine light.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/27/2018

While trying to accelerate at freeway speeds (50-60mph), the "eco guage" revs up but the car will not accelerate - slows down in the middle of traffic. The oil pressure warning lamp flickers on and off as well. After the car is stopped and turned off, the car functions normally. Mechanics are unable to retrieve any codes from the system. The car has intermittantly dropped into this mode at least 10 times since we first experienced the problem in July 2018. The problem occurs at freeway speeds causing the car to rapidly decelerate in fast moving traffic with no advance warnings. This situation requires immediate evasive action to remove the car from high speed traffic lanes so it can be shut down and towed to the Hyundai dealer. My wife and I consider this a life-threatening situation as it has occurred in places such as the bay bridge (with no shoulder) and a lengthy underwater tunnel (again with no shoulder). We have taken it to the Hyundai dealer service shop four times. They have replicated the problem and have tried various repairs - replace transmission oil pump, replace inhibitor switch, install new auxilliary battery, and - finally - replacing the transmission. Even after the transmission replacement, the car shut down while the mechanic was test driving it and provided a code to replace the crankshaft position sensor. The mechanics still are not certain they have fixed the problem. It appears as if Hyundai is aware of the problem as their technical support staff have a protocol for repairing the car. Given the intermittant nature of the problem, the fact that it occurs at high speeds, and the potential danger of having your car rapidly decelerate on busy freeways, I think this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by Hyundai. Attached is the original service record that describes the problem (date 8/6/18). The most recent occurrence was 11/27/18.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/24/2018

Takata recall, my car was totaled out in a car accident on July 24, 2018. As the result of the person in front of me was driving and had to come to a complete stop multiple times attempting to find the turn she was looking for. It was a unit in between us allowing me to make a complete stop without hitting her. In the process of me hitting breaks my engine reved really high causing my car to speed up instead of stop. The back tired were even spinning with my foot on the breaks. As a result my car slammed into her rear end without me having any control period. There was no damage to her vehicle other than a scratch from the impact of my car, however my car was totaled completely out. I'm faulted for the accident bc I'm suppose to have control over my own car. In this case I did not. I was told by my insurance company to investigate if there was a recall on my car dealing with these issues causing my accident, and sure enough there is 2 recalls I was never informed about. The only one I knew about was the seatbelt and I took it to the dealship for that and it still didn't fix the problem. I need to know since these recalls play a part in my accident how I can be compensated. It clearly was not my fault that the car had manufacture issues I knew nothing about. It's had this issue for some time now but I was told it's bc it's a hybrid me knowing it was something not safe about it. I was in motion on a city street getting ready to get in the left lane once the lady turned to take my son to school. She almost missed her turn and hit her brakes. My car did not respond to me hitting my brakes it just kept going. #162.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/26/2017

It has overheat problem that Hyundai service couldn't fix. It broke down 6 times and was 3 times in the shop. 4/2/17, I was on fastest lane on 101 freeway in downtown la. Suddenly the car alarm beeps. Dash board displayed "hybrid system warning, safely stop and do not drive". The gas pedal was hard to press, (guess it goes into protection mode. ) fortunately it was in rush hour traffic that no car ram into me from behind. I forced the car switched lanes and exit freeway. After I parked, the car frozed. I can't turn on the emergency signal. Can't switch the gear to park, can't turn off the engine. . . I exit the car and wave cars behind me move ahead, then I got back the car and was able to turn off the engine. After it was off for 30 seconds, I can turn the engine back on and the car functions like normal. It was under 18000 miles. The service department says the coolant leak and replaced it. 5/15/17, while driving on freeway, I felt the car was into protection mode, hard to press the accelerator. But the alarm didn't sound off. I sent it in and the service couldn't duplicate the problem so they reset the computer of the car. 6/5/17 the car was parked in hot sun in ps for 30 minutes while me and my realtor go to check a house. I started the car following my realtor. I turned on the ac and the alarm goes off, same warning sign displayed and the car just froze. Hyundai sent a tow truck an hour later. After in the shop overnight, the service dept says they fixed it. 6/14. In ps again. The car was parked in hot sun. I got in and turn on the engine. Alarms goes off same warning sign. 6/26, with a friend on way to julian, the car engine thrust the car forward, a small icon lit up. I slowed down and parked , the alarm goes off, same warning words on dashboard. After let the car cool off, I was able to drive but 20 minutes later it happened again.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/13/2017

Was driving vehicle and "check charging system" message displayed on the console. The vehicle lost power, I could not accelerate so I had to manevour to the far right of the freeway to come to a stop. Turned off the vehicle then re started. Check engine light remained on.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/03/2017

Charging system malfunctioned, sensors melted in valve trane, radiator elbow and fill neck blew off, complete engine failure and battery failure. I have had a problem with the "check brake" light and an alarm going off. However, when I stopped driving and had it towed to the dealership they could find nothing. Prior to this incident, I took a photo of my dash, I had 76,499 miles and the coolant meter did not read hot. I had had the coolant system flushed at 65,000 miles, and I had all oil and fluids checked again after this incident. The breakdown: three hours into a roadtrip, the a/c began blowing warm, simultaneously - the "the check brake" light and alarm came on, and the "check charging system" light came on. I lost power to accelerate (or brake well) and immediately pulled over and took a photo of my dash warnings (76919 miles). The heat sensor was in the "cool" half, the battery gage showed no power. Battery so low key would not start car. I had the car towed. "tech found that elbow and radiator have holes in them vehicle overheated causing engine to blow. " tiffany richardson said "tech believe vehicle was driven with low coolant level causing vehicle to run hot melting sensors in the valve train and the pipes to fail. " the tech is wrong, the coolant system was inspected and flushed at 65,000 miles, and was not due for another inspection. I had had coolant levels checked less than 1000 miles ago, and the heating sensor on dash did not read hot, at the point of breakdown or after a road trip 500 miles ago. Others had the problem at 3000 miles! it's the hpcu. The power for both electric motors is routed through hpcu. The inverters allow the a/c motors to be driven by d/c batteries. This caused the "check charging system" error. This is $15,000. 00 and I owe $4000 on the car - 100,000 warranty has denied it & I am original owner.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/17/2017

About an hour into driving home on the freeway, my car alert system went off and the car automatically began to decelerate and the dashboard display showed instructions to check hybrid charging system and to check surroundings and to pull over when safe and to not drive vehicle. The check engine light, the needs maintenance light and the check oil light all came on. After about 15 secs my vehicle lost all power but did not turn off; the steering wheel became locked. I placed the car into park and restarted it and the warning alert alarm ceased, but now the check engine light stayed on. The steering wheel was movable again and I was able to pull to the shoulder where a California highway patrol officer pulled up and asked me if I was having trouble. After our conversation, I was able to continue the additional 40 mile drive home as the local Hyundai dealerships were closed until the next day, Saturday March 18. I was able to drop my car off in the afternoon but due to their booked schedule, it could not be looked at until Monday March 20th and stayed over night. The technician called me that day and stated that the car test ran on it came back passing and no issues found and that they drove it about 20 miles and no issues and I was able to pick up my car on Tuesday. However, the same system issue happened 3 more times before I was able to take it back into the dealerahip later that week and it has been there as of 4/21/2017. I received a call today that a replacement hybrid battery was installed and after more tests I may get my car back.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. When driving the vehicle up or down an hill, it failed to maintain the desired speed. Instead, the vehicle's speed would increase or decrease 5-6 mph from the desired speed. The contact also stated that the vehicle's resume feature failed to return the vehicle back to the desired speed when driving. The feature set the vehicle at the automatic set speed of 40 mph. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was discovered that the speed control only worked on high incline type of road conditions. In addition, the resume feature failed. The vehicle's computer system was reset; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and believed it may be part of the design feature. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.

This vehicle Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has all the issues that the regular Hyundai sonata recalls have engine was rebuilt due to metal shavings in the oil pan, also this hybrid accelerates at times when it doesnt run on battery (engine kicks in) too many issues with this Hyundai Sonata Hybrid!!! in motion on highway/ city streets.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/11/2015

I bought this 2013 hybrid new about 6 months ago. There are 2 main issues I have had with the car. First: the problem is the car sometimes goes about 3 mph for approximately 25 feet before lurching with great acceleration. I drove with the 'energy flow' mode on the display to see what was showing when this problem was occurring. According to the owner's manual the display was showing the "engine generation/motor drive" (to decelerate the vehicle, engine braking is used while the regenerative braking is applied and also charges the hybrid battery. [engine>battery>wheel]). This sounds like a deceleration mode, but should this be happening when my foot is pressing the gas pedal? it has occurred when I have slowed to make a left turn and also when accelerating from a dead stop. It happens when I am applying steady pressure or pumping the pedal. This can be a huge potential problem/accident waiting to happen if I am attempting to turn or cross a road with oncoming traffic because I may not be moving fast enough to cross before the traffic gets to me. Even if they were over a hundred feet away when I started the turn/to cross the intersection. Second: as has been previously mentioned by others, there is a 'thump' felt at times while braking. It is felt in the driver's seat and through the brake pedal and also felt by the passenger's through their seats. The best way to describe it would be the feeling of being rear-ended and pushed forward several inches. As driver, my head is usually an inch or two away from the head rest and when this happens my head hits the headrest or the headrest hits my head. The brake pedal itself is not affected, as there is no feeling of losing the brake/not slowing down. It's just a 'thump' felt.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/29/2014

This problem has been getting progressively worse during the last 6 months. While driving or stopped at a light, the vehicle has sudden unexplained acceleration. The acceleration happens with or without the foot on the gas. When in drive, the driver can remove his foot from the gas and the vehicle continues to accelerate and pick up speed. The condition is extremely hazardous and warrants further investigation.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/25/2014

Day after purchase, beeps and notification to pull over and check charging system. Had car towed one week later car was returned to us. Dealer installed a new battery. Running fine except brakes make a noise when depressed quickly. March 28th, 11 months later coming home from florida, driving on interstate 95 late at night in stop & go traffic, beeps and notification to pull over and check charging system. Pulled car over shut off. Restarted car and continued driving. Check engine light stayed on for 24 hrs. Returned to dealer that week could find nothing wrong with charging system. And could not duplicate braking sound at dealership, but still making noise sporatically. May 15th, late on a Saturday night, stopped to make left hand turn, I started to accelerate, half way into the turn, car would not accelerate, bells and notification to check charging system. With traffic coming towards me, I had to shut down engine and restart again. If oncoming traffic was slightly faster I would have been hit. Check engine light stayed on overnight but went off the next day. Returning to dealer this week. Don't expect any positive results as last time they said they cannot find anything wrong. I loved my car, however driving it now makes me very nervous!.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/19/2013

When stopping at a red light or a stop sign or going up a slight driveway there is a loss of power when you apply the gas for a few seconds, and then the car surges. We were stopped behind a car and when we went to drive around them the car would only go approx 1 mph with the gas pedal flat on the floor, then the car surges. Then at other times there are no problems. The dealership is trying to tell me we are driving with one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas. I do not use my left foot for the brake. I tried taking the car out of blue mode but still had the problem.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/08/2012

When accelerating from a stop, the vehicle takes excessively long time to go from 0-25 mph, so much so , that when merging into traffic it has unpredictable acceleration. At various times I would step on the gas pedal and sometimes it would have a 3-5 second delay before going forward. When it finally accelerates sometimes it has a popping sound and often the car lurches. I have brought it in 3 times for Hyundai to find the problem but each and every time they have said they were not able to find anything wrong with the car.
