Infiniti QX4 owners have reported 24 problems related to body (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Infiniti QX4 based on all problems reported for the QX4.
The vehicle is completely rusting underneath and running boards. I was told by Infiniti customer affairs that the recalls had closed for rusted out struts. This impacts driving and can become a safety concern if the struts completely rust away. I'm concerned for my safety or the safety of my family if this failure occurs. The dealerships will not honor a recall that is no longer valid or closed. This is a potential life safety issue.

Extensive rust and decay is found on the passenger side frame where the lower control arm connects. This is just below the strut housing and is visible through the front wheel well. I have attached both passenger and driver side photos as the defect only appears on the passenger side.

Tl the contact owns a 2002 Infiniti Qx4. After the contact purchased the vehicle from an independent mechanic, he noticed rust forming on the passenger side frame rail below the passenger side control arm. The contact took the vehicle to another independent mechanic who informed him that they could reinforce the frame well; however, a fuel line ran through the rusted area, which could cause more damage to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 139,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2000 Infiniti Qx4. The contact stated that the vehicle's frame was completely rusted and the fuel tank did not indicate when it was at full capacity. As a result, fuel would overflow. The rust failure was remedied in 2012. The vehicle was taken to Infiniti of northern kentucky (1945 dixie hwy, fort wright, ky 41011) for other repairs; however, it was not diagnosed for the fuel failure. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.
The SUV has been recalled for unusual rusting of the entire underside, the NHTSA said the struts may rust and break away from the body, that is happening. We called the Nissan dealer in winchester virginia, they lied and said there is no such recall.
Bought a used car from a used car dealer with 1 previous owner. In 2011 a recall was supposedly done by indicating "inspected!" why wasn't the parts replaced?.

This concern is involving the r1109 recall issued by Infiniti. The recall was performed six years ago, however rust, and holes in the metal are now visible. I was told that because the recall was already performed, there was nothing they could do to assist me. This vehicle will soon be unsafe to drive.
The contact owns a 1998 Infiniti Qx4. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the steering wheel fractured. As a result, the contact was unable to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering wheel fractured due to corrosion and that the steering column and spring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 173,757.

Based on my my mechanics advise I had vehicle inspected by Infiniti dealer and learned that frame of the vehicle rusted thru mounting point of rf lower control arm and unsafe to operate. Based on my mechanics advise, I contacted Infiniti. I explained them that this vehicle only has 136,900 miles and should not have rusted like this. I truly believe that Infiniti messed up the metallurgy or used cheap steel to manufacture this car. Infiniti recited the several recalls like strut tower and filler tube rust and said there is nothing they can do. I like these vehicles to be looked at again for the severe rust issues that makes these vehicles unsafe and can cause accidents.
My frame an body on my car rusting very badly. The frame an wheel well on the driver side of car is very badly rusted. I went for service because of a rocking back an forth they told me too get help right a way because my frame was about to break due to rust $1100. Cost is there a recall. I cant afford this cost. I really need my car its my life line. Please help me get my car repaired.
When driving the vehicle above 45 mph, the vehicle started shaking and swaying making it very difficult to keep the vehicle on the road. Took the vehicle to an Infiniti dealer who stated in their inspection report, "found passenger side frame rail mount (cradle to frame) broken and cracked". Verbally the dealer said that the car's frame "simply rusted apart. ".
As my daughter attempted to install a baby seat in the rear of the SUV the running boards crackled and a substantial amount of rust/metal fell from under the vehicle. A highly dangerous situation for a part that was designed by Infiniti (a luxury car company) to retain the weight of passengers entering or exiting a vehicle safely. It appears that the parts are rusting considerably which is apparent by a fairly recent recall based on rusting parts acknowledged by Infiniti.
The left front wheel well has rusted so that now the wheel well is starting to rest on the driveshaft.
Running boards are complety rusted, they will either fall off while driving and could cause an accident or an unsuspecting person could be relying on them to enter the SUV and hurt them selfs. The SUV was well taken care of, 1 owner, and the frame rails and chassis are considerably rust free. How come these are in such bad condition? why doent Infiniti have replacments for them alone and not the whole running board for over $1300 per side! thats insane and no one is going to pay that for a 11+ year old SUV!.
The built-on running boards (these are not an add-on feature to the vehicle, but came standard on all qx-4s) have brackets and a tubular steel support beams that support the weight of any passenger stepping on them to enter the vehicle. The support beam and support brackets have entirely rusted away; there is little to no other rust on other areas of the vehicle. A local body shop identified and notified the owner of the danger associated with non-supported running boards. A consumer could easily be injured if stepping on the running boards to enter the vehicle and having them collapse. The injury certainly could be more acute for elderly, disabled, or children in the event of a collapse. The tubular steel support beams and brackets have no rust inhibitor on them while the other metal sections of the running boards were coated with rust inhibitor and show no rust. There was a design flaw either associated with the type of metal used or a lack of rust inhibitor on the parts that have disintegrated. The cost to replace is quite exorbitant and the replacements may have the same design flaw. The short term solution has been to entirely remove the running boards off of the vehicle to eliminate the danger. This makes for a tall vertical step-in, but is less risky then the faulty running boards.

The contact owns a 1999 Infiniti Qx4. The dealer advised the contact there was rust under the drivers front seat of the vehicle and on the frame. The rust had not completely covered the frame at the time it was noticed. The contact stated the failure was a manufacturers defect. The current mileage was 127,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Infiniti Qx4. The contact stated that the brackets supporting the running boards were completely rusted. The contact stated that when a passenger entered the vehicle, they were unable to step on the running boards to assist entering the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told there was nothing that could be done to repair the running boards. The failure mileage was 70,000. Failed aprox 3. 5 years ago. Unsupported running boards are a safety hazard. Updated 10/19/2011.
My complaint is with the 2001 Infiniti Qx4 that I have owned for several years although it has low milage 60,000 + it has cost me more money in repairs including the current recall for under body rust. I have gone through mufflers and other front end parts and my new mechanic even commented about the large amount of rust. I now have a grinding noise and it is probably wheel bearing hubs. A garaged car should not have these issues, this recall should extend to my exhaust which again needs replacing, and my grinding noise which I believe is related to the rust issue.
I believe the car's running boards are a safety hazard due to serious rust damage causing weakness of the underlying structure. The hazard can manifest itself as the running boards can easy fail and the driver or any passenger can fall as a result. This is a common problem for Qx4s from model years 1997 to 2002 or later. Obviously, it is worse for older cars in area's where salt is used on the roads in winter. I petitioned inifiniti to investigate the hazard and consider rectifying it. They claimed rust damage was not covered and would do nothing. However, I note they in fact had a strut housing recall for our Qx4 to fix rust damage.
The contact owns a 2001 Infiniti Qx4. The contact stated front driver side wheel well rusted and separated from the frame of the vehicle. The shock pushed up from the left front of the vehicle and pushed against the master cylinder which broke the steering shaft, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. The mechanic advised that the failure was beyond repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The current and failure mileages were approximately 110,000.
Corrosion in the front drivers side strut tower housing in front wheel area -body shop informed me it was a manufactureres defect. Cost me about $5,000 to repair. I still own the car.
