The contact owns a 1998 International 4700. While driving 25 mph, the contact noticed flames coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle. The dealer stated that the cause of the fire was friction, which resulted from the brakes being jammed by rust. The dealer replaced the front rotor, calipers, and brake shoes. Approximately six months later, the contact noticed flames coming from the rear passenger side of the vehicle. The dealer stated that the vehicle had hydraulic brakes, which caused the fire, when it should have had air brakes. The dealer replaced the rear brake shoes. The contact was not sure if anything else was replaced. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 45,000 and failure mileage was 35,000.

Please reference complaint confirmation number 10080983. Summary: I recently sent a complaint regarding my 2001 International 4700lp truck and the recent problems with the calipers on the hydraulic braking system. The first incident happened 05/04/04 when the left front caliper seized. The second incident happened 07/12/04 when the right front caliper seized. I got the truck repaired and back home on 07/13/04. Today 07/14/04 the rear left caliper seized today. All incidents were caused by the calipers becaoming extremely hot and seizing the braking system. The truck is back at the garage for more repairs. International is not working with us at all. The tell us it is our problem. I found your information stating your recall campaign number 03v062000 and action number ea02034. I am looking for some way to get our money back for the repairs. Total todate is $1948. 00 not including the new estimated charges of $1600. 00.

I own a 2001 International 4700 series truck. VIN number: 1htslaam81h350098. On may 4, 2004 I was traveling in west virginia when the left front hub, brake, and brake caliper got extremely hot and caught on fire. The truck seized up almost causing a severe accident. I was towed to a local garage and repairs were made. The results on the repair bill were as follows: troubleshoot brake defects/complaints. Check left front wheel and brakes. Hose flap blocked flow of fluid and caused caliper to hang which ruined brake pad and rotor. Replaced caliper, rotor, brake pads (both sides), wheel seal (left side)and hose. Filled with fluid and bled brakes. All adjustments ok. Test drove ok. The repair bill was 735. 05. There were 17333 miles on the truck. The tow bill was approach. $400. 00. I e-mailed International and asked if there was a recall on the truck or if it was under warranty on 05/13/04. The reply e-mail from john barrett, manager of customer serivces, said there was no recall or warranty. I e-mailed back on 05/15/04 and told him I disagree with his findings. His replay was International KS were not responsible for our problem. I e-mailed again on 05/18/04 asking for more information on the brakes on the truck and the reply was "no way is International responsible. Yesterday 07/12/04 the truck had 19120 miles on it and the same thing happened only on the right hand drivers side. The brake, hub, and caliper got extremely hot, caught on fire, and the truck seized up. Again I almost lost control and left the road. The truck is presently in the garage for the same repairs as on 05/04/04. The bill estimate is approximately. $800. 00. I called International and asked if there was a recall on this situation. I was told no there is not. I found on your web-site that there is a recall campaign number: 03v062000 action number: ea02034. I called International again and was told that I was making the whole thing up just to get money from them.
The right rear hydraulic brake caliper failed to release properly, which resulted in a vehicle fire. On the second occasion, the front caliper failed to release properly which almost caused the consumer to lose control of the truck while traveling 55 mph.
Right rear hydraulic brake caliper failed. The right rear brake caliper failed to release properly and resulted in a fire. The consumer was transporting a bulldozer at the time. All rear brakes and calipers were replaced. While transporting a backhoe, the right front caliper failed to release properly and resulted in a near loss of control. The there was an occasion where the axle had broken on the vehicle while in motion. (unexpectedly) the vehicle also accelerated on it's own on several occasions and was repaired twice to correct the problem.
