general problems of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Eight problems related to equipment have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2016

Jeep death wobble. Violent shaking of a car when driving on highways and I have to slow down to below the speed limit to stop it. Multiple time occurrence. Has been "fixed" but has never been fixed.

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2015

The dealer said they would inspect the hitch, and remove it if they decided. They would then determine if repairs were needed before they would install a replacement hitch. I was advised the "repairs would be at my expense" and could cost "several thousand of dollars" before a replacement hitch would be installed. They also said "they couldn't determine how long repairs would take" since they were not responsible for all the work.

I am contacting your agency because of a safety concern I have regarding the repairs made to my vehicle in response to the recall #n45. As background, I took my vehicle to a dealer, mall of georgia Jeep, for the repair (I. E. , to replace towing hitch) on 8. 12. 2014 and was told the next day that I could not use the hitch that had been replaced. The mechanic had struggled (he admitted to me) to do the job and it took him two or three times the estimated time to complete the work. In fact, it took so long that I had to go home in a rental car and had to return the following day to pick up my Jeep. When I returned on 8. 13. 2014, I was told that I should no longer use the hitch for towing. I asked why and was told that this was the manufacturer's guidance; however, I was not given anything, to this effect, in writing. I have two concerns: 1) was the safety recall repair done correctly given a) the difficulty that the mechanic had in doing the job and b) the dealer not standing behind the fiat Chrysler oem replacement hitch that it had installed; and, 2) apparently the dealer replaced a functioning hitch with one that was not without telling me so in advance. I contacted fiat Chrysler (case # 25468706) on 8. 13. 2014 and asked for authorization to take my Jeep to another authorized dealer to check the repair workmanship, I was told that I would have to pay for this inspection to be done. I believe that my concerns are reasonable and do not think it is fair that I must bear the cost of a safety inspection. I am asking your agency to help me get this inspection done by an independent party, to be paid for by fiat Chrysler, given the nature and circumstances of the issues I have raised. Thank you for your time and attention.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

I was driving down the highway, and all of a sudden I heard a loud noise. So I pulled over to the nearest gas station and realized I was leaking oil profusely. Then I realized the driver side motor mount had broken off of the engine causing a large hole in the engine block. I have taken great care of my vehicle, changed the oil every 3,000 miles, and then this happens at random. I didn't hit anything to cause the motor mount to break, so why would it break for no reason? anyways, the leaking oil caused a fire beneath my vehicle, and inside the engine compartment. But I quickly put out the fire by a container of water I had in my vehicle. I had my 13 year old brother with me and thank god he or myself was not injured. But it caused us great fear and stress.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2010

While driving at aprox. 40-45 mph, the Jeep would start to shudder. Eventually it would shut off. The Jeep would then crank but not start. I had this problem happen for about four times. Three of the times the Jeep was towed to a repair shop. Twice the pcm unit was replaced and twice the crank position sensor was also replaced. The last repair was 1 month and a half ago. Two days ago, the Jeep stalled again down the road. I was traveling with my wife and children. We almost lost our lives. A 16 wheeler almost collided with us due that I could barely manipulate the Jeep because it turned off on me. I tried to do some visual inspections under the hood. I had one of my sons to wiggle the pcm (computer) while I cranked the starting switch. At one point the Jeep managed to start again. Then it stalled the moment my son stopped wiggling the pcm. I had another tow truck pick up the Jeep and send it back to the mechanic. Chrysler has not corrected this issue on the pcm and perhaps might not do it until one day someone gets seriously hurt. Videos on youtube show other Jeep Cherokee owners having the same problem 1996-2001.

8 Equipment problem

Towing utility trailer. Trailer became unlatched. Trailer tongue punched gas tanks which might or might not cause vehicle to explode.
