Three problems related to front seat belt retractor have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I began having problems with the seatbelts on the front right passenger side and also notice one in the back seat as well. The seatbelts began retracting sluggishly. It is now to the point where the front passenger side does not retract at all. I took the Jeep into troy aikman auto mall in fort worth, texas on March 16, 2000 to have all the seatbelts looked at. I was told that all four seatbelts were going out and needed to be replaced. I contacted Chrysler customer service at 1-800-992-1997 and reported what I believed to be defective seatbelts. Chrysler had a rep in my area look at my file and reported back to Chrysler that they would pay one-half of the costs involved. They were doing this as a "good-will gesture" because of the mileage on my vehicle. I have purchased 2 other Jeeps, the last one purchased in 1988 and sold in 1996 when I purchased my current one. I have never had any problems with any of the other seatbelts and the mileage on my 1988 was approx. 150,000 miles. I would appreciate your review of this matter and advsing me of same. Thank you.
Jeep was struck on passengers side, Jeep struck another truck head-on, hitting more of the front passengers side, causing hood damage/broken windshield, and drivers gears to come out. Driver broke sternum in two places due to safety belt not working and airbags not coming out. Jeep was totalled out. ( dot number: tire size: p225/70r16 ).
