Check Engine Light On problems of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Three problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 1997 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

The vehicle stalls unexpectedly when slowing down or coming to a stop. The check engine light is on, however; the code that comes up is for the ignition which was already repaired and not the issue causing at hand. This malfunction is freakishly common when I look it up online for this make, model, and year. This problem is very dangerous as it may or can cause death or serious injury if in intersection or busy road/highway. Please notify me of any solutions or information on this matter.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2000

While driving engine check light came on. Consumer pulled over to check under the hood. Consumer indicated that before engine check light came on, gears were slipping. A couple of days before, engine quit and vehicle would not go over 25mph. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was a common transmission problem. Dealer rebuilt transmission. At another time, consumer heard a loud bang. She stopped/looked under car, and noticed oil on the back window due to engine rod breaking off, piercing three holes in oil pan. No warning at all, and then vehicle died.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/26/1997

While driving about 25 mph and coming to a stop vehicle will cut off. Starting to back up and the engine check light will come on, and the vehicle will cut off.
