Conventional Parking Brake problems of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Four problems related to conventional parking brake have been reported for the 1997 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Conventional Parking Brake problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2001

The button on the parking brake detached rendering it ineffective.

2 Conventional Parking Brake problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2000

After vehicle was parked on an inclined driveway with manual transmission on, but not left in gear. Parking brake was applied, but did not hold vehicle.

3 Conventional Parking Brake problem

Failure Date: 03/18/1998

Brake problems; at 2900 miles the disc rotors and pads had to be replaced. The emergency parking brake was also adjusted. About a month later, driver was involved in a crash when going uphill and applying the brakes. The wheels locked up, driver had no control over Cherokee. Jeep went over to the left side of the road, hitting a telephone pole. This happened on dry road conditions. Dealer would not look at Jeep. Jeep has been repaired.

4 Conventional Parking Brake problem

Failure Date: 12/25/1997

Went to start vehicle. The emergency brake was on and vehicle began rolling backwards and then accelerating. It crashed into consumer's husband's truck which was parked in the driveway, causing extensive damage.
