Six problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
1998 Jeep Cherokee se has had a fuel pump replaced (5 years ago) before the recall of same and now the engine control module has to be replaced (both times at a cost of $1000+ which is excessive and really maddening.
Engine completely dies while negotiating sharp left or left u-turn when fuel gauge reads . 25 tank or less remaining.
Fuel gauge displays inaccurate amount of fuel in tank. Dealer was notified and a new fuel sending unit was installed. . Consumer also stated while driving, the vehicle began starting and stopping, the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the fuel pump was replaced.
The consumer's vehicle is experiencing symptoms of recall 97v194002 (fuel sending unit) but the dealer will no repair the vehicle due to VIN.
While in motion consumers vehicle malfunctioned. Teh vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was determined that the fuel pump was bad. At that time it was changed. The vehicle was fine until around 55000 miles. At this time the vehicle started misfiring and hesitating at low fuel levels, but only when making left hand turns. Now the problem has progressed. When turning left with low fuel, the vehicle now stops running. Consumer is forced to have the fuel pump changed again.
The car dies every time a left turn is made, even when the fuel tank is 1/4 full. It is in my opinion that the manufaturer should have placed the fuel pickup in the center of the tank to prevent the loss of power during a turn. It is possible to have a complete loss of power during an evasive manuver, thereby losing both braking and steering ability. Furthermore, the manufaturer has installed the fuel pump in such a way that the aftermarket cannot make a replacement part. Please contact me for further information.
