Brake Disc Rotor problems of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

At 20,000 miles my Jeep Cherokee shuttered when braking at highway speeds. It was so violent it almost threw my Jeep into the dividing wall. I took this to my dealer and was told it was a $700 repair to replace my rotors and break pads. This is covered under a Jeep service bulletin but was not a recall. Jeep knew before my vehicle rolled off the assembly line that the brake rotors warped under conditions of high heat or the use of salt on the highways. This is due to the composite metal of the rotor. I then took my vehicle to my regular mechanic and had the rotors replace with Chrysler parts. Once again I am experiencing the vibration at 54,000. I have been told the same thing. I am now keeping a collection of warped Jeep rotors in hope that eventually they will be held accountable for this problem.

2001 Jeep Cherokee front brake rotors corroded. The rotors also flaked creating a hazardous condition. The dealer was aware of this prior to the end of the warranty period, but did not correct this defect. Problems with standing water in the footwell, failed air conditioner, rubbing fan and door adjustments. There was standing water in the passenger foot well. The vehicle also needed new brakes due to rusted rotors. The consumer requested reimbursement.

Brakes on a Jeep Cherokee. The brakes on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee have started shaking the car rappidly when the brakes are applied at freeway speeds. I have contacted the dealer and have been informed that this is not a warranty issue. I also called a local meineke location and was told that this is a common issue with most Cherokee's. The result is that this will cost me $300 for a problem that should be covered under a recall.

Purchased a new 2001 Jeep Cherokee sport. When brakes applied car weaved or pulled to the left. (2) emergencey stop on major hwy. 2 am front end shook violently and pulled my car onto the center grass divider. (3) returned Jeep to dealer. Service manager could not replicate problem. Brought car to independent brake repair shop. Replaced pads, and installed new rotors. Two days later car shook violently upon braking at 45mph. Returned to lithia colorado Jeep dealer. Stated warped rotors. Replaced rotors and pads. Problem is on going and will now need to have repairs done a third time in 24. 000 miles. General manager of lithia states he can repair brakes but not solve the problem because both he and Chrysler know the rotors are defective they simply replace the old rotors with new defective rotors. . When applying the brake front end vibrated. Dealer determined that front and rear rotors were warped.

While applying the brakes vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle. Drove the vehicle to dealer for analysis, and mechanic noticed that the brake rotors needed to be replaced.

On the way to the dealership, the brakes locked up and the consumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle. The dealer replaced the rotors.

The front rotors were worn which caused extended stopping distance. The front brake rotor had disintegrated. The brake pads only made contact with 75 percent of the rotors.

The rotors were warped, which caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.

Front brake rotors and pads are wearing excessively from 26,400 miles to present mileage. Repairs made at a repair shop. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Complaint received via e-mail. I have had a consistent problem with my brakes since I brought it. The first failure occurred at 9012 miles. Dealership replaced the front calipers and rotors. Then at 18811 miles dealership resurfaced the front and rear rotors because they were warped. At 24,806 miles the failure recurred. Dealership replaced all 4 brake rotors. Currently, at 32,000 miles the failure recurred, but the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer, dealership, and other Jeep owners informed me that this was a design flaw that occurred in the earlier and some later model Jeeps, but has been modified in 2005 model. The consumer stated that the vehicle was taken in for repair three times while under warranty. The engine light was on for one week. The low coolant light comes on when the vehicle is started (cold) and goes off when the vehicle is warm.

Vibration when braking, more at 50 mph and higher and at low speed. Rotors were grounded in June of 2001, then, replaced 10 days later. Then, grounded again in November 2001. At this time there is vibration again.

When applying brakes, vehicle vibrates/shakes severely. Dealer notified and informed consumer that front brake rotors were out of round due to overheating.

Vehicle and steering wheel shake violently between 50-60mph. Rotors warping was a preexisting problem that started at 9,000 miles. Dealer cut rotors stating, that Chrysler only does repairs not replacments per Chrysler. Please add more information.

The rotors are warped on my Jeep after less than 20,000 miles. This makes it very difficult to stop when applying the brakes and the entire vehicle shakes violently including the steering wheel. Obviously this is a defect that daimler Chrysler is aware of. Too bad they won't admit it. Hopefully it will be become a recall.

When brakes are applied vehicle vibrates. Dealer had surfaced front and rear rotors, but problem has reoccurred. Humming noise from steering when making sharp left turns. Front window skips when putting window down with auto, dealer lubed window tracks.

When braking vehicle starts shimmying with great force at high speeds. Dealer has been contacted and shaved down rotors. Consumer had a 1997 grand Cherokee that experienced the same problem, consumer states the vehicle shaking upon braking makes vehicle seem unstable.

Also a brake problem that they said they fixed by rotating and cleaning the rotors. Is this fixed?.

Rotors are pitted less than 20000 miles. When applying brakes vehicle is not stopping properly. Vehicle has a pulsating action. Contacted dealer, and dealer urged consumer to bring vehicle in . Please add VIN.

Severe vibration when applying brakes at highway speed. Dealer was notified, and replaced front brake rotors on three occasions within every 3,000 miles. But, problem still occurring. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

Front brake rotors wapred after only 5000 miles resulting in steering wheel shudder on braking.

Consumer states front rotors continue to warp after (2) replacements. When ever the truck hits a bump while traveling 50 mph or above will shake violently. Owner is concerned about controlling the truck when this happens. Also the upper and lower ball joint was loose which was causing the steering wheel to shake, the transfer case was loose, the gasket and thermostat was replaced due to a coolant leak, cruise control was inoperative, the air condition and heater only blows at defrost vents, the rear luggage rail came out.

Consumer was informed that the rotors had spots on them and needed to be machined.

The brakes shimmied and shuddered excessively when applied, since the vehicle purchased. Dealer diagnosed cause as defective rotors.

I have been concerned about the braking system as the shoes were cracked and needed to be replaced at 5745 miles. At 12503 miles the rotors needed to be resurfaced. Now at 15, 200 miles I still feel a vibration upon applying the brakes and the service department has been very patronizing. They state it's my tires. The goodyear tire dealer stated that if there is vibration upon applying the brakes it is not the tires but it is the brakes. The service department at action motors has been stalling me so that the car reaches 18000 miles and will be ineligible for the lemon law return. I believe there are other Jeep owners with the same problem. I've spoken to several Jeep owners and they stated they had the same problem. . Unfortunately I did not get anyone's names and addresses but I believe that the NHTSA should investigate all the service records of the Jeep Cherokee to ascertain how many persons had problems with the braking system. While driving, the front end shook. The dealer replaced the front rotors eight times, but the problem recurred. The dealer did not know why the rotors were wearing out prematurely. The dealer suggested that the rotors could not be fixed properly because of the substandard parts Chrysler used. The vehicle would ride rough and the brakes seemed to squeak only when it rained.
