general problems of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee - part 1

There was a recall on 2016 Jeep cherrokee latitude fuel pumps - I think several years ago. This VIN not on the list. But, the fuel pump has gone on this 2016 Jeep several weeks ago- vehicle stopped in busy city roadway. Towed to repair place -another make of fuel pump installed- then gas gauge not keeping track of gas . Called Jeep dealership in warren, PA; and was told no one has these main Jeep fuel pumps. None in any 9 locations. They are on back order throughout the country. Sounds like there is a problem with the 2016 Jeep fuel pump. It needs to be recalled. This is a no brainer; and, not fair to Jeep customers that this issue wasn't made public and that the company didn't make a recall on this pump. There is a waiting lists for these pumps won't start distributing them till December. Please help with this matter.

I was going home, speed limit 55 mph, so thats what I was doing. A SUV entering a intersection ahead of me, ( I dont have a stop or yield sign, but they do) the SUV never stops, rolling into the intersection, as im entering the intersection at 55 mph. I tried avoidance at last second to no avail. My front drivers corner smashed the middle, passenger side of the other SUV. My Jeep continues to the right, uncontrollable, stops in someone's front yard, engine still running. The other car swerved to the left, still on the road, rolling on its side. My airbags never deployed, I didnt even get any lights on the dash, I had to shut the engine off. Not one airbag deployed, and nothing even recognized there was something wrong. This car is supposed to have all options for airbags, yet a collision at highway speed, with post wreck travel of less than 50 feet, and not one single air bag deployed. I very literally could have died right there. I honestly dont know how I didn't.

Car goes into "limp mode" while driving. Will slow to a complete stop, not rev, and says "shift to p then desired gear". All other components of car are on (battery barely a year old). Try to follow command prompt; after putting car in p, and shifting to d, it still won't rev. I was on an incline and began rolling backwards. Good thing no one was behind me at the time. Had to turn completely off. On startup, it's stuttering and takes a while to start. Turns on fine and will drive, but is physically jerking between gears. Then, the first time I have to stop for a significant time and idle, it will do it again. I follow process again and was able to record video, because I was on a back street and pulled over in time, luckily. Upon driving the next day and taking to dealer, it is still jerking. Dealer cannot replicate and shows no error codes, so they say to just keep driving and can only help if I bring in while it is happening? that is literally insane. Same thing happened a year ago, but after filling up and being on "empty". I went to a independent mechanic then, which is why I was hopeful the dealer would have more insight into the problem. That mechanic also could not replicate. They said it could be a fuel line or pump issue and to never let gas get too low, or go through costly man hours to check the fuel line, but then it couldn't be that at all, so could still be back at square one. That time, it stopped me in a busy intersection twice and was far more terrifying. I decided to skip the potentially pointless and definitely expensive fuel line investigation. I decided to take it in again when it happened and followed the "don't let gas get too low" directive and had no further issues until 5/5/25.

Vehicle lost power while in traffic was running weird jerking check engine light came on a! light came on vehicle wouldn't stay running. Codes read catalyst system efficiency. Recall u90 issues recall u67 issues code p0430, p0300,p0175, p0174.

On two occasions within 5 days while driving the vehicle, (the vehicle was in motion) it suddenly stopped and the would not accelerate making a whining noise as if the car was in neutral. The dashboard then said to put the car in park. Or shift to park. I tried to turn off the vehicle and it didn't immediately want to restart, it was full of gas but sounded like it was empty. I was able to finally turn it on.

I received an fca recall notice, gw270231, for my 2016 Jeep Cherokee latitude related to the catalyst efficiency-u90 recall on 1/22/24. . I attempted to schedule a recall service appointment at two different local Jeep/Chrysler dealerships. The first one (aritioli Jeep) enfield, CT. Stated they were unable to obtain the correct parts and that I should keep calling their parts department to know when the parts were obtained. I scheduled the recall service with bertera Jeep/Chrysler in west springfield, MA for 2/29/24. I was informed on 2/26/24 that my appointment was canceled because they did not know when they would have the required parts. The service representative stated it would take months and advised I should call them for a status update each month. I need assistance and support to ensure the required parts are sent to the dealership so I can resolve this Jeep recall issue promptly.

Engine light came on oil light came on. Had it checked. . Oil is leaking from the housing directly onto the engine could cause fire.

For last yr I keep having car want stall did recall on it. Helped for bit, then it’s always wanting stick between 2/3 when trying change gears. On different recall it fixed for bit the temp on transmission bouncing back forth a lot in temps. I have recorded video to show it. Now my engine light is on for p0441 code with power train possible evap leak. It just keeps being one problem after another like it’s not wanting to get gas to it what seems like. It’s all happened over last year and engine light came on sat.

While driving, when attempting to accelerate, the vehicle dies. Have to pull over, shift into park and attempt to restart. Sometimes restarts quickly, sometimes you have to crank and crank. Also dies if you have to stop suddenly. Example, when someone pulls out in front of you or changes lane/swerves in front of you. Problem was intermittent, in cold weather, when vehicle was cold. Now, it is likely to happen at any time. This creates a dangerous situation, trying to get off of the road when it dies. Check engine light is on, and "lightning bolt" dash light comes on when vehicle stalls. Ran diagnostic - revealed no code.

January 4, 2022 I was in and accident. My vehicle was in the repair shop for 90 days. The car was repaired and was in good working order. The other person involved in this accident was a 17 year old female. She was not injured. ’ on 4/12/22 I took a trip, stopped for gas, attempted to make a left turn in the station but the car malfunctioned ( like a standard transmission) and ran over the center divider. I filled the tank and no problems afterwards. May 31, 2022 as I approached a left turn the car malfunction, (bucked like a stick shift. ) I was struck by another vehicle, my car was hit with such force it overturned, spun around the opposite direction and struck a pole. However, it was not a head on collision because my vehicle had no front damage. The airbags deplored and I had serious injuries and a concussion. According to bystanders, the other vehicle speed was approximately 50 miles per hour; the speed limit on this roadway is 35 mph. It is a dangerous rode with many fatalities this year. The driver in this accident was an 18 year old male. He was not injured. There are no traffic signals for more than one mile. It is a heavily traveled rode and the on and off ramps to i95. I have complained many times to our 911 operator about people speeding, running the red light and stop signs.

All of a sudden you are driving and the vehicle wants to shut off like it's getting gas got cut off and it will buck back and forth like a transmission issue then all of a sudden it kicked back in and you continue to drive as normal but if you're at a stop and you go to take off it could be very dangerous if it stalls out on you.

I was driving my son to school one day about 2 months ago maybe longer and all of a sudden out of no where the car shuts off saying low oil pressure. I changed out the sensor. Thinking that would fix the problem. Well that sure isnt the case. I burn a quart of oil 3rd or 4rh day of the week evey week taken it in no can find the problem. Now I see there a recall say needs a pcm up date. Maybe it it fix the problem. Probaly not. I think Jeep really needs to go over the Jeep engines with a pick and comb and find these problems its scary drivong I am so affraid iam am going to be an a realy bad accident one day. My car always shutting off while driving iys not fun. Its even worse when I jqve my child in the back seat and is helpless because he straped up in a car seat. Part 2 if I fill my Jeep up. With a full tank of gas it stalls and shuts of in the middle of traffic driving. Or sitting at a stop light this happens every time I full my car up si no I dont fill it up because it like to shut off. So it getting to the point I want to set it of fire and roll it down a hill!! (kidding I would never do that!!).

The shifter light came on on 04/01/2021. It remained on the entire trip home from my school of employment. I noted this is a popular problem with this model. Previously, I had very scary problems with acceleration several times and this is documented in an ongoing suit that has not been resolved.

Car has had repetitive issues losing power directly after a sharp right hand turn. Completely loses power for a few seconds but long enough to potentially be rear ended. I have had it in the shop 3 times and they cannot correct the issue. I have been dealing with this issue for the last 30,000 miles and seems no help is comping from the dealership or manufacturer. I was originally told that it was a low oil issue although the oil was not low. This is the v6 version and does not consume oil like the 4 cylinder. Vehicle has been reflashed twice and dealership is unwilling to find source and fix. I have one particular turn on to a interstate highway I make every day and the vehicle consistently stalls on that turn. It is a potential for a serious accident and should be addressed by the manufacturer. There is hundreds of complaints online with the same issue and yet no recall or even a service bulletin. Please please please intervene before someone is injured.

Vehicle hesitates, vibrates, looses momentum, shutters, almost stalls when ac to touched since the day I bought it at napelton Jeep in palm beach fla. I was told it’s a Jeep thing. The engine roars to like like it’s fighting to start. A fan sound will go on and off non stop effecting the power and rpm’s. A loss of power happens and then the car goes back to normal after a completely shaking the cab vibrating and shuttering.

Was turning left and vehicle shut off midturn was nearly rear ended took Jeep in shop didn't fix was still under warranty also was driving when all Jeep instrument warning lights came on and lost all power coasted to a stop restarted, shifting became sluggish motor started knocking took to shop to get fix spend over 2000 bucks to get fix now they want 7000 bucks for engine.

In motion on a city street going 35 mph the engine shuts off; steering and braking become disabled and car costs into traffic. No warning lights or dash board symbols turned ever on. Vehicle has to be towed to a shop to have the oil changed/replaced after only 200 miles since last oil change. Engine burns oil (not leaking) at a high rate. Oil needs to be checked weekly and replaced on a 2-3 month schedule. Only 35,000 miles on the car.

Drove car for only 2-3 blocks after sitting 8 hours while at work (first time 11/12/19 - outside temp in the 30's) and the second time overnight in unheated garage (11/23/19 - outside temps in the 30's), while turning right at a stoplight to enter on to a major artery (first time) and a stop-sign to enter onto a residential street (second time) the car shut itself off coming to a complete stop. Both times car was not "warmed-up" before driving. Contacted a local Chrysler/Jeep dealer who got us in for check-up 11/27/19 and eventually said the engine oil was below the dipstick and if the oil gets too low the engine will get hot and to prevent engine damage the car will shut down automatically. This has never happened before despite us traveling for the past 4 summers approximately 4000 miles from kansas city to yellowstone national park and back, and the summer of 2018 to yellowstone, seattle and back (total of over 5000 miles and each time not getting another oil change for over another month to 5 months of city driving once we got back home. The last oil change we had before these two incidents referenced above was on July 19, 2019 and the mileage was 53191. The mileage on the car now is 56916. Taken into account that we've probably driven about 150 miles since the first incident until right now, that means we're "down" 1 quart/1800 miles. Researching "google", there are multiple complaints from other Cherokee owners of 2016 or other year models of the same issue. They say Jeep feels 1 quart of oil used/1000miles of driving is acceptable. Even so, my concern is why my vehicle is suddenly experiencing this power loss and oil usage when for the past 5 years (purchased car 10/31/2015) it has never been an issue. One oil change mileage was over 7500 miles and yet we never had this problem. The oil light has never come on to warn of low oil pressure.

The car began jerking as if in the process of stalling while driving on the highway. Then, whenever the car was stopped at a light or accelerating the stall like jerking would occur again.

1. Thermostat state as problem to make engine chug/stall 2. Air compressor / clutch unit needed at 61,000. Have 75 anniversary Jeep and really nothing but problems!! not happy.

Vehicle, while in motion, stalls and engine shuts off at any speed. Being told oil burns too quickly in these vehicles and this is a safety feature the car has although it has almost cost me multiple serious/potentilly fatal collisions with my infant children in the vehicle. No oil indicator has ever turned on indicating oil level is low. Had same issue with this car at 15,000 miles in which engine was completely replaced but now is doing the same thing as before. This is a well documented issue amongst Jeeps - why has there not been a recall? this is a major safety concern and our lives and the lives of our children are at risk as I almost was t-boned today as my engine stalled in a busy intersection. I was attempting to turn but had not yet maneuvered and was left stalled in the middle blocking oncoming traffic on a busy city street but had had this same problem happen on a highway.

2016 Jeep Cherokee limited fwd, misfiring and shaking began while stopped at traffic light and while driving afterwards for 1/2 mile. Automatic start/stop was on. Pulled off road and turned engine off and let set for 1-hour. Restarted vehicle and began shaking and misfiring again. This time engine light came on and start/stop system warning came on. Shut vehicle off again and let sit for 30 minutes. Started vehicle again and put in reverse, drove for a few minutes and vehicle began shaking and misfiring again while going through the shifting sequence. Drove it to a dealership and it did this the entire way, approximately 10 miles. No matter what speed I was driving it was still happening. The shaking/misfiring seemed to subside a little when a/c was not in use. In addition to other warning lights coming on, service-shifter light came on while making a right-hand turn.

Engine shuts off on sharp turns. Display center says message saying vechicle must be stopped to change gears and shuts off engine. The shifter was not touched when message came up. Then engine doesn't want to start quickly. It hesitates. Stutters to restart.

Has been back to the dealer 4 times in one year for replacement of spark plugs and ignition coil. Car runs rough and shakes. 53000 miles, have had it since it was brand new. Feel unsafe driving in it.

Periodic strong gas smell in cabin.

At 61,000 miles my Jeep started having a strong fuel smell in the cabin after coming to a stop with the auto-start dis-engaged. Reading online, many people on the forums have similar issues with Cherokees since the early 2000's with no known malfunction to fix. The exhaust smell has caused headaches in the last week.

Vechile stalling while driving. The vechile will stall driving at low speed turns, up hills and coming to a stop. Second time it has been to dealership for same problem. First time was June 30 2016. Second is today.

Several times in the past 3 months (6-8 times), without warning, the car shuts off. The engine completely stops regardless of in motion or accelerating from a stop. It has happened each way. It shuts off, and the vehicle computer provides a message that you must be in park to start the vehicle. I shift to park and it starts up again. When it shuts off the power steering goes and you cannot control the direction of the vehicle. There are no symptoms and no warning but I see enough of the same complaint that I am reporting it. It has not happened at highway speed yet, and I am afraid it might based on the other Jeep owners comments.

Bought car August 2016, first noticed severe jolt/kick August 2017. It appeared randomly. So severe that the first 10 or so times I really thought I was rear ended. When traveling around 40-45 mph car jolts/kicks/jumps/drops (pick your term) when the car shifts gears. Doesn't happen every time, mostly when traffic is creeping along. And noticed that the car idled very roughly out of the driveway just before the check engine light came on all three times. Dealership resets computer then says they can't replicate issue, I've taken it in 3 times now for these issues with no real resolution. They are replacing valve body this time, my car is under two years old and I do not feel safe driving it anywhere.

The check engine light is on once in two weeks. My local dealer in san diego (rancho Chrysler Jeep Dodge) said that there is a problem with engine gas valve. They said it was leaking. Each time this is the issue. This is my 4th time going to the dealer. I strongly believe that its very risky for passengers to drive such cars with leaks. I request NHTSA team to please review all Jeep Cherokee models as they need re-calls and its unsafe for public to drive such leaky vehicles. I was very afraid when I was turning on highway and my car started noise as if something is bursting, it was very frightening moment.

On several different occasions now, after accelerating from a complete stop the car will start to accelerate and then it'll no longer respond to pressing down the accelerator. The engine does not rev and no speed is gained as the car continues to coast. I have been able to remedy it by shifting into neutral and back into drive. No warning lights or indicators appear signaling an issue. This typically happens on city streets after exiting the highway and has occurred when going straight from a stop, or while making a turn after a complete stop. Car currently has less than 35,000 miles. Has not been taken to any dealership, since there has been no indication of failure.

Shortly after fueling my vehicle my vehicle will lose all acceleration. It has been a problem since the car was first purchased and continues with 30,000 miles. It occurs about 70% of the time after fueling. The most recent occourances caused me to stall on a major roadway. I was nearly hit by a trailer. In order for me to gain power again I must shift turn the car off shift to park and then restart the car. .

Problem began with the car bucking significantly after changing gears. Then, when the car was in drive (but foot was on the brake), car would start to buck again, transmission slowed, car would not accelerate, kept bucking and lights in car dimmer. Had to keep restarting the car to get it to keep going. But, once I used the brake again, the bucking and loss of acceleration would start all over again. Dealer continues to state that the computer in the car is not registering any problems at all. Has been in the dealer 3 times over the last 3 weeks. This all happened when the vehicle is in motion, on any kind of street or highway, whenever the gear begins to cause bucking after changing.

Mileage mpg is nowhere near epa sticker displayed on Jeep when purchased. Perhaps this is due to mechanical problems? (see tranny slippage report) same trip, same/similar driving conditions, no stop-and-go traffic, flat-ish highway, no wind, hot weather [I. E. Less windage], should average about ~28mpg, but average is ~20mpg. Also, average mpg is dropping (I. E. Was ~26mpg . . . Then 24mpg . . . Then 20mpg. ).
