60 problems related to steering have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My vehicle died in the middle of me driving without warning. I was on a main road turning into a mcdonald's when my car died. I was going about 20 when my car died. My steering locked up, couldn't brake or accelerate, and had to pull over and turn my car off to and back on to get it running again. Once I got my car started again the idle kept pulsating above one thousand rpm and would have to keep it in neutral at a stop so it would lurk forward.
2006 Jeep Commander vehicles is shutting off randomly while driving and the steering wheel is locking up. Also the lights on the dash board flicker randomly. Mechanics could not find anything wrong. There is no recalls on my specific VIN but for other 2006 Jeep Commanders. I do not want my family and I driving down the highway and it's does this and we die then you finally say oops yeah there's a recall on that. . .
Car rolls in park from time to time unless the emergency brake is set. Makes very loud grinding noise when in reverse afterward. Has "service 4wd system" message. No mechanic has been able to identify the problem.
Had the ignition switch replaced according to recall. After a few months, it has become very difficult to get key to turn to start vehicle. Took the vehicle to larry miller in albuquerque nm, they want to charge me 300. 00 to repair. According to previous owner it worked fine before taking it in for recall.
After having the recalled ignition and tcm replaced/reprogrammed the esp,bas and traction lights come and the two driver side brakes and tires lock up, makes a terrible grinding noise, and the vehicle slides while trying to make a turn. This problem occurs while the vehicle is in motion and without warning.
I went to start my 2006 Jeep Commander and it would turn over, but it would not start. I finally worked with it a little bit and got it to start, but then my power steering went out. I cut it off and tried it again and everything went back to normal. However, when I got going, there was a horrible gas smell coming from the rear of the vehicle. This starting issue has happened multiple times and every time the power steering goes out. The vehicle was stationary at a public place after it had been running for about 30 minutes.
We have a 2006 Jeep Commander and it sometimes jerks back and forth while driving sometimes it even shifts into neutral and then back to drive the power steering works only part of the time and the airbag system says its off all the time and it will shut off while driving sometimes too really frustrated with this vehicle its a disaster and waiting to happen.
When I am driving on the main city road or highway I notice about three things that happen all at once. The first thing is I lose control of my steering. The second thing is it feels like my Jeep went into park causing all my wheels to break for 1 to 3 second. The third thing is it feels as the engine stalled. All these things happen at the same time. This causes my Jeep to stop or stall on the road sending me and my passengers to lounge forward as if I had hit an invisible wall at full force.
Jeep has total loss of power, control, and steering while driving. Car will no start unless in park or neutral, losses all power electrical and steering once you let foot off of the accelerator. I almost ran into another vehicle while heading hope and was nearly rear ended at another intersection due to stalling and no control. All of this happened within hours of ed voyles Jeep replacing the ignition switch p41 recall. Super super dangerous. . .
Just as I was slowing down to 30 mph to enter a parking lot the entire dashboard lit up and then all lights faded and turned off. The ac turned off and the radio turned off. The car still continued driving but the power steering was gone, causing the car to shake and jolt mid turn. The brakes weren't working as they normally would resulting in a very dangerous situation had any other car been close to me at the time. I took it to my mechanic right away and he tested everything, including the alternator and the battery. Everything was functioning at 100% capacity and he couldn't find a reason for the check engine light to be on. This has happened 3 more times. I am unable to drive the vehicle in fear that it will break down or my family or another driver.
My vechicle was recall ed over 2 years ago for steering wheel switch and I keep getting letters to come in for repais but they never have parts. My car is unsafe. I want it fixed. I've experienced the incident 5 times.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn causing the contact to crash into a pole. The contact did not specified if a police report was filed or if any injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) however, the part needed to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving the car shut off. No speed or power steering. This occurred on a busy road and a crash was avoided. I have called Chrysler and was told the recall parts are still unavailable.
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. The contact also stated that the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received a notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and believed that the failure was related to the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000. Djr.
P41 / NHTSA 14v-438 engine shut off while driving. Removed everything from key chain, and left enough space between knee and key. When car bounces, cannot control knee. Happened more than 5 times past a month. Called Chrysler, have no estimated time for parts production.
Can you tell me when Chrysler will have parts for my vehicle that is on recall for ignition switch. I am still having problems with the vehicle cutting off while driving. I have the recall notification for some time now and waiting for them to notify me when I can have it repaired. I worry about the vehicle continuing to cut off at any time while driving and may cause an accident with the steering locking up. I enter the date above as today which is not the recall date only to complete this form. Thank you robert adams.
While driving the vehicle on a slippery road during a snowfall, my wife observed all of the indicator lights on the dashboard light up simultaneously. Shortly thereafter, the engine shut off, causing a loss of power steering and consequently a loss of control of the vehicle on the slippery roadway. As a result, the vehicle slid into a highway maintenance marker along the shoulder of the road, causing minor damage to the license plate holder and bumper of the vehicle. Our concern is that this incident is apparently due to a defective ignition switch, which is the subject of a current recall (14v-438) issued by the manufacturer on 9/3/14. However, the manufacturer has not provided a remedy for this defect, citing the unavailability of repair parts, and as of this morning the manufacturer has no idea as to when these repair parts will be available. In the meantime, the phenomenon of the dashboard indicators suddenly and spontaneously illuminating while driving continues to recur rather frequently, and we are afraid that a recurrence of the engine shutoff and loss of power steering and brake assist will also recur, perhaps at a time and location where a much more serious crash will result.
Help please!!!!!!! I have come here and filed complaints on this vehicle a few times! there is currently a recall on this vehicle, however there is no solution so we are forced to drive in a very dangerous situation! my Jeep dies on me almost twice a week!!! I am 5'1 my knee's are no where near the ignition switch! I have taken off everything from my key ring since it started dying in July!!! today I am in tears! we have snow packed icy roads and my Jeep died as I was turning a corner, barely missing another vehicle and with no power steering I was able to get to a curb. I can put the Jeep in park and restart it, but today was a close call! I drive my children in this vehicle!!! we have no other vehicle that I can use! I cannot responsibly sell this vehicle, I would feel horrible if something happened to another family!!! this agency is set up to maintain the safety of the consumer, please, please help us who are driving this extremly dangerous vehicle! I am copying this and sending it to whatever media outlet will listen!!!.

I was driving; the dashboard lit up and the air bag sign said air bags disengaged. Then the car shut off. I restarted it after several attempts. I want to know when are you going to get this problem fixed. I was fortunate in that I was driving slowly in town. But it has shut off a number of times. I keep only the key in the ignition and it has still done that. To me I think if I am driving on the interstate or some other high volume and high speed area and this occurs again causing an accident you will be the ones to blame.

Today not 10 minutes after filing my complaint I got in my car and while driving the car stalled after my knee barely touched the key fob. I was paying close attention since I had just read about the investigation.
The vehicle has shut down on multiple occasions this week while both idling and when in transit. It caused a loss of steering capability and operation of the of the vehicle causing a safety issue. Calls have been made to both the dealership and the manufacturer without satisfactory resolution. The dealership acknowledged multiple complaints with the same issue.
Everytime I drive my Jeep it stalls and the wheel locks up (basically turns into manual steering) and my brakes lock up ( no brakes at all) and I had just bought this Jeep a wk go from mcgee Chevrolet in raynham MA. The first night I drove it home it stalled pulling in to the driveway. I called the dealership the next morning to tell them and they wouldnt take the Jeep til the following wk to look at it they came up with every excuse in the world. When I brought the Jeep in today they had me sign a deductible of 100 dollars but yet when I first test drove the Jeep it I told them to fix it but all they did was cleared the codes (flashed the computer) now I have a rejection sticker on the vehicle and no car.
On multiple occasions in the last 2-3 months the car has stalled out while driving at speeds over 60 miles an hour. Everything including the lights etc. . . Shutdown when it stalls. After pulling over the vehicle will restart fairly quickly.
I received a safety recall notice from Chrysler for my Jeep Commander stating that I may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving, which could result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking, and increases my risk of a crash. I have called Chrysler group recall center 1-800-853-1403, option 6 countless times, unfortunately many times having to hang up after waiting 25 minutes to get through. I have also repeatedly called beyer/Jeep/Chrysler 973-644-3200 and they have been very short with me and tell me the same thing every time I call- they have no date of when the part will be in. When I drive on the highway, I am terrified of losing control of my car. I have seen on the news people that have been in accidents because of this ignition switch and heard that Chrysler has a buyout program. I am interested in finding out about this program because I think that waiting over a year, and with no resolution in sight, is a bit ridiculous and I don’t want to become a statistic. Please advice me as to what my next step should be.
While driving and turning a left corner resulted in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking. This has happened on several occasions and we have stopped driving the family vehicle due to this safety issue which is not deemed safe to drive especially up and down hills. . . . We had to purchase another vehicle since the recall fix is still not available and won't be for over 1 year!.
First annoyance was the inside door handle on the drivers side. It failed to open the door at around 45,000 miles. Then the rear passenger inside door handle just crumbled out of nowhere around 47,000 miles. Then around 50,000 miles the brakes felt different when braking and it felt to hard to press down on the pedal to stop the vehicle. The brake pedal felt hard as a rock then the abs warning lights came on and after a diagnosis I was told that it had to be replaced. Whenever we went through a puddle of water on a turn the Jeeps steering would lock up and just kept moving forward & not turning.
Driving north from detroit with my uncle, passing a semi on I 75 at about 70-75. The engine just quit, likesome turned the key off. Got to the side of the road, put vec. In park started back up drove home. Took Jeep to al serra,s the 29 th got it back 6/2/14 found no reason why it shut down. June 15 th when driving on bristol road at 45 mph it quit again, took it back to al serra,s 2days later got it back, still couldn't find cause.
Driving home from work yesterday, when my steering wheel suddenly locked and truck started dying, and I almost hit a guard rail . Turned the engine completely off and tried to turn the engine back on, but my truck would not start. Had the truck towed to the dealer that day 04/25/2014. Received a call from the dealer on today's date 04/26/2014; truck needs a new tipm module. A new tipm module was just put in my truck at the same dealer a few days short of a year ago (04/27/2013). Problem is so common with Chrysler that the module is on back order (nationally). There is no recall for this issue and it is seriously dangerous! I have read other complaints in regards to the tipm module (lawsuits as well). Does someone have to die before Chrysler does something? I am now afraid to drive my vehicle after the new tipm module is put in (whenever that will be) or to have passengers ride in my vehicle. Please please please help before someone is seriously injured or killed. I have no idea what I'll do to get back and forth to work because module is on back order and the dealer does not do loaners.
The vehicle randomly shuts off. The dash gauges flicker and/or go off for a brief time. If breaks are engaged at that time, abs stops. If headlights are on auto, they turn off. If turning a hard left or right (such as turning into a driveway, turning on to a street, parking) power steering stops working. If the lights are on but not on auto the lights stay on. The radio stays on. These symptoms would indicate that there is a problem with the ignition switch. When this issue occurs, it seems to stop by pushing on the key. This has happened multiple times. After visiting this page, a log will be created to record date, time, and speed. This is a huge safety issue. After much research many users of internet forums for Jeeps, complain about this issue (reference urls can be provided). The NHTSA campaign number: 14v047000 sounds very similar in nature. Could the NHTSA look in to the parts being the same?.
Often my whole electrical system will flash on and off and has since Jan 2009. Three times since March of last year vehicle has turned its self off while driving (complete steering loss), fortunately at low speed. Also, in 2010 ( I have repair receipt) my transmission control module went out. I had to pay a $200 copay per request of Jeep to have it replaced, after much argument. They said my particular 2006 Jeep Commander wasn't part of the recall, as was all other failing parts included on 2006 Commander recalls, excepting ignition. Still waiting on ignition fix, its been a year.
While driving the Commander at various speeds everything suddenly turns off. Acceleration is immediately decreased and all dashboard functions are gone. I have to shift to neutral and re-start the engine, all while still driving. This is very dangerous. I have had this car for 2 months.
Was driving down road and lost power, car stalled. This has happened a total of 3 times with yesterday being the 3rd event and I was traveling about 55 mph with the last incident.
