general problems of the 2016 Jeep Compass - part 1

While driving at any time, the speedometer will instantly drop and the car feels like it's about to shut itself off. After a diagnostic with a mechanic, they stated this was the crankshaft issue; similar to a recall for other 2016 Jeep Compass. My VIN is not currently associated with this recall notice, however based on these safety defects, it seems it should be considered under the recall.

The crankshaft sensor has failed.

My vehicle is experiencing the same symptoms as recall 16v907 (s89). Crankshaft shift sensor but the VIN was not bringing up the recall.

I’m having problems with my catalytic converter.

The problem happened twice, this month: first incident, waiting at a red light, light turned green, I took foot off of the break and car turned off. Placed hazards on, put car into park and turned car off and then started back up. Reserving out driveway, went to shift from r to d and my car turned off. I placed the gear shift back into park and turned the car back on. There was no warning lights or lamps when this happened. I called the dealership where I purchased the car to confirm if there were any recalls. They asked for my VIN # and stated there was no recall for this type of problem. I found online that other 2016 Jeep Compass owners, did have the same issues occur and it was a crankshaft recall. Due to my manufacture date of 10-15, this was not considered a recall problem.

While stopping for red lights, stop signs, or traffic congestion the gas pedal lost power. I would have to turn the key off and back on again to regain acceleration.

Crankshaft position sensor was replaced twice in 2022 and once in 2023. It now needs replaced again.

On Sunday, 4/14 as I was driving, my Jeep suddenly lost power and stalled. I was able to get to a median. I waited a few minutes, started the vehicle and was able to reach my destination. The next day I was driving on the highway at approximately 65mph when the engine shut off again. Fortunately there was not a lot of traffic and I was able to coast to the berm of the road. The check engine light came on. Family members came to help. We started it a few times and tried to drive but would only get a mile or two and the same thing would happen. I had to have it towed to a repair shop near my house. The mechanic drove it the next day to see if it would act the same way. He also lost power and it stalled again. He told me that the code that came up was a crankshaft sensor failure. He replaced the part the next day.

My passenger side headrest imploded on my 2016 Jeep Compass without an accident or collision. Dealership is only replacing the passenger side headrest; told me that they weren't doing the other side because it hasn't deployed yet.

I bought my car in oct 2022 and it ran fantastic until this summer (July 2023) when it shut down while drive. The shop told me it was the crank shaft sensor. Fixed it. But that didn't fix the stalling issue. Had my car towed back in and they ran it, ran a lot of test on it. Finally they let it run for 30mins and found out that when the car heats up, it stalls. They told me this has to do with the sensor/engine/transmission and basically since it's hot outside as the car heats up it sends a message to the engine/transmission to shut down.

While driving, our Jeep suddenly turned off. We had to immediately pull over to get out of traffic. When we tried restarting it would act like it wanted to start but the engine would never actually start, & we noticed the etc dash light was lit. Pulled out the manual, followed the instructions with no luck. My husband got out & opened the hood & noticed a burning smell. That is when we decided to call a tow truck. I had driven the Jeep earlier that day to & from work & for an errand after work with no problems & no warning lights. The vehicle is @ the dealership now, but since we didn't have an appointment I've been told it may take up to 3 weeks before they can get to it.

When turning key stalling to start car. Finally car wouldn’t start and I went to auto services and they said I probably needed a new battery. So I purchased a new battery. Now it’s about two months later and car is hesitating/stalling to start again as I try crank the car up.

I was driving my children to school, my car started shaking and hesitating. No engine light came on. We live in the middle of nowhere, poor cell reception. Down the road, I turned onto a main highway and my car continued to shake and hesitated. My car would hardly go forward. I had lots of cars in front of me and behind me. Had cars passing me cause I was going to slow. Finally had to pull on side of the road and turned into the airport parking lot. Here I shut off my car, and turned it back on. Finally the check engine light came on. I tried to put Jeep in drive wouldn't move forward. I tried to put into reverse and wouldn't move back. My car was on, but wouldn't go any where. I had to call my mom to pick up my kids for school and wait on a town truck driver. The auto repair transferred my car to a transmission specialist who stated my transmission had a lot of damage and I would need a new transmission for over $4400. I believe these Jeep Compass should be recalled for faulty transmission and faulty warning that anything was wrong with the car. My engine light came on way too late, only at the part where my transmission failed. Seems like a person is owed a light to know to take this in to get fixed. My children and myself could of been killed pulling out into the highway since my car refused to go anywhere. This is the worst vehile I have ever own. So cheaply made. Now I have to pay $4400 when my husbtand is on dialysis 3 times a week, and I need this car to drive him there!!!.

Whenever I fill up my vehicle with gas when driving down road it starts sputtering and jerking like it is going to stall out. It will do this even when going down an interstate at 65 miles an hour. After having driven it for a few days and the gas drops down the problem goes away. This started within a couple of weeks of my purchasing it in July of 2023. I took it the garage but they told Jeeps just shifted hard. This isn’t a shifting problem because it wouldn’t be shifting when I’m on the interstate.

Friday 06/17/22 parked care to go to excise class for 1 hour, when returned the car was running/had been started , I thought maybe the key control hit another set of keys in my pocket however, when I arrived home, and cut car off, and went in house the car started again and this happen several times that day. 06/18/22 went to walmart and parked car, when returned to car and unlocked the car door ,the car automatically locked it self, I unlocked it and it locked itself again. Then when got home locked the car and went inside the house, the car then started up and was running again. Also, the radio am/fm stations not working , only the sirius radio stations are.

The Jeep will stall/stop running at various points while in motion, when stopping, when starting. There is no rhyme or reason as when this might occur. I can have the ac running or not, the heater running or not. There is no mechanical process that shows me this will happen. It is completely random. I understand there was a replaced part as part of the Chrysler s89 recall in April of 2017, which is out of warranty according to Chrysler. The problem is still persisting and is a safety issue for me considering it stalls randomly and while in motion. I purchased this vehicle from carmax in June 2021 with no notice of the former recall and issue.

Vehicle loses power while driving. Has issues with steering, acceleration, brakes.

My car is intermittently stalling on idle. . . .

I am getting a knocking sound coming from the passenger side in the glove box area when I turn on my "heater" and "ac" from the control button in the dashboard area. I am sitting in the car after starting up the car and then there is a loud continual noise coming from the glove box on the passenger side of car. I need to know is this a "recall" issue in this year and make of Jeep? please help me find out what this means in my car. Is it dangerous to me as the owner? thank you for your kindness in this matter.

Abs 4wheel drive and traction control light stay on and won't come off and since they popped up I've been having issue with my acceleration. It's been causing my car to randomly stop accelerating while I was driving on the highway. My 4wheel drive light pops on a few minutes after I start driving but the other 2 lights stay on all the time.

Every. Single. Time I try to open my hood, the release located under the hood (not inside the vehicle) will not move. I have had to use a board to pry the lever over and have taken it to the dealership and they had to use a giant screwdriver. It is practically impossible to open the hood by myself. Just now I tried pushing the lever with a board as I have done before, but the latch will not budge even then--if anything it only moves further onto the "ring" instead of off from it. In case of an emergency, ie. A beginning fire or possible fire in the engine, I would not even be able to get a fire extinguisher in there, I would just have to stand back and watch my car go up in flames. I have nearly broken my hand trying to get the thing open and I cannot even change the oil now.

Car throwing catalytic converter code. Was in shop 3 times this year with engine issues. Stalling out on me in the middle of nowhere. Misfiring on multiple cylinders. Driving up hills overheats losses power only goes 40 mpr up hills. Cuts out randomly.

My car shuts off while driving very dangerous to cause an accident almost was in 5 please put a recall on it.

For a while now when my car accelerates between 3 and 3. 5 rpms the throttle control sensor goes off, and when that happens traction control turns off check engine light goes on and I cant go over 20mph.

While getting onto a highway, my rpms dropped and I temporarily lost power steering and started slowing down, then it "caught" and I was able to drive it straight to a car place to get the free diagnostics. Everything came back normal so I left. Later in the day as I was pulling out of my neighborhood it stalled again and completely shut off this time. When trying to turn it on again it either would but then would immediately stall again or it would just never start. While trying to turn it on, all the dash lights light up including check engine, which has not been on until the car stalled the second time.

Takata recall. Sunroof leaking when it rains. This is an issue that makes it unsafe while your driving.

My vehicle was being driven down a highway and was pulled over in the early morning by a state trooper. The officer came up to the vehicle and stated that there was no tail lights. We were giving a warning and was told to get it fixed and we were on our way again. Since then still haven't come up with a solution to fix it. All other lights like head lights, reverse lights, turn signals, brakes lights and bright lights all work just not the tail lights. I believe that it is something with the tipm because I ran a diagnostic on it and was given a code which also stated the tipm reading is low. It has not been repaired yet due to how much it coasts to get it repaired.

I have driven this vehicle for 3 years with no issues until recently. I take care of it and maintenance it regularly. Around April 29th I felt some steering issues and brought it in to firestone who told me it needed to be taken to the dealership. At the dealership, they replaced an abs sensor and a few tire sensors. Since then on multiple occasions the vehicle has randomly and intermittently stalled while driving. I can be driving at any speed and the vehicle will randomly lose acceleration, power steering, and brakes. It has happened after a turn, while just going straight at 45 mph, while in stop-and-go traffic, and when trying to accelerate after sitting at a red light. There is no rhyme or reason. The ignition has to be turned off and turned back on to restart the vehicle. I have nearly caused a collision twice. I brought it to the dealership on June 22nd and they had my car until June 25th. They replaced the crankshaft position carriage, and some frayed wiring. The issue happened 3 more times after those repairs. I had it towed to the dealership on June 27th and it is still in the shop (today is July 2nd). They are telling me they cannot recreate the problem and want me to take the vehicle back without doing any repairs. I am now working with the gm and cfo of the dealership to try and resolve this and I have filed a complaint with Chrysler (case #59096741). I do not feel safe driving the vehicle and I refuse to put my children in it. All service records that I have are inside the vehicle at the dealership.

Can shaft sensor.

My car has not been starting up. The car would sit for 5 minutes at the least and would not start up right away. I was told it could be one of my sensors so I changed the crankshaft sensor but am still having the same problems but worse. It makes a clicking noise like it's trying to start but won't and the lights flicker, everything resets but doesn't turn on. Now it does this any time I try to start the car. At some points the lights would go off in its own and coke back on or just flicker after it has been started. If and when I can finally get it started, when I press the gas to accelerate or going up a hill, it hesitates and pulls back hard. I then came across this particular recall on my exact vehicle and wondered if maybe this is the same issue causing the same problems. This has been going on for a few months now.

Car jerks when accelerating after making a turns.

The engine keeps stalling. Its similar to the same description for the recall that just so happen my car isn't linked to dealing with the crankshaft or camshaft.

Jeep repeatedly leaks from dome light after it rains. My map light is filled with water when it rains. I had puddles of water in front and rear passenger foot area. The car smells really bad. My Jeep Compass stopped in the middle of the road just a month after I bought it.

Takata recall, I was driving down 435 highway with my kids and my engine stalled. I had to pull on the shoulder turn the car off and restart the car. This happened on Thursday the 12th of April 2016.
