Six problems related to engine shut off without warning have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The Jeep engine shuts off unexpectedly. This occurs after approximately 25 minutes of driving. It can happen during high speeds on the highway 60 + mph or during idle when stopped in traffic. This is extremely dangerous as I had to avoid several accidents. The Jeep might start immediately after a short wait, or can take a day and start with the same problem. The gauges go off, with the fuel showing empty, then the engine simply cuts off without any prior warning. You lose all power, brakes, steering etc. . . This is a serious problem that appears to be documented all over the internet without Chrysler stepping forward to make the necessary corrections that might eventually save lives. It does this problem, whether you are idle condition, making a turn, traveling a short distance or on the highway in a middle lane surrounded in traffic doing 65. The weather also has no effect as it has occurred during warmer weather and cooler weather. I am lucky to be alive as I recently avoided a rear end collision.
Within the last 6 months my Jeep's engine has shut off" while driving" at various speeds 5 different times but not exceeding 60mph. Four of the six times I was able to shift into neutral and restart the engine, two times I had to wait approximately 5 minutes before it would restart. The incident at 60mph happened on a 4 lane highway and luckily I was close to the shoulder when it shut off and I was able to get it off the road before the steering locked up and no one was hurt. The computer never registers any problem and my mechanic has stated that it could be numerous issues but nothing for sure. To the best of my knowledge Jeep has never issued a warning or recall for this issue. This is extremely dangerous and an accident just waiting to happen.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving between 30 and 50 mph, the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road without warning. The contact almost crashed at the time of the failure and lost control of the vehicle before pulling off to the shoulder. The vehicle would not restart immediately most times, but would start approximately three to four minutes later. The dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000. Updated 11/17/08 the consumer believed the problem was electrical. Updated 11/24/08.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would completely shut down. There were no lights and no power steering when the vehicle shut off. There were no warning indicators prior to the failure. The failure also occurred several times while driving 75 mph. The contact had to wait 2-3 minutes before the vehicle would restart. She took the vehicle to the dealer a few times and they stated that the crank sensor was the cause of the failure. The dealer removed and replaced all the codes; however, the failure recurred three times afterwards. She returned to the dealer in April of 2008 and was informed they wouldhave to run more tests. The contact then traded in the vehicle for a newer model. The current mileage was 83,074 and failure mileage was 81,808. Updated 07/15/08. There was a noise coming from the steering when the consumer made left turns. The hatch shocks were replaced.
The engine, while in drive going ~60mph, from time to time, shifts into neutral and/or even shuts off completely on its own accord. At stop lights, stop sign, etc, while in drive with foot on brake, the engine shuts off on its own. I asked multiple dealers and reported it, they said it was a fuel problem. Please add this to your recent Jeep Grand Cherokee "preliminary investigation".
