Hood Hinge problems of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Three problems related to hood hinge have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Hood Hinge problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2003

While checking under the hood struts snapped, causing the hood to fall down. Dealership notified, but the problem was not resolved.

2 Hood Hinge problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2003

The pistons holding up the front hood assembly failed and can no longer bear the weight of the hood. No one was injured when the initial failure occured. This presents a major problem when servicing the vehicle as there is no other reliable mechanism to hold up the hood. Placing a stick or other object to hold this open is an accident waiting to happen. Jeep was contacted and would not pay for replaing this faulty component. Other pistons which hold up the rear hatch as well as the pop-up glass also cannot effectively hold up the weight of the conponents they were designed for.

3 Hood Hinge problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2002

Between years 3 and 5 replaced both tail light assembly units. Not covered under extended warranty. Problem starting vehicle. Took to dealer at least 5 times. Dealer kept replacing fuel pump and saying it was bad. Problem still occurs. Replaced transmission sensor. Replaced hood hydraulics. Now hearing noise from rear end at any speed. Being told by my mechanical that rear end needs to be replaced.
