1 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2007

This past winter ('07-'08), the rear driver and front passenger automatic door locks on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo began to make a loud quacking noise upon locking and unlocking. Also I recently discovered that these two doors must be manually locked as they no longer lock upon automatic locking with the remote or with the master control on the driver door.

2 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2007

I have a 2000 Jeep gc laredo, and along with many, many other people I have numerous problems. The warped rotors are very dangerous when you have to use your brakes, especially when you have children in the car as I do, also the taillight/brake light issue, that has gotten me pulled over more than once, even though I put a new bulb in it every time. The door lock actuator that is very annoying not to mention my transmission has a shifting problem that I can't do anything about and now my radiator fan will not work so my car will overheat if I am stopped for too long.

3 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2007

Door lock actuator on both driver and passenger(front) side failed. Unable to open with key alone. Must press keyless entry and also turn key. Actuator make grinding/quacking noise when keyless entry used. No repairs attempted as yet. Dealer cost is approx $ 250 per door. Front rotors wear excessively and quickly. Results in violent and dangerous shaking of vehicle when braking from mid-range speeds (40-45 mph). Have had rotors polished twice within 8 months.

4 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2007

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Since July 2004, there has been problems with the power door lock solenoids, one after the other. As of this reporting, I have had to have all the power lock solenoids replaced, including the back hatch which was replaced the Monday prior to this writing. The problems started with the rear door solenoids, left door first, then the right. Problems were significant enough with the rear doors that they could not be opened from the outside after they failed - only from the inside by manually unlocking the door (the outside does not have a key slot). I have incurred almost $2,000 in repair costs over the last 30 months replacing the mechanisms. The same repair shop replaced all five units, and all five replacements are currently functioning. They furnished me this website to contact due to the trouble that I have seen.

5 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2007

The passenger side front door lock of my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee failed in such a manner that the door could not be opened from the inside or the outside. This turned out to be only a inconvenience for me, however if this happens during an emergency someone could be trapped inside the car.

6 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

To whom it may concern, I am writing to you about a two serious safety issues with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. First, the door locks are all starting to fail. Without warning they fail to operate and you can not unlock them. This is a serious safety issue if a rescue worker can not get into my vehicle to rescue my children. Second the rear brake lights continue to fail intermediately. This could cause a grave accident killing me or my children in my vehicle. I have talk to twenty to thirty Jeep owners of this same model and approximate year and they all have the same problems. . Read more...

7 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2006

: the contact stated that the door actuators on the vehicle would not move the locking mechanism to lock or unlock all four doors. This defect caused the door locks not to unlock when locked and vice versa. The vehicle was not taken to a mechanic for inspection.

9 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2006

Blend doors on the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee climate system were broken at the time of purchase, dealer would not warranty items, claiming it was an isolated problem and not an ongoing problem with Grand Cherokees, and quoted me $1200 to repair them ,and to expect them to go roughly every 2-3 years. It seeemed to me like a manufacturing issue and customer's should not be liable for covering it. Apparently it affected 1999-2004 models, so it was a recent model.

10 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2006

Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as I was along a winding road. Towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. Approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. I thought I was going to die when I experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. In 1 year that I own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, I have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. I never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle.

11 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

1. Normal day activities such and using the lock or unlock button on the door panel or remote control to unlock or lock the doors. 2. The door fails to lock or unlock the door and it makes a loud buzzing noise. Sounds similar to a duck quack, it is very loud. This can interfere with the child safety lock functioning properly. 3. 14 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2005

Purchased the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee in may 2003. I was filling up my car with gas when someone else asked if I ever had problems with my brakes. At that point I didn't. In April 2004, I was driving on the highway and noticed that the car would shake uncontrollably when applying the brakes. Didn't shake as bad in city driving. I went to my local car repair shop and they told me the rotors were warped. Paid to have the rotors spun. Now it's a year later and the car is shaking uncontrollably on the highway. Didn't think I was going to be able to stop from hitting the car in front of me. Now I have done research on the internet and see that this is a known problem and that it is listed in the technical service bulletin from Jeep in 2002. This is my family car! I too have had to replace the 2 of my door motors and 1 of my window motors. I can't believe that there are this many complaints and no one is forcing Jeep to put a recall on the rotors.

15 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2005

Power door locks on our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo are not working correctly. Not only is it annoying, but often when someone is in the car the door locks will lock you in and you can not get out. You can't even manually unlock the doors. What if there is a fire?.

16 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2005

1. )the door lock actuators on our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee are all failing. There are plastic grinding noises that ultimately lead to complete automation failure. . )the consequences of this failure is that it is not possible to lock the vehicle doors, or unlock the effected doors. The consequences are also that the auto door locks are not operational. If the vehicle were in a crash the doors might either be locked closed, or the doors might fly open because they cannot be locked. The auto door lock feature that the Grand Cherokee has when the vehicle is moving would be rendered useless. 3. )the driver door actuator has been replaced with no help from daimler Chrysler. The rear driver side has failed, the rear passenger is about to fail. They have not been replaced yet due to the high cost associated with this repair.

17 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2004

I have already replaced 3 door lock "actuators" on my Jeep and on my way to replace an already replaced one (driver door) to make the total 4. After looking on your website it looks like this is a very common problem. The response I got from Jeep is that my vehicle was out of warranty. This is very frustrating since I have had a multitude of problems from this vehicle. The date of incident is only my most recent. I hope that something gets done and Jeep does not get away with faulty equipment in their vehicles.

18 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

The driver's door automatically locked, and then could not be unlocked. I drove to my local Chrysler/Jeep dealer, and they said it was not a safety issue, and was not covered because the car is out of warranty. I think it * a safety issue, as I had to climb out through the passeneger side door, because the drivers side door could not be unlocked or opened, even with the manual unlock.

19 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo - front door locks started to buzz and would not work properly. Safety issue living in a city, I want to be able to lock my doors when driving or parking in a public area.

20 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2004

I have had my 2000 Grand Cherokee for a little over one year. In that year I replaced the actuator in the drivers side door. It made a loud screaching noise. Now both of my back doors are making the same screaching noise and I will have to replace them. Overall, I am very happy with the performance of my Jeep and glad that my problems are not under the hood! but. . . As a brand, Jeep should be embarassed that every time I lock and unlock my doors a loud noise is heard by everyone around. I think that Jeep is a favorable brand in the minds of most, but this noise makes my Jeep sound like a piece of junk!.

21 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2004

Automatic door locks failed. Consumer was concerned that the occupants would become trapped inside the vehicle in an emergency.

22 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

I am writing to express my frustration and anger regarding my 2000 Grand Cherokee. Since this past October, I have experienced a myriad of problems which include the following: 1. A broken ventilation deflector which prevents any air from coming through the ventilation. I spent nearly $100. 00 to find out that it is a $37. 00 part with $500. 00 in labor just to install it. I have children in the car, and the summer heat of 100+ degrees is in my mind, dangerous. 2. All of the passenger doors cannot be opened either manually or remotely from the outside or inside. I received an estimate to replace the lock actuators at a staggering cost of $500. 00 per lock! the doors cant be opened from the outside or from the inside without systematically unlocking the doors with the remote, then reaching in from the drivers seat to manually unlock them from the inside. It doesnt take a genius to see that this is a huge safety issue if I happen to get in an accident and the passengers (children) are unable to get out of the vehicle. The Jeep mechanic said this is a common occurrence with Jeeps for quite a while. 3. The driver side mirror broke when my wife was adjusting the angle of the mirror. There is now no tension to hold the mirror in place. All of these problems began 8 months ago and I am more than a little angry about it, especially when none of these items are covered past the 3 year warranty. All tolled, I am looking at spending somewhere in the range of $3000. 00 to fix these problems. Right now I am extremely unsatisfied customer, and expect some healthy measure of cooperation from Jeep.

23 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2004

Door actuator failed. Thereby creating potential safety hazard condition. The frequency of door actuator failures leads me to believe there is a design and/or manufacturing defect. When the dealer was contacted, their response was "the vehicle is out of warranty". I find this completly unacceptable.

24 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2004

The vehicle was equipped with automatic door locks. The rear passenger doors will not allow entrance from the outside. Owner took the vehicle to the dealer, and had the passenger side rear door repaired. Currently, the driver's side rear door was defective.

25 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2004

Currently, two doors (driver's side and the driver's side passenger door) makes a loud grinding sound every time I automatically unlock the door. Over the last month, there have been times where I was unable to unlock either one of these doors and had to crawl into the car or out of the car from the passenger side. This apparentally is a trend in the Grand Cherokee and should be recalled due to the very serious nature of this problem.

26 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2004

Automatic locks failed intermittently. The consumer was concerned that occupants will be unable to get out in case of an emergency.

27 Door Latch problem

Passenger's side door failed to open either automatically or manually. Door was equipped with child safety lock.

28 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2003

Power door locks lock and cannot open doors. Front passenger door locked 12/23/03 and rear drivers side locked 1/11/04. You cannot get the doors open by any method.

29 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2003

Eletronic door locks would not operate properly on the front passenger door side. It would make a loud whirring noise when trying to activate the locking system. It made it impossible to get in or out of the vehicle. We were lucky that there was no emergency to get out of the vehicle. I have noticed a large amount of other situations regarding this type of incident.

30 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2003

On 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, 3 different doors have failed and you can't open the doors until you replace something called a "door actuator. " of the 5 doors on the Jeep, 3 have failed and 3 new actuators installed. 2 failed while on warranty (12/2002) and the third just failed, 12/2003.

31 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2003

Right passenger door began making a loud grinding noise when locked. Occasionally, it will not unlock automatically with the rest of the doors, and I have to reach through the front passenger side and slide the door unlocked. I have children, and this could be very dangerous if there was a situation where I needed to quickly get them out of the car.

32 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2003

Power locks on the Jeep have recently failed to operate properly. Unlocking the Jeep causes a loud screaching sound and now 3 locks fail to unlock leaving the passenger unable to get in or out of the vehicle. This could be considered a hazardous situation if an accident were to occur and the occupants were unable to exit the vehicle. Observation of similar reports to this complaint forum shows a track record of faulty lock acutators. Considering the potential hazard, should this not be investigated for a recall?.

33 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2003

I have taken my 2000 Grand Cherokee twice this year for replacement of the "actuator" and the door latch. This affected both doors on the passenger side of the vehicle and is now moving to the drivers side. The lock will make an awful sound while locking and unlocking. It will eventually freeze up and neither lock or unlock. Each time covered under extended warranty although paid a deductible. The dealer will not replace all at once since they have not gone "bad" yet. Thus far only 3 out of 5 doors are damaged.

34 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2003

No one was killed, potential lock out of vehicle.

35 Door Latch problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2003

Front door locks broke, keeping the doors from opening from the inside of the vehicle. Consumer will contact manufacturer.
