Six problems related to automatic transmission park/neutral start switch have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Laredo. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While vehicle was idling and in park it jumped into reverse and started moving backwards, hitting a tree. Vehicle then started moving forward and went into a lake. Note: the vehicle was making a "clunking" noise when shifting from park into reverse.
After putting vehicle into park and without any indication vehicle started rolling backwards.
While putting vehicle in park and getting out noticed vehicle was rolling backward, and on consumers leg. However, consumers leg stopped vehicle from rolling further.
Transmission shifted into park position & driver left vehicle. It jumped out of park into reverse. Vehicle cross highway & hit some trees & went into a ravine. No one was in the vehicle at time the gear jumped from park to reverse.
While my Jeep was in park and the motor running, I had to get out of the car, it shifted by itself to reverse, and in trying to stop the car from running into my neighbors house the car rolled over my foot.
Transmission put into park and driver left. It jumped out of park into reverse. Crossed a highway and hit some trees, and ended up in a ravine. No one was in the vehicle at the time .
