1 Steering problem of the 1999 Jeep Laredo

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

We bought a used 1999 Jeep grand cherokee larado last year for our son to drive, thinking it would be a safe vehicle for him in all kinds of weather and road conditions. We did not expect to have problems driving on the highway on dry roads in perfect weather. The vehicle has started to stall at highway speeds, causing a loss of power steering and brakes, and most likely air bags as well. We are lucky he is a safe driver, and was able to get the vehicle off the road safely. Our trusted mechanic, who is a Jeep owner, changed the crankcase position sensor, this did not help. He advised us to bring it to the local Jeep dealer, because they would be better able to troubleshoot the problem, reading the codes, as opposed to throwing parts at it. The dealer cleaned some ground wires, gave it back to us, and it stalled on the highway going home, and wouldn't restart. We had to wait for a tow truck in a hazardous location in a rainstorm. We brought it back to the dealer, and they keep it for a week. Put 50 miles on it test driving, and couldn't duplicate the problem. They didn't charge us for this, they seem like they are trying to help, but they don't seem to have a good handle on the problem. The problem could be caused by any number of electrical components, from the computer, to the wiring, to sensors, modules, even the ignition switch. No codes are displayed. In looking on this website, I found 5 complaints from just 1999 and 2000, for the same problem. One woman is terrified to drive it with her three kids in the car. This is not confined to just these model years. There are a lot of these vehicles on the road, some people have been able to fix the problem, some certainly have not because it is hard to pinpoint. How Chrysler has been able to duck responsibility on this serious problem for so long is beyond me.

2 Steering problem of the 2003 Jeep Laredo

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

I was going approx. 40 mph when I ran over a small bump in the road and the entire truck began to shake uncontrollably and I almost lost control. I applied the brakes and only when I slowed to approx. 10 mph it ceased. I have had it in the garage since Feb. 3, 2014 and have spent well over $3000 and it still isn't fixed. I have had the entire front end rebuilt and have replaced all the bushings in the rear end. I will never ever buy a Jeep again. I think it would be nice of them to reimburse some of the money I have spent over the last 3+ months. If I had to get a rental car, I would be in the poor house. I don't know what else to replace.

4 Steering problem of the 2006 Jeep Laredo

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Similar to recent gm problem, when driving, my knee touches the ignition switch, which then shuts down the engine. This has happened on multiple occasions and I have been able to safely steer the car to the roadside. I am concerned that, if this happens when my wife is driving, she would not have the strength to safely control the car.

5 Steering problem of the 2001 Jeep Laredo

Failure Date: 06/08/2005

I hear a honking noise and feel vibrations when making slow left hand turns (ex. Parking). The slower and tighter the turn, the louder the noise and the more vibration. I brought the vehicle to the dealer at least 4 times for this problem and was told there was nothing they could do about it.
