Every time I go to the gas station and fill up my tank, the pump doesn't shut off and it spill about a cup full of gas. Also after some research there are many other Jeep owners that are dealing with the same problem!!!.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

Gas tank would not take fuel. For 177. 00 the dealer told me the safty valve was stuck in the fill tube and I needed 1400. 00 for a new tank. Only 72,000 miles and all new valves ,2 recalls and now this. Never again.

6 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2012

For the second time in less than a month my gas tank has overflowed while filling. I went to a different pump than the previous time. This time the pressure of the gas going in when it overflowed was enough to cause the gas to spray back out and upward towards my face. I have a 3 year old who rides in my vehicle all the time including when I stop for gas. I have to take her out of her carseat and carry her inside to pay. Gas gets on my hands which I can't go inside to wash off without getting gas on her in the process. If I would have been standing in front of the gas nozzle this time, it would have sprayed into my face and eyes.

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

I purchased a 2005 Jeep Liberty from a dealer lot 01-27-2012. Today I filled up the gas tank for the first time and it overflowed on me, got on my jeans legs, jacket, on the ground and on the left rear quarter panel of the Jeep. The dealer filled up the gas tank before it was taken off the lot, and I was not informed of any problem by them. This vehicle transports my 3-year old in it!!!.

8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2012

When going the gas pump to get fuel and placing it on automatic, when full the pump shuts off and then it "burps" back at me. Spilling gasoline on me and everything around me. It is also ruining the paint on my vehicle, spilling all over it every time this happens. I have owned the Jeep since 2006 and it just started doing it about four months ago. My tech said it must be a faulty fuel tank filler neck. It was replaced at the cost of $443. 50. And that did not solve the problem. He thought someone had tried to steal my gas and damaged it. It still burps every time I fill it up. I consider this very dangerous, besides being a nuisance and damaging other things. I have checked this out on the internet and find that this is happening to several others who are owners of Jeep Liberty's. There is a demo on you tube .

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

Gas tank overflows when left filling at gas pump, does not activate auto off at any pumps for gas flow. Issue that seems to appear in a lot of Jeep Liberty's.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

When fueling the vehicle, the vehicle no longer causes the gas nozzle automatic cutoff valve to operate before fuel is overflowing down the side of vehicle and on the ground. Until this fall, the vehicle usually cutoff the nozzle as the tank was full - very full - but prior to overflow. Starting two months ago, the tank always overflows at every pump used. This gasoline spill seems dangerous and is an environmental concern. I have noticed that mine is certainly not the first complaint of this nature, and it seems to be becoming a prevalent concern with this particular vehicle.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2011

Hi, I own a 2005 Jeep Liberty for my wife, purchased it with 20k and now with 98k we have a consistent problem with gas pumps not shutting off at any of the stations where I have purchased gas. At first I just assumed it was related to a particular pump, but have found that it overflows no matter where I purchase gas. I have done some research on Liberty owner’s forums and talked to others who have the same problem. Some have had their tanks replaced, which seems to solve the problem. I believe that this is a serious danger, especially with 3 young kids of ages 7,5,2 and if god forgive something horrible would happen and certainly an environmental issue especially when such efforts are made to even control vapor emissions on modern vehicles. The first time the tank overflowed my wife relates it to me as being scared, surprised and soaked her leg and shoes. When trying to pump gas it just literately just not easy it takes about 10 minutes to pump half a tank manually. The stopping the pump to avoid spilling gas is not suitable long term solution. I’m concerned about the environmental issue, but am more anxious about the safety issue this causes, especially for my wife and kids. It’s bad enough driving around with the smell of gas around the Jeep, but I hate to think about other worse scenarios such as a fire or having gas sprayed in someone’s face. I hope there is a fix for this and believe that it should be covered as part of an emissions and customer safety related service campaign. Please let me know how to get this fixed. Thanks, signed….

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I just had to have my fuel tank replaced because the overflow function did not work when filling the vehicle with gas. The auto-shutoff did not activate causing gas to waterfall out of the tank when the pump did not shut off when filling gas. This is the same problem for which the Jeep wranglers were just recalled.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

When pumping gas into my car, when it approahes full, gas spills out of the tank. It does not recognize when the car is full with gas, and gas spillage occurs. I contacted chrylser and brought the vehicle for a diagnosis into a Jeep dealership. The stated that the fuel tank needs replacement which would cost approximately 1600 dollars. They would only cover 50 percent, which I cannot afford, and will not take any other responsibility with helping with this repair.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Gas tank over fills on 2005 Jeep Liberty. When pumping gas , automatic shut off does not work and tank overflows. Very annoying and very dangerous.

15 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Gas spurts out the filler tube when the vehicle is being filled and it is near full. The automatic pumps do not shut off as they would when the vehicle's tank is full. This happens regardless of whether I am filling with the convenience lock on the handle of the pump or when filling the vehicle squeezing the pump handle myself.

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2011

The fuel tank on my Liberty spews gas when filling (my warranty has expired). I filed a complaint with Jeep, and their response was they would replace the gas tank if I pay a $500. 00 copay, which to them is a "one time gesture of good will", and to me is unacceptable. There are hundreds of complaints all over the internet on Chrysler vehicles with the same problem, and it's my opinion is there should be a recall and the fuel tanks replaced as a safety precaution - warranty or not. Apparently, Jeep doesn't regard gas flying in your face as their problem, and I'm shocked and appalled they are not required to fix it.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that whenever she refueled the fuel tank, gasoline fuel would spew back from the tank. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was refueled. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. The current and failure mileage was 109,114. Updated 05/12/lj.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

Once again, gas shooting out of my 2005 Jeep Liberty fill instead of the pump shutting off when the tank is full. No it's not "operator error" or "bad fuel" or anything else other than poor design. It happens every time I attempt to fill the vehicle at any pump at any station. This defect has been reported again and again to the NHTSA by many people and they still refuse to do anything to force Chrysler to fix these vehicles. Chrysler refuses to acknowledge any design problem. (and cigarettes are not harmful either).

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

Gasoline pump fails to shut off when filling the fuel tank. One pint to one quart spills out of the tank onto the filler and the ground. Potential fire and environmental hazard. Happens almost every time the car is filled.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

Several months ago, gas started violently splashing back out of the gas tank at the end of every fill-up. I investigated and found this is a well-known and well-documented with a faulty inlet tube check valve. I don't try to overly top off the tank or anything like that. This is not a user issue. . 21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2011

When I fill up my gas tank and let the pump do the automatic shut off it overflows. Gas leaks out of the tank, on the side of the car, on the ground and sometimes on myself. This is dangerous and leaves a gas smell in the car for at least a day.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

When I fill the car with gas, gas spurts out of the pump after it shuts off. This is a serious safety issue and it appears that Jeep is aware of the problem but has refused to do a recall for the fix. I was told by the dealer that the only way to fix it was to replace the entire gas tank at a cost of over $1,200.

23 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Gas tank overflows while refueling and splashing gasoline all over car, ground and person (if nearby). Huge safety and fire issue. Shutoff doesn't engage and happens both during the filling process or when full. Pulling nozzle out some does not help problem. Ambiant temperature doesn't not matter. Live in colorado with both hot and cold, same issue. Dozens of of complaints on this site and on Jeep blogs about this issue. Chrysler needs to fix before someone catches fire or a station blows up. I am sure the gas station owners would be happy to join consumers in getting this dangerous situation fixed for everyones sake.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

My 2005 Jeep Liberty spews gas after filling up every time. Estimate was $1800 to replace the fuel tank assembly.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2010

Gas tank overfills and spills gasoline on every fillup, started occurring at under 70k miles.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

While refueling gas will overflow the filler tube, splashing anywhere from a pint to a quart of fuel onto the ground. This happens on every fill up. The only way to prevent it is to guess when the fuel tank is nearly full and listen for the fuel to approach the top of the filler tube with the fuel flow from the pump as slow as possible. The other alternative is to not fill the tank to full, guessing about where the fuel level is by putting your ear close to the filler hole. In either case there is still danger of spilling fuel onto the ground and on the vehicle itself. The other side effect are high levels of fuel vapor smell inside the vehicle itself. This smell persists for quite some time even with the windows in the down position. This happens every fill up and has been happening for about two years. Doesn't matter which gas station I go to.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

When refueling, the pump routinely doesn't shut off until gas has overflowed the tank onto the ground and who ever is pumping the gas. This happens at any gas station.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

While filling fuel tank air trapped in the tank does not vent properly resulting in fuel spillage on the vehicle and ground. This happens at every fill up.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

2005 Jeep Liberty fuel tank overflows during full tank fill-up. This has happened at multiple fill-up stations and is almost certainly not a result of any particular pump defect. During a full-tank fill up the auto-shut will engage but only after spilling fuel over the car and onto the ground creating a dangerous situation. The frequency of the issue has been increasing over the last several months. The problem now occurs after almost ever fill-up. Upon further research this is a common problem experienced by many other owners of this make and model.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

Gas tank over flows every time I try to put in a full tank of fuel. No matter how slow I fill it will spill over every time.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

The gas tank on my Jeep 2005 Liberty renegade overflows each time I fill up the car now. This happened the last three times I filled up, even tho we used different brands and gas stations. This is a serious safety hazard as it spills gas all over the person filling and the ground!.

32 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

When filling the gas tank on this vehicle, it fills up and then overflows before after the filler shuts off. This spills gasoline out and onto the ground. Potential for fire and it's bad for the environment.

33 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

When refueling gas tank, fuel spews out of the filler neck, spraying owner and surrounding area regardless of the station or pump used. When tank nears the full status, it does not shut off as it should but builds up pressure and then spews out of the tank. This has occurred 5 times now.

34 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2010

When filling up gas tank for 2005 Jeep Liberty renegade, it does not shut off when tank is full, causing gas to gush out.

35 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. During fueling gasoline would spray out of the fuel tank, which caused the surrounding area to be submerged with fuel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. A representative from the manufacturer stated that they do not have any reports referencing the failure. They would not assume responsibility for the failure. The failure mileage was 98,000.
