2 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

This problem pertains to the 2006 Jeep Liberty crd 2. 8l diesel. Under acceleration from 55 mph to 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and would not go over 3,000 rpm. When the vehicle slowed to 45 mph, it would not increase speed, effectively in a "limp-in mode" . After the vehicle stopped, the engine was shut off for about 2 minutes then restarted. The vehicle traveled for approximately 5-7 miles with no problems then the incident happened again. The vehicle was towed to the Jeep dealer where it was purchased and after two weeks the dealer basically gave up trying to fix the car. The issue has not been fixed and as I scan the internet I find this is a common yet dangerous problem with this vehicle.

3 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

Over the past few months, I have occasionally smelled a kerosene odor while driving my Jeep Liberty diesel. Today, I read about a common problem with the fuel heater on the Liberty diesel and so I checked the heater on my vehicle. The plastic insulator around the electrical pins of the fuel heater connector (on cable) is discolored and partially melted. Doing further reading this evening, I discovered that this problem can also be a source of fuel seepage. Although I didn't see any evidence of fuel around the connector, this is obviously an electrical problem and may have been also been the source of the odor I have been smelling while driving. I feel fortunate to have discovered this in a pre-failure condition and have not (yet) experienced a serious fuel leak, engine fire or engine stoppage due to fuel system failure, I was disappointed to learn that your agency was aware of this design problem back in 2007 (pe07041), but closed it with apparently no action taken. In my opinion, this condition certainly warrants a manufacturer's recall and repair. I have photos of the partially burned connector on my vehicle, should you be interested in seeing them. It is quite obvious that the electrical capacity of this connector is being exceeded and is a serious design flaw.

4 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/09/2010

2005 Jeep Liberty diesel. Fuel/water separator leaks fuel through the heater electrical lines. Known fire hazard that Jeep/Chrysler has not recalled. Raw fuel runs out the live electrical heater lines.

5 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Several things 2 list: vehicle = 2. 8l diesel Jeep Liberty, 2006. The codes are p0093 & u0121. 1st) it says a large leak in the fuel system. Something in the emission system. Has happened several x's. I've had it towed 4 this. Engine runs rough & quits @ x's. No power. Changed fuel filter & did air leak test in the fuel return system / tech at Dodge Jeep dealer. No air in return line found. Problem still exist on an intermitant & sporadic x frame since June 2010. Last x occurred = 8-20-10ish. 2) low boost from hole in the waste gate actuator vacum tube from improper routing at factory. Found by tech at Jeep dealer. 2 visits many hours & $$$. Egr valve replaced @ same time. Big $'s. 3rd) belt squeak from bearing going out in a/c compressor /dealer tech??? 3rd visit. Need a/c compressor he says. Previously changed tensioner pulley for this problem but did not fix problem. They now say its the a/c compressor??? 4th) right rear electric window motor failed 10-2-10. Replaced motor/regulator assembly 10-7-10= $172. 99. I should be reimbursed for all parts & labor for these damages. I paid a lot of $ for a supposedly good vehicle but it keeps failing. 5th) part time 4x4 light on dash says its in part time 4x4 when in two wheel drive. Haven't repaired cause of $. Please note that because of low power I was almost in several accidents because of the low turbo boost at acceleration. There could be injuries or fatalities in the future if this happens to someone else that's not mechanically inclined and not aware of reduced engine performance of a turbo failing slowly like mine because of a small hole in the waste gate actuator tubing from vibration on the housing bracket by the tube. Was replaced and rerouted by dealer tech.

6 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/29/2010

2005 Jeep Liberty crd pre- heater was leaking and started a fire on the connector. Order new parts to replace heater and they have re-designed it. This is Dodge admitting to a problem.

7 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

Jeep Liberty crd. Engine was stalling on startup. Odb code came on after a month of this "fuel leak severe". It was loosing prime while sitting due to air leaking in. Found fuel leak on pre-heater connector to fuel water separator housing. Found some burnt plastic where connector was, clearly it got hot/fire. I found numerous incidents of this on-line. Considering there were reportedly less then 10,000 of these built, this is a serious issue.

8 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

On a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4 every time gas is pumped into the tank (from several different filling stations) gas over flows spilling over vehicle and over the ground posing a health and environmental risk. I have read where this is a common problem among Chrysler vehicles with no support from the company.

9 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty crd diesel. I bought it used about six months ago at 56,000 mi. From a private owner. It now has 86,000 mi. I began having problems starting a week ago. The car starts and runs for 30 seconds and stalls. Then you cannot restart it. The starter spins the engine but it wont start. If you open the hood and pump the hand pump on the side of the fuel filter, which is mounted on the left fire wall, the car will eventually start and run. Yesterday, as I was pumping the fuel filter hand pump I noticed a drop of fuel come from the connector for the fuel heater on the spin on filter head. When I tried to start it, it started right up as it had before when I pumped the hand pump. As I walked around to shut the hood I could see the fuel dribbling out between the wires of the fuel heater plug on the head of the spin on filter. Halfway home I noticed a strong smell of diesel fuel, opened the hood and saw that the leak was getting worse because the plug was soaked in fuel and running thru the heater plug down the firewall. The dealer (tyson motors of joliet IL) denies that there is any problem and said I will have to pay for the repair. I have gone to web sites and there are scores of people with the same dangerous condition with their vehicle. Many have caught on fire. So far I am told there is no recall. I guess there are not enough people dead yet.

10 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/13/2009

2005 Jeep Liberty shorted out fuel heater caused a fire on the fuel and water separator which melted onto the wiring harness below causing the Jeep to stall immediately and filling the driver compartment with smoke. Could of caused a severe accident. Replacement parts are hard to find due to this seems to be a real problem with this vehicle.

11 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

Slow start was noted prior to incident (most likely due to air in the system). Jeep Liberty crd went into limp mode on highway causing vehicle to slow below 40 mph. Fuel/water separator was leaking fuel from pre-heater plug, which shorted out heater plug. Heater plug was scorched on the inside, no fire noted. Parts on order (approx cost $120 for part) intend to replace fuel/water separator assembly and heater plug wiring when it arrives. Old part will be available.

12 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

Uncontrolled acceleration 2006 Jeep Liberty crd. While stopped at a red light, engine idling, foot on the brake, my engine started to wildly accelerate. I held the brake as hard as I could and the rear wheels started spinning and burning runner and the entire car was 'jumping'. After a few seconds of this I put it into neutral and turned off the engine. When I restarted it moments later it was fine. I brought it to my Jeep dealer in mt kisco NY but they couldn't ind anything wrong. It hasn't done it again. There was nothing jamming the gas pedal. The car was at a stop and idling with my foot on the brake when the engine suddenly started racing on it's own.

13 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/30/2008

Normal operation fuel leaking through electrical connection to diesel fuel heater. Replaced factory filter head assembly with racor 245r.

14 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

Numerous mechanical problems all dash lights come on at once between 15 - 50 mph dealer replaced body control module lights still come on now has more problems after repair by dealer. Several recalls on this leased vehicle running up miles back 2 dealer rear window fall down repaired motor tried 2 quit 3 times could be dangerous in traffic seems it loses prime on fuel system . Also excessive tire wear on front tires had it aligned myself was out from factory 10 deg. I have no confidence in dealer 2 fix since I have more problems after last visit. Horn doesn't sound on key pad door lock and fog lights stay on at highbeam after electrical work. Vehicle has locked me out when I shut doors 4 no apparent reason switch keys in ignition and motor running.

16 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/08/2008

2006 Jeep Liberty crd fuel filter separator heater element evidence of pending failure and leak and fire hazard; browning of plug contact and air in system due to some sort of slow leak. This makes element overheat in aforementioned air - as it was designed to be submerged in fuel - and will melt thermoplastic plug element fitting, causing leak, which will dribble onto hot areas below - if gases not ignited by heating element first in air/fuel space created by air leak - and potentially cause fire and death.

17 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

My rear tail lights and stop lights bulbs keep burniging out. The rear passenger housing has been replaced free by the dealer. Since then I have had to replace the same housing in less than two years. The rear tail lamp and brake lamp bulbs do not burn the filament the light bulbs actually explode inside the housing or melt the housing. The plugs that hold the bulbs are scorched. I have both the rear lamp and plugs to show the defect. I am not the isolated case: most Liberty owners and some grand cherokee owners have had the same problems. My second complaint is a fuel leak at the connection of the fuel heating element. The filter head where the fuel filter is attached also has a heating elemnt. . The electic plug connection at the head leaked fuel onto the connection. I observed when the ignition was tuned on, the fuel leaked and vaporize as it was being shorted and heated. I disconnected the electric plug. , filled the female receptacle with fuel tank epoxy and rubber plug for good measure. Will be replacing scorched connection and filter head as soon as possible. I will keep all defective parts for your inspecton upon your request thank you.

18 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

I, like many others, have a 2005 Jeep Liberty crd diesel. My fuel filter head is leaking fuel from the heater connector which could easily result in a fire. My connector is soaked in diesel fuel. Chrysler needs to be aware of this amd offer some course of action before someone gets hurt or killed.

19 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

2006 Jeep Liberty diesel with 14,500 miles. Engine dies 10-15 seconds after start. Fuel system must be primed with pump on fuel filter head in order to restart engine. Fuel is seeping from the fuel heater electrical connector located on the filter assembly. Dealer replaced fuel filter assembly as a warranty repair.

20 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/14/2007

Our Jeep Liberty diesel as been running terribly lately, and then stalled and would not start. After looking further into the cause,I found that the fuel filter head had a fuel leak at the electrical connection for the fuel heater. It appears that the heater is over heating and melting the non-metallic filter head where the connector penetrates and seals. The connector that plugs into the filter head is black around one of the pins. I have left the heater unplugged, and for now have sealed the leak with a fuel tank epoxy patch.

21 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/24/2007

Car would start and die off after 1-2 minutes ( as in lack of fuel). There had also been electronic throttle control warning light flashing occasionally. To re-start, the fuel primer (located on filter head) had to be pumped. I read on www. Lostkjs. Com forum in the crd section that air might leak into the filter head, causing these symptoms. I noticed that the fuel heater plug located in the filter head was moist. I pulled the plug and heard a air-sucking sound. The plug contained a male part of what is obviously a burned-out fuel heater, which has made a hole into the filter head. . Read more...

22 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/21/2007

Fuel was observed leaking through an electrical fitting on the water separating fuel filter. I have heard this is a common issue with the 05/06 Jeep Liberty crd.

23 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty. While driving between 50- 65 mph, the vehicle hesitated without warning. The contact smelled fuel inside the passenger compartment twice. The dealer inspected the vehicle and found no failures. The failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 38,792.

24 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

Diesel fuel leaked out from around the electrical pins of the fuel heater. The failure was noticed as wetness around the connector during a routine changing of the fuel filter. Disconnecting the heater connector from the fuel filter head allowed several drops of fuel to escape. The fuel filter head was replaced by the dealer under the vehicle warranty and is not available.

25 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/25/2007

2005 Jeep Liberty crd diesel engine started running sporadically. Smell of burning plastic and diesel was present inside vehicle. Pulled over and opened hood, to find boiling diesel steam coming from heater electrical port on fuel head. Plug was discolored with heat. Drove home, ordered new fuel head and replaced with new oem part. 2 months later, the engine started stumbling while driving on the highway and died on highway. Coasted to side of road, managed to eventually restart, and made it home. Opened hood and found leaking fuel head, from heater socket, diesel fuel draining from plug port at rate of about an oz per minute. Electrical plug was burned up, pins electrical pin on inside of fuel heater port destroyed.

26 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/22/2007

2005 Jeep crd, fuel heater possible fire hazard. Design allows fuel filter head to melt then air enters the diesel system. Engine may stall on highway dangerous thing! mines stalled out and been towed couple times. Chrysler has been poor in fixing this problem. If fuel heater was to catch fire filter head and all fuel could burn to crisp in minutes. Maybe make chrylser offer lifetime warranty on these rare diesels. I can see huge lawsuits towards Chrysler if someone was to be killed stalling and or burning in vehicle.

27 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/01/2007

Air leak in fuel system. Requires regular purging. Could lead to an unsafe breakdown.

28 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/13/2007

The heater connector on the fuel filter housing has developed a significant fuel leak. This issue caused the vehicle to stop running at a traffic light in heavy traffic. I had to call for a tow. The tow truck guy hopped into the vehicle and turned the key to put in neutral so that he could load the vehicle. He left the key on and within a minute smoke was rolling out from under the hood. I thought the thing was going to catch on fire. I had no fire extinguisher (why would you need one for a new vehicle?). I jumped in the vehicle, turned off the key, popped the hood, and pulled the heater plug off (which was where all the smoke was coming from). Obviously, fuel leaking on electrical connectors (especially an electrical fuel heater component), doesn't make for a safe mix. This issue has already been reported to the NHTSA and has also been reported on various Jeep forums. This issue is a safety issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

29 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

While doing routine maintenance under the hood of the vehicle I noticed diesel fuel leaking out of the fuel heater connector located in the fuel filter housing. I pulled the connector off and found it partially damaged by excess heat at the connector terminal and wet with fuel. I left the connector disconnected from the housing until I had the dealer replace the filter housing assembly under warranty. The burned/damaged connector was not replaced by the dealership when the housing was replaced. I don't have the old housing, but I could take a picture of the damaged connector/terminal that was still on the vehicle. Also, I noticed that there was excess air in the filter housing before the replacement of the housing. After the housing was replaced there was still excess air, but not nearly as much as before. While the connector was off, and I was waiting for the replacement part the vehicle would not start 2 separate times because air was entering through the connector. I had to pump the primer that was installed on the filter housing to get the vehicle started both times.

30 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/07/2007

After purchasing my diesel Jeep I noticed a shuddering in the transmission at about 55-65 miles an hour. Considerably worse with you decelerate after acceleration. In a construction hold on traffic my vehicle idled for about 10 minutes. When I was cleared to move forward I put the gear selector in drive. The Jeep stalled. It took me a several attempts to restart the motor. I have done extensive research and have come up with one answer. Air is in the fuel. I have taken it to a Jeep dealer in ozark alabama and in dothan alabama. Chrysler tells them that the air in my fuel system is ok. I demand to know what is a safe level of air allowed in the fuel system. No one has measured the amount of air in the fuel system. Please tell me so I can have it measured because I have volumes. I am afraid it will stall out on me again. I have had a few close calls when the Jeep hesitated and choked after a long light and a train crossing,.

31 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

My wife contacted me this morning complaining the Jeep wouldn't start. I walked to where she was and checked out the engine. I noticed fuel around the fuel filter mount; I bled the fuel system and the vehicle started. I got it home and check a little further and noticed fuel leaking out of the fuel heater plug. I unplugged it and a small amount of fuel dumped out. I took it to the local dealer and had them order the part. The technician said it's ok to drive the Jeep until next week when the part arrives. Email update (6/25/2007): ". . . My replacement heater is overheating and leaking again. ".

Fuel filter head on my diesel engine Jeep Liberty crd developed a leak. Fuel leaked out through the fuel heater electrical connections creating a potential fire hazard. The vehicle was returned to the dealer and repaired under warranty.

34 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/16/2006

2005 Jeep Liberty crv diesel check engine light stayed on. Dealer replaced egr valve twice (under warranty). Problem was not resolved until the third trip to the dealer. They replaced the block that the egr valve mounted to and this finally resolved the problem. I now have 28,000 miles on the vehicle and no problems. The dealer was very good and persistent in finding the problem.
