37 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

I bought a 2006 Jeep Liberty limited on 8-20-09 in excellent condition with approximately 50,000 miles. Before I even drove the car off the dealerships lot, the rear driver's-side window/window regulator failed rendering the window inoperable. Dealership did not have part and had to seal in up position so as not to fall, while part is being ordered. Upon extensive research on the internet on various highly respected car review/rating sites, I have learned that the 2006 Jeep Liberty has a known defect in quality of window regulator design and material used which causes windows to drop into doors or cease operating routinely on average of every 2-3 months. Yesterday while driving, my rear passenger window dropped while I was driving 65 mph on a major highway in traffic. I was subsequently startled to the point I swerved, and narrowly missed hitting another car which would have caused a multiple car collision on a major interstate. I have since taped my window in the "up" position until I can resolve this issue with dealer. Dealership has informed me that they will only cover this first replacement/repair, and that I will be responsible for future window regulator repairs of $500. 00 each. This is absolutely unacceptable. A company/dealership should stand 100% behind their product and should certainly address potential safety issues resulting from something as critical as this. The known window regulator failure could cause accidents, bodily injury, theft/vandalism issues, and depreciation and degradation of vehicle interior due to weather damage. I will be filing complaints with state attorney general and car manufacturer/corporate headquarters. A safety recall should immediately be issued, and these window regulators should be redesigned with something other than plastic that has proven to repeatedly fail. While certainly an inconvenience of time, and a financial drain and stress to consumer, this is most assuredly a very serious danger to occupants & other drivers.

38 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/27/2009

June 27th while my wife and I were riding down rte 18 Saturday afternoon in our 2002 Jeep Liberty the hood came unlatched for no reason. We have been riding around for a long time with no problem. Then out of the blue all of a sudden this happens. We took it to meinke to see if they could get it latched till Monday June , 29th when we were schedule to take it took the body shop for repair. They did get it latched but said don't drive itgo anywhere unless you have to. Make sure you have your 4 ways on and only go no more than 35 mph. One of the tech's who works at meineke as well as the person at the repair shop said both the security latch, and the main latch should not have given way as well as the rep from geico saying the same thing, also the mechanic working on the Jeep says the same the same thing both the security latch and the main latch should have held. I have three people saying the same thing, I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. I spoke to daimler Chrysler Jeep explaining to them the situation and I wasn't happy explaining I have to put out $500. 00 of my pocket because of this accident, which we feel was not an accident. We feel it is a safety issue and we should be reimbursed by daimler Chrysler for the deductible we paid had to pour out of our pocket. This is clearly a safety issue with the Jeep and it does not matter if our warranty expired in December 2008. It should have never happened under warranty or not under warranty. Being a safety issue all 2002 models should be recalled and fixed so this does not happen to anyone else as well as reimbursing us for the money we had to pay to fix the problem ourselves.

40 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/11/2009

Locks continuously unlocked and locked, which drained the battery. Car would not start or even turn over. Remote keyless entry did not work. (identical to the 2004 recall).

41 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/06/2009

The regulator motor of the rear driver side window malfunctioned and the window slid down the track. Consequential damage of this defect caused the door latch to brake, making the door inoperable. The consequence is a safety hazard if an accident or rollover required the passenger to exit the automobile. The failure of regulator electric window motors is commonplace on Chrysler products, whereas, these occurrences are all over the internet. The dealer fixed the problem at a cost of $600. The vehicle was out of Chrysler warranty, and the extended warranty insurance carrier would only cover the motor. They did not cover the broken door latch, or the window glass. After several conversations with Chrysler, they admitted to having a running change in the engineering of the electric window assembly, and you cannot buy the regulator motor separately. You must buy the glass window and the entire assembly together. I believe the history of this failure warrants a recall by the manufacturer for safety concerns with the door latch breaking as a result of bad engineering.

42 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/11/2009

The window don't work and we have to tape them shut because we can't afford to fix them will this be a recall.

43 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/25/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the keyless entry failed. He was able to lock the doors manually. The dealer replaced a fuse to remedy the failure; however, the keyless entry failed again. Three out of the four doors could not be locked or unlocked with the keyless entry nor by hand. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 04v111000 (latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch). The failure and current mileages were less than 28,000.

44 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/05/2008

While towing our 2002 Jeep Liberty le behind an RV, with key in the first click position, the keys have twice fallen out of the ignition switch and caused the front wheels to lock in an other than straight-ahead position. This means the switch has rotated, on its own, to the off position. In the first instance, in 2004, there was no damage other than some scuffing on the edges of the tires - due to the wheels becoming locked in an angled state. In the second instance, in 2008, there was approximately $2,300. 00 damage to the right front of the Jeep. Chrysler has been contacted, twice in 2008, but stated that the problem was caused by the tire manufacturer, rather than by the wheels locking. I will be sending the two letters which I sent to Chrysler, along with a cover letter to your office, with photos showing the damage to the Jeep Liberty. You may decide whether the wheels locked or the 3 tires just destroyed themselves. Naturally, Chrysler corporation has only contacted me by phone, so there is no paper trail, save my few notes when speaking with some person I can barely understand. Thank you for your time! updated 02/19/10 updated 10/04/10.

45 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

The driver side rear window failed and the window and the unlocking mechanism will not operate. When this failure occurs, the window will not raise and the door will not unlock. The replacement parts are the same as the original parts. The rear sided window and locking mechinism (regulator) has failed. The dealership told us that this is a known problem (defect) with these Jeep liberties. It is just a matter of time until they fail again. These rear windows are not used very often, so we do not know when the next failure will occur. We have one year left on the extended warranty, but if an improved part is not used for the repairs, it will fail again.

46 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/30/2008

Our 2003 Jeep Liberty has a defect that has a TSB on it. It was supposed to have been repaired by a dealer in may 2004. In chryslers notification to customers, they claim that the rear flip up window may open if water gets into the switch, only if vehicle is un-locked. That un-locked statement is false and we have had it happen 2 or 3 times with vehicle locked. This is a safety issue as it would allow a person to enter the vehicle through the rear lift glass, unknown to the operator and would expose the operator to theft and assault. Chrysler outright lied about the unlocked condition as the lock is powered at all times and only needs to be grounded to operate.
