1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2023

Water leaks in through the sunroof and top racks and leaks out the dome lights inside of the car.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Brief summary: I purchased the 2008 Patriot in 2014 with 70k miles. First occurance of vehicle stalling and shutting off occured in 2015 with 80k miles; when the throttle body light/ esp began flashing and sputtered a few seconds before it shut off while in motion. The vehicle restarted with in 10 minutes. I had the throttle body and gasket repaired. Since then there has been other random occasions of stalling where the throttle light/ esp and engine light flashes precedding a stall. Now 2018-19 (107k miles) I went in for diagnosis because my car stalled agin this time was in busy traffic and throttle light, esp lights, engine light came on before the engine shut off. I have been advised that there is a crankshaft issue that causes the engine light to come on and stall the vehicle intermittently. I had crankshaft replaced the spark plugs changed, the throttle body cleaned and the electical harnesses serviced to yet have the same issue occur when the vehicle stalled 24 hrs after repairs. The engine, throttlebody and esp lights came on again with in 24 hours before shutting off in the middle of a busy intersection of traffic. I am now having a 3rd independent mechanic look into the issue and see if there is anything else that could be causing the intermittent stalling. I spoke with Jeep customer care and they stated that my particular VIN doesn't have a recall although other Patriots of the same class have had same occurence and recall yet there is nothing that they can do for me in this case to address the safety issue or repairs since I am out of warranty. I strongly reccommend that the dot investigate this matter and require Jeep to either recall the vehicle or require Jeep to repair these vehicles to safe performance on the roads and/or refund me the purchase price as I am still in contract paying for a non functional risky vehicle.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

Ecm / pcm issues. Mechanic at pep boys told me there was a recall on this. But the dealership is telling me no, there is not.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2018

My vehicle will sometimes not go when I press the gas. The brakes don't properly work, the 4 wheel drive lock fails, the esp light flashes, the traction control fails, and it makes it difficult to drive over 5 miles an hour. I have yet to be in an accident, but I fear it may happen. It happens immediately after starting to drive, and doesn't always correct itself. I contacted Jeep and they told me I'm on my own. It is a known issue with these vehicles and wonder why they haven't recalled them to fix the problem. I fear I'm stuck with a lemon vehicle, because the transmission has already been replaced and I've only been in possession of the vehicle for 10 months. What are my options moving forward?.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2018

Tipm needs replaced. Right signal light didn't work properly, ac doesn't blow cold air. I had the ac checked, it's fine. It's the tipm. And the air bag light is on constant. The system is shut off. All this b/c of the tipm. It started to act up while in motion.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2018

After filling my tank, everytime I leave the gas station the engine sputters and will stall. Luckily I'm able to sometimes get over on to the side of the road before being in an accident. This is very dangerous. During the winter months when it is cold outside, I am only able to put in a few cents at a time. It can take over 20 minutes to slowly fill up the gas tank. Max it will fill is a few cents at a time before you have to release the handle and then press it ever so lightly to fill up the next part. The engine will often sputter as it feels like it is going to quit running as I'm driving down the highway or interstate similar to what happens after you fill up your tank. The va the only time the Jeep is stationary is when I'm filling it up or after it dies after a fuel philip. The vehicle is always in motion either in the city highway city road when it kills after filling up. When it sputters and pills after filling up you are unable to use your wheel as it locks up, very dangerous. My life and my family's life is at risk.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2018

Tipm problems causing problems with wipers, blinkers. Sometimes can't turn wipers on or off. Passenger side blinkers fast blink. Changed all bulbs but didn't fix. When lights are turned on passenger blinkers fail to work.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

Takada recall vehicle shutting down while in reverse while dropping my daughter off. All dash lights were on and radio still playing. Next day, car shut off in drive while sitting at a busy intersection. Both times place vehicle in park and restarted. Very unsafe with children.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

The vehicle has serious electrical issues which stem mainly from corroding wires. I've had it at 3 different mechanics, & 2 different dealerships all for them to tell me either they have no idea what is wrong with it or that they can just start replacing wires & hope for the best basically even though it isn't worth putting the money into at this point. The electrical has effected my batterie (I've had to replace 3 batteries in the last 2 years), at this point I have to have it on a battery charger 24/7 when it isn't running because the it just drains my battery & won't start, 4wd sometimes it works but sometimes it doesnt, air conditioning, entire computer system (when I'd shut the vehicle off & pull the key out, it'd still be running until it finally choked itself out). I've $3,000 into the new computer, $1,000 into corroding wires, & number new batteries as well. At this point it's a lost cause. Every machenic I've spoke with states that these electrical problems are extremely common with Jeep Patriot, compas, & commanders. They recommend for people not to purchase them.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2016

Rear differential failed. The entire differential was replaced by Jeep through unlimited powertrain warranty. Problem solved. -the frame and body begun to rust. The problem started to appear when the car was less than 5 years old. The problem was brought up to Jeep. Jeep declined to fix or address the problem. -engine stalls every 11 seconds. Faulty code shows: p2107: throttle actuator control module processor. The throttle module was replaced twice. Problem persists. The engine completely shuts down while driving. Very unsafe due to loss of steering. Currently, the car is not driveable - problem not fixed. Request research help.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

My mother owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. I was driving her car on the highway at 60mph. Apparently, the car wanted to stall while driving at high speed. Due to an accident on the highway, I was able to reduced the speed safely. When I went to change lanes to the right, the signal spark and/or caused the interior lights to go on. The a/c cannot be on while driving either. There seems to be an electrical short that is causing all of these problems to happen all at once. I'm afraid to have my mother continue to drive the car. She only drives on local streets, but this too can cause an accident. I took her car 2 years ago to a Jeep dealer to repair an electrical short on the hatch door due to it getting wet. The dealer replaced the rubber moldings around the hatch door, but it has returned. And again they were not able to find the problem. All of theses problems keep persisting and she is afraid to drive.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2016

Summary: while driving my car will still in the engine dies the car lots of iowa city it doesn't matter where you're going after you put gas in the car he usually doesn't start but now it has started not letting you fill up with gas at stopping the fuel pump like your tank is full and it didn't put any gas in it but it's very dangerous and scary when you're driving down the road and your engine shuts off in the car stalls and locks up. The traction control will come on and it's an able to be turned off after it locks up and stalls and shuts off while you're driving it any speed it doesn't restart request research help very scary it's going to lead to something horrible happening this problem cannot get fixed.

The car cuys in an out almost limeit going to shut off. Then the check engine light will come on an flash an ding . Shortly after while drivi g the esp comes on cuts out lime goi g to die then engine dies driving or parked.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. Each time the vehicle was filled with fuel, the vehicle would stall without warning while driving at any speed. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician replaced the spark plug and suspected a sensor failure in the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2015

The vehicle was in motion when suddenly all the lights on the dash light up, the dials went crazy, the car bucked like it was stalling and then the engine cut off. I had the vehicle examined by a professional auto mechanic and he informed me that it was most likely the total integration power module which is common in most Jeeps/chryslers and have had a number of issues in recent years. It is an expensive repair to replace the entire tipm, but not doing so means driving the car is unreliable and incredibly dangerous, especially to other drivers who may not expect the car in front of them to suddenly stop.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. While driving at a low speed, immediately after refueling, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. In addition, the cruise control lever was activated but failed to function and the doors failed to lock and unlock electronically. The failures recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the instrument cluster needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed for the stalling failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 92,000.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

I had just filled the tank as usual and drove about 500 yards to a red light. In the past after a fill up, the Jeep would stall and "buck" around 30 mph, as if it couldn't get into gear, even though this is a cvt. I thought this might happen again, but it didn't this time, which was curious. At the light, upon attempting to accelerate there was no response from the throttle, and the car remained in drive, but refused to move. I could not shift out of gear into neutral. A red light in the upper left corner of the dash came on and began to beep, and the entire dashboard lit up, with every light coming on and making noise. Eventually, I lost all power and waited more than an hour for a tow truck in the middle of a three lane avenue. The mechanic told me a relay was entirely blown and blackened, and this had killed the battery. This was replaced at no cost to me, but he said they could not find what had caused the relay to blow. Essentially, what occurred was a symptom, not the cause, and would happen again. The car is currently sitting, deemed unsafe to drive. I also had lower ball joints replaced at 55,000 miles, which is far too early. I love Jeep, but I hate the 2007-2010 Patriots. Bad buy.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2015

I purchased my 2008 Jeep Patriot in summer 2010. In spring 2011 (when it actually rains in texas) I noticed a puddle of water inside the floorboard of my car. I ignored it, but the next time it rained and I was in my car I learned how the mysterious puddle of water got into my car, through the dome light that was full of water. I took it to a mechanic and they could not figure out how the water got in. When I tried explaining to them my witness of the water leaking through the dome light, they could not find a leak anywhere. Since then, I have had multiple leaks in my car coming from the light inside my car and the piece to the left side of the windshield. Anytime I try to explain it to a Jeep dealership/take it to a mechanic to look at it, they "can't find a problem". Honestly, after spending hundreds of dollars for people to tell me they cannot find anything I have given up. Over time, lights in the buttons of my radio have burned out, lights in my ac have burned out, but today I am letting my voice be heard. . . We had a downpour last Thursday in north texas and I turned my car on Friday to once again the dome light leaking water (not a shocker for me anymore because unfortunately this is the norm) and my radio completely burned out. I cannot turn it on, see the time, nothing. It's gone. I called the Jeep dealership Friday morning and he mentioned he just got off the phone with 2 others who are having the exact same issues with their Jeeps. It's now Monday and it has rained all night. I got into my Jeep this morning to go to work and my car wont even turn on now. It was working fine yesterday before the rain and now I am pretty sure it has completely shorted my cars electrical out. This needs to be recalled and fixed. There is no reason I should be paying hundreds of dollars for someone to tell me there is not a problem when there clearly is.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2014

Bought a used Jeep Patriot 2008. My Jeep is garage kept, but when I am at work, and it rains, the sunroof leaks. I did some research online and I see that is a common problem. Just wanted my vehicle added to let them know my sunroof leaks.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the warning lights on the instrument panel started to flash, the brakes engaged independently and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. Pam.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

1. My daughter took her car in because it would not start and the mechanic told her the transmission was going. He finally got it started and she limped it home. July 22nd 2. My daughter was driving to work one week later and her car lost power and shut down on the highway, I called aaa and had it towed to dealer. August 2nd. He kept it for a week testing for issues. 3. I drove the car to work and when I tried to go home it would not start. I towed it to a Jeep dealer who figured out the problem and charged me $390. 00 to fix it. August 15.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

The clockspring failed. The failure causes my airbag light to intermittently come on when the vehicle turns direction and/or accelerates from a dead-stop to cruising speed. The part number is 05156106ad. The cutter Dodge/Jeep dealership in pearl city, hawaii informed me that the part was not covered under extended warranty, nor under manufacturer recall despite [Jeep] having received a substantial number of complaints, so cutter wanted $600 for parts and service. The part is also used in the compass, wranger, and liberty models for the same production-year.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

Over the past year my Jeep has been very sluggish, accelerates at higher rpm's than normal, "shifts" rough ( even though it is a cvt and doesn't have gears). For example, when I slow down to make a turn and then proceed to accelerate after the turn, my Jeep hesitates to accelerate, the rpm's plummet and then reach to over 3000 rpm's before it slams/jerks into gear to return to around 2000 rpm's. Twice my Jeep has shuttered and stalled while at red lights. Last week after backing out of my driveway, as soon as I put it in drive the electronic throttle control light started flashing and dinging at me. My Jeep went into "limp mode" and I was not able to travel 8 feet from my driveway. I pulled to the side of the road and attempted to restart my Jeep 3 times, and every time I had the same "limp mode"/electronic throttle control issue. The check engine light did not come on at all. The manual states that "if the light is flashing when the engine is running you may experience power loss, an elevated/rough idle, and increased brake pedal effort, and your vehicle may require towing. Immediate service is required. ". This does not sound safe. I had it taken to a certified auto mechanic who said it was a throttle body issue and that I would need to have it replaced. However, Chrysler/Jeep has 1,500-2,000 throttle bodies on back order and I was told it would take several months to even receive the part. I'm glad that my Jeep did not stall or go into "limp mode" while traveling on the highway as this could cause a fatal accident. I consider myself lucky, even though I am now making car payments on a vehicle that will not run. This is also my only vehicle. There must be a major issue with the throttle body to have 1,500-2,000 on back order and should be looked into.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2014

The car was in drive, however the gas pedal was not accelerating the car. It jerked several times and felt like it was going to stall then the electronic throttle light came on for a short time then went out- I took it to my mechanic he confirmed the car needed the throttle body however there are none on long island there are more then 450 on backorder coming from overseas!!!! it has happened intermittently for the past week and I cannot get it fixed. I am afraid the it is dangerous. Apparently if I am not able to find this part on long island this may be an issue that Jeep Chrysler should be addressing. There are only 60k miles on this car.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

For the past two years any time it rains or snows when I get in my Jeep the first time the break is touch water pours from the dome light like a waterfall stream it is staining the interior it is trashing the car I cannot get it to stop what is the worst thing.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

I was leaving work and the car started just fine but then as I was starting to drive it stalled out. It started back up just fine and then did the same thing. This went on several times. And when it stalls out, my power steering is gone and it is hard to get it to a safe stop. I am worried if I take it out on the road it will stall out and cause an accident. I have read several reviews of this problem with recalls on the 2009 model but not the 2008.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2013

This issue may have started way earlier, since the Patriot electrical system on the dash board would sometimes come on and then go off intermittenly. I reported it during the first year, 2008 and a few times during 2009 and 2010. I had not have this problem again until earlier this year. Checks by dealership came back, "nothing is wrong". That's it!! this year the problem got worst, intermittently, my headlights, turn signal, wipers would not work. Hazard lights will not work. One day it rained and I realized the wipers did not work, I had to pull over for safety. This is a serious safety issue. The dealership spend all day trying to figure out what was wrong, unplug the computer, rebooted and then everything worked. Five hours later, the same problem happened again. I got charge 100 dollars for that, now I had to pay total of 317 dollars before tax for the parts and labor to put in WI fi body module. This equipment should be recalled, this is a serious safety issue. Also, I had to replace the ball bearing and arm three times!! this is ridiculous. I do not go off road, I don't go over pot holes.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2010

My 2008 Jeep Patriot has been in the shop a collective 18 times over 87 days. It is currently still in the shop since last week. I have had it in 9 times for the sunroof leaking and 7 times to replace electrical items that shorted out because of the leaking sunroof. It first started to have this problem after 3 months 8/2008 and 2700 miles. I am tried of the dealership asking to give them one more try for the last year and a half. They keep blowing me off. As of 1/29/10 it back in the shop again for a leaking sunroof. I talked to the service manager at the dealership and he stated that they have tried and replaced everything in the sunroof assembly and it still leaks and is ruining my electrical system, my leather seats and carpeting. I do not want this vehicle to have and electrical fire down the road with all the issues it is continuing to have. Please help!.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2009

Sentry key receiver failed in steering column. There is no way to start engine when component fails, vehicle had to be towed for repair. Full repair and tow covered by warranty, however this runs out at 36k miles. After that consumer would be responsible for tow costs and replacement of faulty part, which is not a component subject to wear and tear of use.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot, my Jeep started leaking from the map light, dome light and cargo light the water ran into my a/c unit and my cd changer, gear shift, glove compartment and all over my carpet and seats, in sept. Of 2009 after a heavy rain we were in a drought until then. I got the car back and the dealership said the leak was fixed, they said they had to connect the drain tubes. Once I got my car back I noticed after another rain I had water standing in my tire well once again, after the last leak my car started stalling on take off. I was entering onto a very busy street and it stalled as I was pulling out and almost got hit by a dump truck. I once again took the Jeep back to the dealer to have it fixed, they replaced the sun roof seal and the seals around the hatched, they said it was fixed. After another rain I noticed my Jeep is leaking again, when I turned on the a/c water started coming out of the defrost vent and my carpet was wet, and a strong smell of mold coming out my vents with the air. I took it back into the dealership and told them about the leak, and the water and smell of mold coming out of my a/c vents. I looked over the car with the service manager and we noticed black mold growing in the head liner she also was able to smell the mold coming out of my a/c unit. I also noticed that my car was cutting out again while driving. I am very concerned about a fire or some other major electrical part going out due to the water leaks that have occured. I am also worried about safety issues concerning the car stalling; and am worried it is going to cause an accident or health issues due to the black mold.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2009

Please see odi #'s 10262168 and 10268295 for history. This has been an ongoing issue for approximately 5000 miles / 4 months. Vehicle intermittently stalls at various speeds, no mil or codes being stored. Vehicle complaint mirrors issue listed below NHTSA campaign id number: 07v291000 NHTSA action number: pe07027 scheduled appointment for issue again approximately 1 month ago, at time of drop off vehicle was running fine. I was instructed by the service writer to try a higher quality of fuel such as chevron or shell, I had been using costco. After the 3rd fill-up of chevron fuel the vehicle began stalling again. I informed the dealer that I want to leave the vehicle for a few days to allow a tech to drive home in hopes that they witness the issue. While traveling on 07/05/09 I attempted to pass a slower vehicle on a 2 lane road, approximately 1/2 to 3/4 through passing the slower vehicle my vehicle began to stutter/stall, I had to slow abruptly and pull back into the lane behind the slower vehicle in order to avoid a head on collision with oncoming traffic. My wife refuses to drive the vehicle due to the threat of an accident. If the dealer is unable to diagnose and repair the issue on this attempt I will have to start a lemon law claim.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

Water leaks through dome lights, shorting out electrical system.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

Most of the lights on the dashboard lit up upon starting one day. Car seemed to run fine, though. Problem did not go away over 24-hrs so booked appt. With dealer repair shop. Took the dealer more than 1 week to determine the problem. Then took another week+ to repair and get the part in. They determined it was the abs module and replaced it. Seems okay now. Car was only few months old and it was inconvenient for me to arrange transportation to work while it was in the shop.
