Engine stalls only after filling up gas, resulting in check engine light or oil light turning on. I have taken it to numerous mechanics, who have all given me different answers, with anywhere from issues with evap hoses and fuel tank, to the fuel pump, or purge system. Problem was never addressed or mentioned when bought from dealership in June 2025 but noticed immediately after filling up gas for the first time since purchase of the car and problem occurs continuously after filling up gas. Not sure if related either, but if gas tank is overfilled at all in the slightest, it leaks out the bottom immediately.
After refueling the vehicle at a gas station, I drive about a 1/4 of a mile and the engine will stall and die. It will immediately restart and when I step on the gas pedal the engine has no power and will stall again. I will start it a third time and then it will run ok until I need to fill-up again. I think this is a safety hazard because I stand a good chance of getting rear ended being stuck in traffic. I have read many articles about people having the same problem. Seems the fix is replacing the gas tank which costs about $1500. 00. Please make the responsible party face this serious safety issue.
Faulty gas tank. Doesn’t fill and gas shoots out during the fill process.
Car shuts off after fueling. Is a common problem with other Jeep owners found on google. My mechanic actually found the articles. Apparently it is a rollover valve issue. Like others have suggested, not to fill the fuel tank full unless you want to pay over $1000 for a new gas tank. I don't want to drive in fear this car is going to keep shutting off. Why hasn't this been fixed when so many others have had the same issue?.
After fueling the vehicle completely, the engine stalls multiple times while in motion. This happens for a few miles and re-starts before running normal again. When the engine stalls, the vehicle cannot accelerate and power-steering is not operable. The vehicle's engine has stalled when entering a highway and turning with cross-traffic. I fear myself and passengers will be struck by a moving vehicle with no control of the subject vehicle. A local mechanic stated the entire gas tank needs replaced but cannot confirm it will correct the defect. There is no warning when the engine stalls. This is my second complaint after years of no response. These events are ongoing.
After refueling car stalls when this happens loss of power steering brakes etc dangerous entering busy roads from gas stations been happening consistently, many other owners report same problem across multyears of manufacture.
Jeep stalls and shuts off after fueling.
I have been having a very dangerous issue with my Jeep. It stalls numerous times after I get fuel. It has come to my attention that this is a common issue with Jeep Patriots. It has also come to my attention that there is a recall on the 2012+ models for the issue. I am wondering why there is not a recall on the 2009 model that I have? after extensive research, it appears that this is a ver common problem with the 2007-2009 models as well. This issue is incredibly dangerous, and has nearly caused me to be in an accident numerous times. Being my only mode of transportation, I have no choice but to drive it. Why has Jeep not issued a recall for all years, it clearly affects more than just 2012+ vehicles.
Vehicle stalls after refueling (several times within 5 miles after refueling) before returning to normal. Vehicle stalls initially while idling immediately after refueling and while in motion. Vehicle stalled when pulling into intersection (on a public roadway), causing wheel to lock. This is a safety hazard. This happens with every refuel since the first event.
After refueling, the vehicle acts like it wants to stall and has stalled on some occasions. This is concerning to me because, I have to put the vehicle in park and restart it. I am afraid when this happens that someone behind me in traffic may slam into my Jeep. . I put a recent date below, but it has been ongoing off and on since I bought it last year.
The vehicle habitually will stall while driving. It seems to be related to getting it fueled up. I cannot get any support from the dealer regarding the issue, and it seems to be a common problem when looking on various Jeep Patriot forums.
The engine frequently stalls after refueling, causing a loss of power steering, acceleration or deceleration. This starts after the issue with re-fueling that led to fuel nozzle kicking off at normal re-fueling speed for 4 fill-ups, which doesn't recur any more.
It started out with stumbling idle and stalling after refueling. Which was dangerous as it would do it for up to a mile afterwards when you're trying to get back on the highway. Now my problem is the Jeep will not refuel. You put the nozzle in and it takes a little bit and it kicks off. Pull the nozzle out and reinsert it and it does it again. It will also spit fuel out at you if you are not careful. Now the stalling as mentioned prior happens almost any time while driving.
After refueling my vehicle while pulling away from the pump, it started bucking and stalled completely. I have had the bucking and surging unstable idle after refueling. It seems to be getting worse as time goes on. This problem has been going on right about 6 months.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot fwd. While placing fuel into the vehicle, fuel spewed out. It was diagnosed that the filler neck valve was open and allowed fuel to splash back. Due to the failure, it took approximately twenty minutes to fuel the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 46,141.
