The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at undisclosed speeds, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the subframe was corroded. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and test-driven. The independent mechanic placed the vehicle on the lift and determined that there was a hole in the rear cross body subframe. The contact called the local dealer and was referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vehicle could not be repaired under technical service bulletin: 23-012-14. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact stated that while getting a routine oil change at the dealer the mechanic stated that there was a large hole in the subframe due to excessive rusting. The contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The contact recalled technical service bulletin, NHTSA id 10140027 (suspension, steering) from approximately 5 years ago and inquired if the vehicle could be repaired under the TSB. The contact was informed that the TSB was no longer valid. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the TSB was no longer valid. The approximate failure mileage was 136,560.
