general problems of the 2016 Jeep Renegade - part 1

My car suddenly caught fire while driving on the freeway. I heard a boom, felt my car shake and saw flames out my back window, I pulled over immediately and got out of the car. Going around the passenger side to inspect my tires and car. As in doing this I noticed that the entire car by then underneath was completely consumed in flames. I ran from the car in fear of my safety. My car burned to the ground in front of my eyes. There were no warning lights on my dash, no flashing, no indication of anything wrong.

I purchased a used 2016 Jeep Renegade from a dealership located in chicago, illinois, on October 12, 2025. The seller assured me that the vehicle title was available and promised to mail it to me the day after the purchase, since I live in nebraska and could not return in person to pick it up. It has now been more than three weeks, and the dealership has not delivered the title, now claiming that the auction has not yet provided it. The vehicle is currently in my possession, but I am unable to register or legally use it due to the missing title. The dealership only provided a “bill of sale” as proof of purchase. In addition, the seller offered a 30-day warranty for a transmission issue, which began showing problems again before the warranty expired. However, the dealership refuses to issue any refund, stating that it “does not make returns. ” I believe this situation poses a risk to consumer safety, as the vehicle was sold without a valid title and with a significant mechanical issue that could affect its operation. I request that the dealership be investigated for possible violations of vehicle sales laws and consumer fraud.

My 2016 Jeep Renegade (36k miles) keeps dying suddenly, sometimes when parked and sometimes while driving. My battery and alternator work like they should. No warning signs occur before the car dies. It usually requires a jumpstart before it's able to run again. 1. It's not teh battery because if the battery was bad it would not die while driving as it's running on alternator. 2. It's not the alternator as I tested it by letting the car run and disconnecting the batter while it was running. It continued to run which indicates that the alternator works just fine. I looked up the symptom on the internet and found that many other Jeep reneage owners complained online about the same issue. This is a major safety hazard as all power steering is lost when the car shuts off which could lead to accidents when it occurs while driving.

No oil change light, no engine light. Excessive oil consumption engine metal to metal brakes.

Keyless entry working intermittently. Using 2 original key fobs, doors will lock, unlock, remote start and panic alarm will sound. Then they will not. Both keys respond the same. Either they are both working or they are both not working. Works most of the time, but then the system will stop working and the emergency key will be needed to access the vehicle.

My car has been struggling to speed up and now recently struggling to start. It did show a ads light when trying to start and also something about a vehicle dynamic system.

I'm getting multiple messages displayed saying lights are out when they are not, have had many instances where the language is changed to something else. And the cooling fan stops working intermittently causing over heating and most recent melted wiring harness plugs to and from fan.

Mysky parts commonly break on Jeep Renegades and poise a safety concern that they do not close. During accident or inclement conditions this can endanger passengers and driver.

Vehicle has a recall (u90) . I am unable to renew my vehicle registration without proof of correction certificate. Dealer has refused to service my vehicle for the recall . I have been in contact since March 2023 for this recall. I am told there is a waiting list for the part. I am never contacted again for the service. I have asked to be added to the waiting list and they are stating they are unable to service my vehicle without first ordering the part . They are uncooperative and refusing to service a recall that is required for vehicle registration renewal.

The sunroof on my Jeep opened by itself. There are issues all over the internet with same said problem with the Jeep Renegade mysky sunroof system. Jeep wants people to spend $3,500 to fix. Can count on both hounds how many times I’ve actually opened the sunroof to use it.

Lost use of audio/stereo/radio/apps/rear camera/ usb port/front power outlet/ hands free phone.

In normal weather conditions, not raining or snowing, when making a slow turn across traffic or onto the road from a driveway the vehicle turns on the 'traction control'. The vehicle becomes a immobile and is a hazard from being hit from behind or the side when turning across traffic.

In October 3 different incidents while driving my car went into netural by itself took car back to dealership each time each time it was not resolved the last incident I also was hit by a semi on the freeway with my 11year old child in the car at 5am took car back to dealership they have had my car since oct now being told it's the shifter to me this should be a recall being told by dealership and other mechanics this is an on going issue with this make and model this is huge safety hazard unfortunately this part is on back order so I am out of a vehicle that I am still paying for since oct worst experience and concerned for others and their safety.

I started up my Renegade as usual and when I got to the stop sign at the end of my street, I had a message on the screen telling me to press the break and push the start button. I never turned my car off. No check engine lights before or after this incident.

The traction control light will come on and the engine will lose power while the vehicle is making a turn at normal low-speed turns on dry pavement. This poses a serious safety hazard for drivers because unexpected loss of acceleration in a turn places the driver in danger of being hit from behind and/or at risk of being struck from the side when traction control comes on and the vehicle loses power while the driver is making a turn across traffic. We purchased this vehicle used on June 1, 2022 and have had multiple incidents of this happening, most recently this morning at 6:55 am cst. I have not yet had it looked at by a dealer.

Ongoing recall issue – 2016 Jeep Renegade (recall u90) this recall came out 06/16/2022 when I connect the dealership they keep say its backorder and that they have no eta on. Sometimes I do receive texts about the part being available but when I call, they say no and that it could be scammed when it clearly gives me the dealership info and phone number.

While at an intersection as I was turning left across the side of oncoming traffic my vehicle completely stalled in the middle of the road the gas pedal was stuck and would not accelerate and then a code on my dash appeared service throttle body, after 45 seconds the code went away and the veh was finally able to accelerate so I could move out of the middle of the oncoming traffic side of the road. I then proceeded to go straight until I could find a parking lot to pull into. Right before I was able to pull into the parking lot the Jeep did the same thing again. Would not accelerate, I put on my flashers, the same dash code came back on service throttle body and after 45 seconds the Jeep went back to acting fine. I was finally able to pull into a parking lot and turn off the Jeep.

My 2016 Jeep Renegade is my only vehicle for myself and family. There's an open recall (u90) for a part that must be installed by a certified dealership. However, the necessary part is unavailable and has been back ordered for over one year. There are no dealerships in the entire state which have this part avallable. I've been on a waitlist for this part about a year as well. My car registration is due next month in may, which requires this recall to be repaired prior to registration. I also need a smog test, but the recall involves emissions so my smog test is likely to fail. I have contacted Jeep customer service but the representative has stopped responding completely. I have reached out 3 additional times to this representative assigned to help me but have been ignored.

I have to keep disabling my traction control. I made a left turn onto a small back road and my traction control kicked on and the car accelerated causing me to almost wreck. Now I am having trouble getting the car to start. I practically have to stand on the brake to get it started. And all kinds of alerts pop up from time to time. Low tire pressure, emergency brake, bulbs out. . . . Etc.

I have a problem with the radiator fan!it was fix last yr,was a recall also and now is giving me the engine light showing in the computer is something with the radiator fan!I took it to a place where they deal with Jeep brand and I don’t know why didn’t last longer if they fix it!!I need to know why do I have to pay when it was a recall?tomorrow I have the apt but I will end up paying for this problem when they should of just fix it the 1st time,right?since it was a recall,why do I have to pay?is only been a yr since they did this recall!radiator fan are suppose to last more than a yr,right?.

On more than one occasion, this car has stalled or stopped, leaving me coasting to the side of the road in active traffic. I was going about 30-35 mph. It has had oil consumption problems since 2021 when I purchased it. It was presented to me at point of sale as gas consumption. . . It wasn't getting good mileage and would need a tune up. Also misrepresented as having a spare and it did not. On 4 Aug 2024 I completed the most recent oil consumption test and it failed. Leith Jeep refused to provide me with paperwork and said "no charge. " but it needed another quart of oil which I added. Before the test was completed it needed a quart of oil. I have all records and will attach here if possible or email under separate emails. Not sure how many doc can be attached. I had recall repairs made. My car is part of the class action lawsuit but is unsafe. I am told to correct I need a new engine which will cost me out of pocket $11,000. 00 due to no longer under warranty. But it has had this problem since I bought it and prior, an oil consumption test was done by the dealer in possession then.

After work I got in my Renegade trailhawk and turned it on as usual to go home. Upon starting up the vehicle, warning lights came on telling me the headlights, tail lights, blinkers, daytime lights, tag lights, parking lights and back up lights were not working or out. I got out and inspected them only to see they were in fact all still functioning as should be. I got someone from the dealership to look at the issue and was told it would be alright, but definitely get the service department to look at it in the morning. I am having it inspected today by the service department and hopefully the issue will be resolved.

After work I got in my Renegade trailhawk and turned it on as usual to go home. I got someone from the dealership to look at the issue and was told it would be alright, but definitely get the service department to look at it in the morning. As an update on this particular issue, I took the Renegade to the service department the next morning and after just a few minutes I was informed this would be remedied within less than 15 -20 minutes. Apparently there was a new update to the system that was installed by the awesomely knowledgeable crew at marshall cdjr and I haven’t had any of the same issues since.

The mysky roof on my Jeep broke off and flown off and onto the highway, the latch on the inside broke off into tiny plastic pieces causing the sunroof to fly up and out onto the highway. The vehicle was in motion going 63 mph at the time the event took place, on a highway.

My Jeep is 4 years old and has 55,000 miles. I leased it brand new and have been the only driver. It has never been in an accident and all of a sudden the a/c is hissing and not blowing cold. I have contacted the Jeep dealer and they said they cannot help me since it is out of the 36,000 mile warranty. I had it diagnosed and it supposedly has a leak in the condenser and another hose. . I did not do anything for this to happen. This is not normal taking into account the miles are so low and it has been cared for so well. I believe it is due to faulty manufacturing or parts. Thank you.

The latch to the lift is continuously popping open, so it's killing my battery. It is only happening when it's parked but I haven't tried to drive with it happening.

Car has 60000 miles on it. I went to turn the car on and all service lights popped up (transmission service, check engine and oil change). Went to put car and drive and would not go out of park. I used the shift lock release to get out of gear and once in drive or reverse, car would not move and only engine would rev. After researching, I found many other Jeep Renegades had a computer issue where it needed to be reset. Dealership wont fix unless under warranty.

The guide lines have disappeared on the reverse camera.

My sunroof stopped opening. When you push the button to open it you can hear the motor run and something moving and trying to open. I've used it less than a dozen times since I bought it brand new and it just stopped opening.

After initial start car abruptly shuts off after accelerating a short distance. As to put car back in park restart and then put in gear.

I was on a highway going 65mph and my engine cut off, steering locked up, and I had no control of breaks or anything. I could not get over or even put my hazards on to signal to other drivers I could not stop or get to another lane. When a tow truck arrived he tried a new battery and everything and could not even get the car in neutral to be able to tow it to the side of the road. Had to get special truck there to get the car to safety and a shop. After getting to the shop they said it was an issue with my water pump that caused everything to shut down suddenly.

Sometimes when I start my car the traction control light is on (meaning traction control is off) this has happened twice in the last month. It turns on just fine when I press the button and the light goes away. Until yesterday I was driving I was accelerating at the bottom of a small hill about to reach the bottom of it. (I was going 15-20mph) the light flashed on and of really fast (like strobe light fast) and my car felt like the break was pressed and let go with the light. While I was trying to speed up the car wouldn't. (like if you went break, gas, break, gas ect,) this happened for a couple seconds till I let go of the gas and it stopped. And everything went back to normal. While this was happening I also heard a grinding sound I'm not sure when it came from. This was on a straight city street the car was in automation mode with the 4 wheel drive mode set to automate. After this I went to a authorized dealer/mechanic. I don't remember what he said but he said my car was on a recall and I know for a fact that he is lying because I have checked multiple times 2 recalls for this type of car have been made and none effect my vehicle. (check by VIN number) I can't trust the mechanic to look at the problem.

Cooling fan failure on 2016 Jeep Renegade latitude as reported by other Renegade owners, unfortunately I cannot find my VIN under any recalls on this item.

Navigation issues. Navigation system is improperly calibrated.

The radiator fan malfunctioned then died. The vehicle is only 3 years old with 34,600 miles and weeks outside of the manufacturer's warrantee expiration date. This repair cost me $667. 00. In checking with other owners of the same vehicle in the Jeep Renegade community, this seems to be a widespread problem. However, Jeep has not issued a recall.
