The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart after running an errand. The contact also heard an abnormal noise. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering column prematurely fractured and needed to be replaced. The contact was uncertain of when the recall repair would be completed for several months. The manufacturer was notified. The NHTSA campaign number was unknown. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.
Took my 2006 Jeep Wrangler sport right-hand drive to an independent service garage for routine oil change at approx. 6900 miles. They tested all the lights and found that both main brake lights were not functioning, and not due to bulb failure. The third light, above the spare tire, was working properly. I took it to the dealer under warranty, where they determined the problem was a faulty steering column electrical stalk system assembly. No accident occurred, though such a brake light failure could potentially cause a very serious crash. The dealership replaced the faulty steering column stock assembly under warranty, and the defective part was not saved.
