15 problems related to electronic stability control have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2017

Car shakes violently between 50-55 mph. Front steering stabilizer has been replaced three times, "death wobble" still occurs. Happens on smooth, non-bumpy roads as well as bumpy ones.

2 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2016

When driving the Jeep on the expressway, the entire front end started shimmying from side to side, threatening to pull the steering wheel out of my hands. It stopped when I reduced speed to under 55 mph. Whenever I tried to go over 55 mph, the Jeep resumed it's death wobble. This is not a safe condition to be driving a vehicle in.

3 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

Deadh wobble, really bad vibration coming from the front , especially after going over pothole or railroad tracks, speeds over 30 mph . Its getting to the point where is very easy to someone to loose control of the vehicle and could easily cause hard to the driver or others including dead, Jeep should be aware of this problem is not safe to drive a vehicle that wobbles to the point is not safe to operate. A person could get hurt if this ploblem doest get look into it. You guys are more than welcome to test my vehicle and see if you guys would drive a vehicle like this on the daily basis, is like a bomb ready to explode at any time. Is dangerous to drive. Please take a look at this before someone gets hurt, I am also documenting that I submitted this request to you guys just encase something happens to me or anyone. I will say I told you so.

4 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2016

The vehicle would not turn on I would have to continuously turn the ignition and finally it will turn on. The vehicle has recently began stalling and turning off when I would be sitting at a traffic light and vibrating very scarely. The check engine light came on so I took it to my machanic who stated it needed to have a tuneup because it was misfiring on five cylinders instead of six cylinders. The was done but five days later the problem returned and this time the taillight on the right side of the vehicle alone with the right side signal light were both out. I then took the vehicle to Jeep who charged me $140 just to tell me that it would cost me another $870 to replace the tipm. I don't understand how this could be happening on a vehicle with 72,000 miles if it was not defected to begin with. Barbara king.

5 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2015

A few weeks after getting the rhd clock spring redesigned style I kept going out of control on turns, and when the road was covered in snow the wheels would lock up and I would go out of control and spin in a circle. The new design clock spring didn't work from the beginning, and it could have caused a catastrophic event a new old style clockspring had to be installed to fix the problem for the 7th time.

6 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2015

The clock spring ceased to work turning off the airbag, there was a shudder and the tcs (traction controlled system) began braking on its own. Then when the brakes were depressed the system went shuddery and quit working. This is a known issue with 2007 thru 2013 Jeep Wranglers and there is a recall on the part, except that crysler has determined that it only affects a very limited number of Jeeps. This is not the case. A search on google will show hundreds of cases where the clock spring breaks, causing the airbags to become turned off and the end and tcs systems to go haywire, making the vehicle uncontrollable and undriveable. Chrysler has refused to recall the part in Wranglers Jeep liberty and two other brands. The hazzard is compounded immensely if you happen to get (death wobble) yet another unfixed issue. This will lead to accidents and death, if it hasn't already.

7 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2014

The air bag light turned on and when the steering wheel is turned and hit any bump the light dings and stays on.

8 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

Driving down the road at approx 50mph, hit a small bump and the Jeep started to shake violently back and forth. I had to grab the wheel with both hands push on the break. I pulled to the side of the road, thinking my tire had fallen off (everything was still there). When I got home I did some research on the internet and found this is a common problem with Jeeps, they have labelled it "Jeep death wobble". I live in yosemite national park, which has windy roads with no guard rails. If this happens again while driving on tioga rd. I don't doubt it could end in a fatality. This "death wobble" now has me scared to drive my Jeep and I'm not the only Jeep owner that feels the same way.

9 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

While driving my Jeep Wrangler 2009, I hit a bump in the road and the car went into the death wobble - violently shaking from side-to-side. The only way to stop it was to slow down or come to a near stop and then continue. It does this very often now - usually starts somewhere between 35-55 mph and just after hitting a bump.

10 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2012

On the 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4-dr 4x4 (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags. The abs esp and bas lights come on when going over a bump, having a car wash or going around a corner. This has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4-dr 4x4 (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. It's all over the web on various online Jeep forums. This faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4-dr 4x4 (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. Daimler Chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. I have spent over $1000 replacing parts and getting the Jeep Chrysler certified technicians to diagnose the issue and resolve it but to date they have not and the lights are still on.

11 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2012

Esp/bas check engine light on, took it to the dealership, they said it was a bad clock spring, they fixed it since it was just under the 50k mile warranty, three weeks later I was over the 50k warranty and the light came on again, took it back and it was the clock spring again dealership fixed it again then a bit over a year later it went again, I don't go off roading or anything crazy now I have to drop 600 bucks (parts+labor) to fix it again in order to make sure the airbag goes off in the event of an accident crazy this is not a recall yet, a common Jeep problem that effects airbags and suspension.

12 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2011

I experienced a classic "death wobble" as described on Jeep problems. Com. Extreme shaking from side to side and loss of ability to steer until I slowed down below 20 mph.

13 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

This car has what you call the death wobble. The original part has been replaced twice, making it a total of three same parts. It is a 2009 but only has 27000 miles on it. The incident always happened highway driving at about 60 to 65 miles an hour. Felt like a flat tire then settled down. Not sure of the part name replaced twice, but it is I believe in the steering mechanism. Of course both times replaced not under warranty. It is a major concern hence the name death wobble.

14 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) to whom it may concern: I have a 2009 four door Jeep Wrangler unlimited with a defect in the electronic stability system. While traveling on the interstate in may 2010, the dash board slipping indicator light started flashing and the vehicle clamped down on the front right brake driving me off the interstate into the grass. Fortunately, I was able to stop before having an accident. The system then indicated that there was a problem and the esp disarmed itself while disabling the esp. The bas indicator lit. Shortly before I was able to get the vehicle to the garage, the esp module apparently reset itself and the vehicle swerved to the right (front right brake again clamping down) while I was going 30mph. Fortunately, I have 3 mpg videos of this 2nd incident because I happened to have my camera it the passenger seat. . Read more...
