36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2025

With less than 35,000 miles on a 2021 Jeep Wrangler, I have started to experience extreme shaking when going over a bump. Otherwise, known as the “death wobble”. The steering wheel shakes uncontrollably and could cause a serious accident while driving. I was told that the 2021 and newer models would not have this problem due to manufactures addressed the design flaw. Jeep has known about this issue for many years but has done nothing to make repairs or changes to the vehicle design. This is a huge safety concern because I could lose control of my vehicle while the steering shakes uncontrollably or cause an accident because the only way to stop the shaking is to quickly decrease speed. My vehicle was inspected by gillman Jeep in houston, texas.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2025

I was driving down the highway about 75 miles an hour I hit a bump and the front tires started shaking had to pull over before it would stop. About a week later it happened again at 65 mph.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

Jeep Wrangler 2021 death wobble. This is the fourth time I’ve had a death wobble in two years out of nowhere. The vehicle will also of a sudden go into a shaking moving wobbling scenario, which feels completely unsafe to drive. I have brought this vehicle into Jeep four times in the past two years for this problem. I am requesting a buyback. They refuse to buy it back based on this very unsafe situation.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2024

Jeep death wobble. Dealer is acting like this is an unknown issue.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2024

I was driving on the turnpike on or about December 15, 2024. I drove over some ridges on the PA turnpike. My Jeep starting violently shaking out of control it felt like the wheels were gonna pop off. I had to grip onto the steering wheel to try to keep the vehicle from hitting any other cars. It went on for about five minutes then it stopped, but I could feel a change in the way, the steering felt. There was no warning signs on my dashboard . It felt like I didn’t have complete control of the steering. After I got off of the turnpike, I was on 663 trying to get home safely after experiencing this terrifying experience . When I was on 663 I hit a red light and when the light turned green, I went to put my foot on the gas and it would not go so the person behind me almost hit. I had to put the Jeep into park and I put it back into drive then proceeded to go and it was still driving like I didn’t have complete control of the steering so then on December 19 2024. I set up an appointment with sands Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram. When I was on the phone with the advisor, she told me that was the death wobble that I was experiencing, but I need to have the Jeep diagnosed to verify that so I got a multi point inspection report sent to me that said , caution steering linkage (damage/leaks/worn components) pending recommendations replace steering damper (stabilizer) associted item general concern #1 customer states vehicle was shaking heavily on highway. The dealership is charging me when they know that fiat Chrysler automobiles (fca) , the former parent company of Jeep issued a recall for the 2018 to 2019 Jeep, Wrangler and Jeep gladiator models due to a steering wheel vibration issue known as the “ death wobble”. Fca recalled over 190,000 vehicles to replace the front suspension steering damper also known as the stabilizer. And that’s exactly what I needed to have replaced, steering damper also known as stabilizer. Also called Jeep wave. They are trying to get me a discount.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2024

While driving on an interstate at approximately 65 mph, I crossed a bridge. When I ran over the expansion joint the steering wheel started violently shaking in my hands. It continued until I slowed down to a near stop and then was fine. On the same trip, it did this several times. When I took the Jeep to a local dealer, they told me the steering damper (original to the vehicle) was defective. I helps them replace it and so far have not experienced the problem. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Nearly losing control of a vehicle at 65 mph or more, with traffic all around, is extremely dangerous, as is trying to come to a stop as quickly as possible when surrounded by other vehicles that are going just as fast. I found many reports of similar issues with previous models of Jeeps online but obviously their solution did not adequately address the problem.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2024

With only 10,000 miles on the Jeep Wrangler vehicle, we are experiencing the death wobble. We contacted Jeep and they advised us this was not covered under our warranty any longer since past 3 years. We had the dealership request reconsideration on our behalf since this is a known issue and they agreed to pay for 60% of the repair, however they should be liable for all of it since this is an ongoing issue with their vehicles specifically the 2021 year. Please assist us with getting this actually recalled and get reimbursement.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

My 2021 Jeep Wrangler unlimited started shaking uncontrollably at highway speeds, and whenever I hit a bump in the road. I took it to a dealership which shows no active recalls. The dealership ran a diagnostic a d claims it is a faulty steering wheel damper. As this is an ongoing issue from previous Jeep years, I was hoping you could investigate.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2024

See attached document for complaint.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2024

I was traveling at 55 mph on 4 lane highway and hit a bumo in the road. The vehicle began to shake to a point where it was nearly uncontrollable. I was able to get to the side of the road and stop. I then drove slowly and the shaking stopped. This was on a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Further investigation indicated that this is a wide spread problem with Jeep Wranglers. I have taken the vehicle to the local Jeep dealer who verified it the death wobble. It apparently is due to a malfunctioning steering damper. I have instructed the dealer to repair but they have indicated that there is no reimbursement for this problem despite its common occurrence on Jeep Wranglers.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2024

In the three years I have owned this vehicle I have had the steering damper replaced to correct uncontrollable vibrating of the steering wheel, commonly referred to as the “death wobble”. The issue occurs when driving at highway speeds and requires the driver to quickly slow down to stop the “wobble”. There is no warning light or detection, and the issue come on quickly. The dealer has identified the problem with the remedy being replacement of the steering damper. While this does initially fix the symptoms, it does not correct the problem, as I have had three dampers replaced in 24 months. This is obviously only a bandaid and not the correct fix for this dangerous problem. My opinion is that a recall is needed to allow for a proper repair.

47 Steering problem

The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the contact experienced failure known as the death wobble. The contact stated that the vehicle started shaking violently after driving over a bump in the roadway, causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. The contact regained control of the vehicle once the vehicle had slowed down and the shaking ceased. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the model year vehicle was not covered under recall. The contact was then informed that the steering wheel stabilizer needed to be installed to prevent the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2024

This has happened several times and I have spent so much money trying to fix the issue but I dont seem to be able to do so. Whenever I am driving my Jeep on any road at speeds above 55 miles per hour the front wheels begin to vibrate violently and shake the car. After researching this is called "death wobbles. " it is very scary when it happens and even more so when I have my children in the car. It feels as if the car is losing control and have been thrown off the road a couple of times due to the loss of control. I am worried and scared to drive my Jeep around due to this oscillating movement in the wheels and I am no longer understanding what could be the issue. My guess is the Jeep was manufactured with an aluminum gear box instead of a steel gear box. I think it is unfair to have to fix issues like these out of pocket, especially since I am still making payments on this vehicle. This has happened many times but it began in fall of 2024.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

When driving on highway my car is losing control. This is non-stop every time I hit a bump in the road. The vehicle becomes uncontrollable.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2024

Beginning September 30th I experienced the death wobble while driving on the highway. It cause violent shaking of my vehicle. It stopped when I slowed to about 50 mph, each subsequent day after that it would start shaking when I reached a speed of over 60 mph. It is currently with the dealer to be repaired. Issues include: steering shock has air, also there is an updated longer shoulder bolt that holds the dampner that should fix the steering wheel shake. They also discovered the shock absorbers leak shock oil. In addition, I have had to replace the auxiliary battery placed 2x since I have bought and it is already draining to low levels, which will prevent the electronic system to work less than 1 year after replacing the battery last. These all are defects to the design and should be recalled as they are safety issues.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2024

When driving above 30 mph and going over a bump the car shakes and wobbles violently feeling like the tires and steering wheel will fall off. This has been referred to as the “death wobble. ” the car has some warranty remaining and is going in for repair with an authorized Jeep dealer.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

Death wobble. Loose, or misaligned mechanical parts shake violently when driving on highway causing the “wobble” in the front end steering and suspension. Exactly the same way the 2018 and 2019 Jeep issue occurred, as noted by nthsa in 2019.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2024

I was driving to work on 7-25-24 at approximately 65 mph and suddenly my Jeep started to shake . It was so violent I just grabbed the wheel so tight , let off the gas and hoped I didn't crash. Cars were swerving around me. I called the dealer and told them the problem. I refused to drive the car and had it towed to the dealer. This is the second time this death wobbled happened in the last two years. The dealer ended up changing the steering damper both times. I feel just changing the same parts is not fixing this problem. Now I have a vehicle that I'm deathly afraid of driving. Apparently there is a known problem with this death wobble . I am writing this not just for my self but everyone else that is at risk and don't even know about this. I hope someone really looks into this problem . I am not sure what my rights are and want to get out of my lease . This car is not worth dying for. Thanks in advance for you help.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2024

In Jan 2023 my Jeep experienced the “death wobble” where I hit a bump at speeds above 60mph and the steering started violently shaking. The Jeep was less than 2 years old and had less than 20,000 miles; all stock, never lifted and not used for offroad. I took the Jeep to the gilbert az Jeep dealership who determined it was the steering stabilizer and replaced it. This week, in July 2024 the death wobble returned on the freeway going full freeway speed and I struggled to maintain control of the vehicle. I contacted the Jeep dealership and they said I could pay $200 to diagnose and if it was the steering stabilizer again all they could do was put a new one on. If it was anything else they would not cover as the Jeep was 5 months out of warranty - but has only 29,000 miles on it. His suggestion was to buy an aftermarket part. He said this part fails frequently. This is unacceptable! why has this part not been recalled or remade?? this is going to result in a violent accident or death.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2024

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler wheels wobble at moderate speeds. The dealer informed me that Jeeps up til 2020 had this problem and it was covered under a extended warranty. I just had to spend over $300 to get the steering damper replaced and I cannot get anyone at Jeep to talk to me about this problem, even though it is a known problem.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

I am reporting a serious safety defect involving my 2021 Jeep Wrangler rubicon (VIN: [xxx]). The most significant issue occurred at approximately 50,000 miles when the vehicle experienced a violent steering and suspension instability event commonly referred to as "death wobble. " while traveling at approximately 60 mph on a highway, the vehicle suddenly began shaking violently from side to side. The steering wheel became extremely difficult to control, and I had to fight to maintain control of the vehicle while slowing down in active traffic. The event was severe enough that I genuinely feared the vehicle could roll over or cause a collision. Prior to my experience, my wife experienced a similar incident while driving the same vehicle. The safety risk extends beyond my family to surrounding motorists who could be involved if the driver loses control. Immediately following the incident, I contacted the servicing dealership, Jeep Chrysler of somerset, massachusetts. The dealership informed me this was a known issue and instructed me not to drive the vehicle above 55 mph until it could be inspected. After inspection, I was advised that the steering damper was defective and that additional suspension-related components could also be contributing factors. The steering damper was replaced, but I was required to pay for the repair. The dealership further advised that instability could continue and recommended changing to smaller tires to reduce the issue. I also reported concerns through Jeep/stellantis customer service channels and have documented multiple service visits regarding this and other vehicle issues. Despite repairs, the vehicle has never driven the same. My family avoids highway travel in the vehicle, and we do not feel comfortable transporting our children on long trips due to concern information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2024

The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 60 mph over a bumpy road surface, the vehicle experienced the death wobble. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle was wobbling violently from side to side, and pulling towards the opposite lane. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving and exceeding 40 mph on a bumpy road surface. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the steering shock absorber system needed to be upgraded to a double steering shock absorber system. The dealer informed the contact that the repair could not be covered under the vehicle's warranty. The contact declined to pay for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they were awaiting for the dealer to submit a claim with the diagnostic report. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2024

After a period of 10 minutes in stop-and-go traffic, a shift warning light indicated on the warning panel. All the lights for the gear shift lever would light up individually. The vehicle turned off the stability control system and indicated a warning to proceed driving however the vehicle may not be able to shift into park. After about 3 miles of driving, it felt like the power steering stopped working and it was extremely difficult to control and turn the vehicle. It also felt like the vehicle would not shift properly. Once the vehicle was to the side of the road, it indicated that the vehicle was not in park despite moving the gear shift lever to park. The vehicle would not turn off of accessory mode. Had whatever happened to the power steering happened at any higher rate of speed, the vehicle would have been impossible to control in a turn or traffic. It took every bit of arm strength to coax the vehicle to the side of the road.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2024

While driving vehicle on highway at 70mph, vehicle went completely out of control shaking violently and would not stop violently shaking until a complete stop on a highway. My wife thought she was going to die. Apparently this is known in the Jeep community as the "death wobble. " there needs to be a recall immediately before someone dies. This is completely un expectable.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2024

While driving down the road, whether local road at 45mph or on the interstate at 70mph, under certain conditions the front end starts to wobble out of control and I have to stop the vehicle to get the wobble to stop. This is a known problem and on all of the forums you can see discussions about this exact issue. There is a problem with defective steering dampers which may be undersized for the Jeep Wrangler. This has happened on multiple occasions to me. I went to the local dealership early January 2024 under warranty and they confirmed a defective steering damper. They said the part was scheduled to arrive Jan 30, 2024. Today is March 6 and the part is still on back order for at least 45 days as per the parts department. These vehicles need to be pulled off of the road or Jeep needs to be forced to get the parts ASAP. The local dealership said they have several Jeep wraglers waiting on this part. This is a nationwide problem. Please help get this addressed. Jeep has identified the problem but the lack of parts is the issue. Putting heat on Jeep is what needs to be done. I have attached an article that discusses this issue named the Jeep death wobble.

It continues to experience the death wobble in cold temperatures to a point of severe inability to control. The dealer will not honor the warranty and factory wants to charge 200 dollars to diagnose for a third time. Even though they are totally aware of the issue.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2024

While driving our Jeep there are many times on the highway that it starts to shake and wobble very bad. To the point where we have to slow down sometimes under 50mph before it stops doing it. It is very dangerous and the dealer keeps telling us when they test drive it it doesn't do it so there's nothing they can do. Stay away from these.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

My 2021 Wrangler began experiencing a violent shaking and reduction of steering control in July 2023. The violent shaking would begin if my vehicle hit a bump while traveling at 65 mph or more. To regain control, I would have to brake and reduce speed to under 65mph (which also is extremely dangerous to do on a freeway). Thunder Jeep in bartow, FL replaced a broken steering component that temporarily fixed the issue. The issue has now returned in late January 2024. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2024

Was driving on the freeway about 65mph-70mph when suddenly the Jeep started the shake tremendously. Luckily there was no traffic, and I was able to pull over and stop the car immediately. This is a big safety concern as it made it hard to control and traumatizing for the driver. Cars should not do that. We are scheduling an appointment to ensure nothing is broken. No warnings were shown when the incident happened.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2024

My son was driving our 2021 Jeep Wrangler in the town of state college and the power steering pump stopped working - the vehicle has less than 25k miles. He was able to to move the car out of traffic and avoid an accident. He is very lucky as if this would have happened on the 300 miles of highway between our home and state college at 65mph this could have ended in tragedy after waiting three weeks for the first available appt at the dealer - the dealer said the power steering pump is defective. No warning lights, no symptoms of a problem.

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2024

My Jeep has 42,000 miles on it and the entire steering assembly has to be replaced.
