The vehicle experienced a sudden, catastrophic, un-commanded emergency braking event while moving in active traffic. Despite the driver's seatbelt being securely buckled, the vehicle overrode its own safety programming, dropping all propulsion, violently engaging the electronic brakes, and forcing the transmission straight into park at low speeds at an intersection. This occurred immediately after the vehicle received an official factory high-voltage hybrid safety recall remedy last month. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership, where a diagnostic scan logged a false 'door ajar / autopark' fault code. The safety system critically malfunctioned by ignoring a buckled seatbelt to execute a dangerous emergency stop in traffic. The vehicle is completely unsafe to operate on public roads due to an unpredictable brake and powertrain safety override defect. The manufacturer is currently refusing to provide direct-bill rental assistance while the vehicle sits undiagnosed on the dealer lot.
Parked my 2023 Wrangler 4xe for about three hours. When I started driving again the brake pedal was hard and it took way longer than normal to stop. No warning lights, no codes on the obd reader. Toggling max regen on and off made no difference. Power cycling the vehicle didn’t fix it. Pads are warm so the calipers are engaging, but there’s very little stopping force behind them. I would guess there is an electrical issue with the regenerative breaking system or brake vacuum.
Over the past two days, the vehicle has intermittently displayed an electronic stability control (esc) system error message while driving. At the same time, the brake pedal becomes extremely hard to press, as if the brake booster or power assist is not functioning. When this occurs, it requires significantly increased force to slow or stop the vehicle, creating a serious safety hazard. The issue appears randomly and then resolves on its own. The vehicle starts normally, but the brake assist failure and esc warning recur intermittently without warning. No modifications have been made to the braking system. I lightly tapped my house due to the sudden loss of braking power. No accident with another vehicle or person.
While driving at about 55 mph my Wrangler shut down and dash read to put car in park to calibrate battery. I had to bring vehicle to side of road and try to restart. It did restart. I had a recall addressed at marc motors sanford maine service dept back in April 18, 2025. For recall for high voltage. Not sure why recall is showing incomplete? I am very scared to drive this car. I called the dealership in which directed me to call Jeep customer service. No one could help me. I was told I had to pay for a rental. I do not have such funds. In the mean time I am forced to drive an unsafe vehicle that shuts off anytime while driving. I'm leasing this vehicle from stellantis and still have no help or support. I'm afraid to drive this car. I have no other means of transportation. I need to be able to transport to my job. I was told by dealership and Jeep customer service that there is no solution to fix such recall. Not until the first quarter of 2026. Please, I need a solution thank you [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Jeep 4xe: after coming to a complete stop or just slowing down and entering a lower gear, has a 1-2 second delay in the accelerator. Has caused tires to squeal when accelerator started to respond. Have almost caused accidents when becoming unresponsive as the vehicle will move forward but lose accelerator power. This happens infrequently and spontaneously which makes it impossible to plan for/ drive defensively against, cannot replicate or force it to happen. Vehicle can be inspected upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? vehicle will move forward after stopping, such as an intersection, and suddenly does not increase for 1-2 seconds making me a hazard to traffic. This happens maybe 1-3x a week and is impossible to replicate. Have been almost rear ended many times as no brake lights appear when this happens. Have almost been t-boned by oncoming traffic because of the delay. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? vehicle has had engine repaired and inspected by dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked, causing him to momentarily lose control of the vehicle. Upon attempting to bring the vehicle to a stop, the contact stated that the brake pedal was stuck in its resting position, prompting him to pull the parking brake, which also failed to bring the vehicle to a stop. As a result, the contact stated that he collided with the vehicle ahead. An unknown warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel prior to the failure being experienced. The air bags did deploy. A police report was filed, and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and later towed to the dealer, who declined to diagnose the vehicle due to the body damage. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 10,000.
