This complaint has not been qc¿d. The contact submitted an email and requested that the official ivoq be written verbatim to the email. Kmj tl- while driving on a two lane highway at 65 mph with oncoming trucks coming by, the hood of my 2012 Jeep Wrangler would lift up to the limits of the hood latches. These factory latches are made of heavy duty rubber and do not hold the hood down/in place firmly as the air from the oncoming traffic pushes on the Jeep. The hood can be visually seen to move upwards and bow with a loud bang. I contacted Jeep Chrysler and was told to contact the dealer (prestige Chrysler Jeep Dodge of las vegas, nevada). I did this and was told that they were aware of the problem but would not do anything since it was a Chrysler issue and the dealership could not do anything under warranty. I was also told that mopar has metal latches but I would have to purchase them. Since this is a very scary situation with the possibility of the hood being lifted back into the windshield, it can have serious consequences such as a deadly accident. This is definitely a design flaw; I feel that the NHTSA should make Chrysler replace the hood latches with the steel ones at no cost to me. This is a very real problem and needs to be rectified by the NHTSA because Chrysler will not listen to me. I hope that someone at the NHTSA investigates this before there is a serious accident and someone is killed. Updated 11/14/12 updated 11/14/2012 updated 11/30/12.

The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Wrangler sport. The contact stated that when traveling over 65 mph, the front hood would continuously lift and bang against the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who offered no assistance and advised that the failure would not cause any problems. The manufacturer was notified who offered no other assistance. There were no repairs performed on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 3,250. Updated 12/12/11 the consumer stated the hood lifts and bangs against the safety latch. The constant banging against the safety cannot be good and could potentially damage the latch to the point it is no longer functional. The consumer stated the hood latch is made of rubber and plastic. The rubber stretches while the vehicle is in motion. Updated 12/14/11.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the hood latches fractured and caused the hood to fly open and strike the windshield while driving. The contact stated there was an emergency latch to prevent the failure but the emergency latch also fractured. Whenever the vehicle was driven in windy weather, the hood would shake abnormally. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that there was no coverage for the latches on the vehicle and the vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 38,000 and the current mileage was 50,000.

2009 Jeep Wrangler. Consumer states problem with hood latches the consumer stated while driving 70 mph, an 18-wheeler passed in the opposite direction going approximately the same speed, when suddenly the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently. When it happened again, he then noticed the hood violently bouncing up and down. The consumer found a customer satisfaction notification on the internet regarding the hood latch.
The right side hood latch has failed 4 times in the since I have owned the Jeep which was purchased new in June 2006. This is a catastrophic failure while driving at highway speeds allows the hood to lift and placing all of the load on the existing left hood latch. This causes the hood to bend but much more importantly if the left latch fails would allow the hood to lift an obscure the windshield. This is an obvious safety hazard. Latch has been replace by Jeep dealer under manufacturers warranty.

Hood pops up at highway speeds due to inadequate, unsafe rubber hood latches. At highway speeds the two rubber hood straps are not strong enough to hold the hood closed. On two lane roads, the air turbulence from large oncoming vehicles will cause the hood to lift approximately two inches until the safety latch engages. This causes a dangerous distraction when the hood rises and then slams down after the oncoming vehicle passes.

When driving my vehicle in windy conditions or when passing trucks on the highway either from the front or rear, the hood will move up and slam against the stop. It is so hard you can see the movement and hear the hood hit the safety catch. It will do this anytime there is a buffeting wind from the front or side. I am concerned the the hood will fail and come off and hit the windshield with a disastrous force.
Hood raises up 2 to 3 inches during high winds or when passed by approaching large truck.
The hood of my Jeep lifts up during the following conditions: 1) when driving at highway speeds on a windy day. 2) when driving over 50mph and a large vehicle, such as a truck, passes in the opposite direction. It appears that the 2 hood latches (one on each side) stretch enough to allow the hood to lift when there is sufficient air pressure generated from wind. The center hood latch has caught the hood during these occasions. I am concerned that the hood may come completely unlatched, then raise all the way up thus blocking my view - which may result in an accident.
Hood raises up about 2 inches and the safety catch holds the hood down when a semi truck is coming from the opposite direction or on windy days. The causes a big distraction when it looks as if the hood is going to fly up on a regular basis. Dealership advised that there is not a recall on the hood latches.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Wrangler 4x4. While driving 65 mph or greater in windy conditions, the hood would vibrate and elevate half an inch. The dealer installed two rubber stops under the hood; however, the failure continued. As of November 13, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 800 and current mileage was 15,140. Updated 01-11-08. The consumer stated the dealer informed him to put a weather strip on the vehicle but this method did not correct the defect. Updated 12/12/07.
Both external rubber side latches failed on 1997 Jeep Wrangler. The hood flipped up and obscured the driver's visibility. The hood was destroyed by its impact against the roof. This vehicle had been manufactured w/o the standard internal latch due to several parts changes during the manufacturing year. An internal latch could not be fitted to the mis-matched hood and grill.

Dt: was driving eastbound, a tractor trailer was westbound, the turbulence behind tractor trailer caused the external hood latches to fail. The safety hook in the center of the hood also failed to keep the hood down. The hood flew up striking windshield and folded over shattering windshield. Lost visibility however maintained control of vehicle.
While hood was propped up and latched in, wind was blowing hard enough that it unlatched the hood, and hood flew up and hit windshield. Consumer was afraid that if someone was under hood it could slam down onto someone's head. Pleaese provide any further information,.

Hood flew open at 30mph. Chrysler redesigned latch but not recalled. Original hood latch not appropriate without use of side latches, even at low speeds.
I was checking my oil on the vehicle, when a moderate wind caused the hood to be blown back against the top of the windshield of the vehicle, causing the hood to be dented. This is a safety problem because the hood support rod did not catch in any way, and if the hood did not fall all the way back to the windshield, it could have hit me in the head. This was not documented in any way in the owner's manual, or on the hood. This could cause a serious injury someone.

When driving at normal hiway speeds the hood will blow up in high winds or when another vehicle passes. The side hood latches hold it down, but it moves a good 2-3 inches up.

Hood latches are made of rubber allowing them to give when meeting oncoming traffic. Latches failed twice on windy days when meeting large vehicles on roadway.
