3 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 04/27/2011

The car caught on fire, kia says they sent a notification to the original owner, years ago. We feel that we were entitled to a recall notice before the car burned down. We feel this is not a small recall, it was a fire, a fire is very dangerous and can burn and kill people. We had 22 kias Rios in our fleet and never received recall notices on any of them. Kia did send notices to the original owner however they had the information as to which cars received the recommended repairs and which cars never came in, there needs to be some follow up.

4 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 04/27/2011

Our car caught on fire. Kia says that recall notices were sent out to the previous owner to take the car to a kia dealer for repairs. Notice was sent out years ago (2002). Kia knew that the repairs were never done because no dealership had billed kia for repairs. For nine (9) years this car was on the road without a safety recall being performed for fire. For nine years we registered this car and kia made no attempt to find out who owns the vehicle. Kia is being very unethical because they say that a notice was sent out (one notice) and now they have done their obligation.

5 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/28/2010

Kia placed a bulletin with you on 1/1/05,#tsb82,#10015272. Apparently kia thought that was enough. My kia was purchased 7/21/05. I was told I had "bumper to bumper coverage if I purchased the additional 4,000. Extended warranty. They were required to furnish me with a complete warranty disclosure before purchase. They did furnish me with a booklet called warranty and consumer information manual and a pamphlet called start up tips for your kia. I did read these. And the timing belt isn't mentioned. Later when I read my owners manual I did notice that the maintenance requirements did mention the timing belt, it should be checked at 30,000 mi, 60,000mi and possibly changed at 105,000. Kia does claim 100,000 warranty, and I had the bumper to bumper cov, so I still felt pretty confident in my car. If kia had completely disclosed all the maintenance at the time of purchase I would have walked. At 38,000 mi I was on my way to wa. I was just about to the top of rice hill when something happened. 6 lanes of 70mph traffic, concrete on all sides and nowhere to go, when the car lost power. It was very disorienting the engine revved but no power, no check engine light, nothing,I was dumbfounded. I put my flashers on and was able to coast to the rt. Lane. We pushed it over the top of rice hill and coasted to the shoulder. I called kia, they told me I had no coverage, because my car was a week past 5 yrs. We towed it to kia where they told me I wasn't covered. So I called kia and they told me it was up to the service man. . I went back to kia, and the manager told me I needed to do a diag test ($174. ) which I knew was impos. Because the car won't start. Afterward the service man told me he had looked at my car and the tb was gone but the pistons were fine which is rare. They won't fix it. I went online and found 100 consumers with blown engines and defect. Timing belts. Whats up? this is dangerous! it can cause accidents! I was lucky! do something.

6 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

2009 kia Rio had strong gasoline smell inside and outside car cabin, last Thursday, July 15, 2010 at approximately 5:15 pm on large busy highway. Pulled off highway and checked under hood and under car carriage for leaking gas. No leaks noted. No check engine light. Odor was strong my eyes were burning and I got a headache. Called local dealer and took car in. They said there was nothing they could do, it was normal in hot weather for it to vent. The service rep did note the strong odor of gas. Took it home and garaged it with gas hot water heater in the garage. Next morning I awoke on the third floor condo to the smell of gas. Went to the garage and the odor was so strong in the garage, it overwhelmed me. I took the car back to kia and they examined it and said it was normal. Notified the 1-800 kia number. I had the local kia change the fuel filter, it was not due for that yet but they said it might help. It has to be toxic to be inhaling that kind of fume. How can anyone consider this normal? I thought we had emissions standards to protect the public from this. Is my garage going to ignite?.

7 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/09/2007

Driving in traffic, made right turn into driveway at 30 mph and the engine died, steering was now unassisted. I rolled the car into a parking spot. The car started upon my return to the car. This has happened at least 6 other times since I've owned the vehicle. The car has less than 60, 000 miles and has amassed numerous repair issues: failure of automatic transmission; rear wheel bearing replacement; defective side mirror that screams at high speeds/freeway driving w/windy conditions; sun visors which do not adhere to placement; and windshield washer pump failure. Upon acquiring the vehicle this was the first problem I took the car in for repair. And on subsequent visits, it has been an issue, but the problem persists.

8 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 04/24/2006

Purchased car, 2001 kia Rio, in October of 2000. Within a few days airbag light came on. This occurred several times over a one year period and had to be taken back to dealer for repair at least four times. Recall was received for fuel system. This was replaced without problem. Next problem occurred with wheels, which was also a recall. I had to order the wheels which took at least a month to come in leaving me to drive to and from work, 65 miles each way, on violently vibrating wheels. Wheels were finally replaced. Problem occurred in winter 2005 with door latch. Driver side door would lock and stay locked. Vehicle was taken to original dealer for repair only to have old part repaired while being charged for new part and labor. Within a few days, door latch failed again. Took vehicle to another dealer who ordered new part. In the meantime I waited for part to arrive, and drove around in a car whose door didn't lock, leaving my car prey to thieves, who stole things constantly from me. Finally this was fixed but, the passenger side door lock did the same thing. I look the car back to the dealer who told me that they could not fix it since my warranty was up and to fix it would cost me $700 or more. I've also noticed a problem with the car stalling in traffic. This is a new problem. Example: I stop to get gas, start the car and turn out into traffic and the car shuts down. During the winter of 2005 while waiting for door locks to come in, my driver side wheel bearing went out. This was repaired but subsequently the next day after repair while driving into work, wheel bearing literally crumbled. Had car towed to dealer who informed me that an old part was mistakenly put back on the car. This was repaired and replaced with a new part. These are all safety and quality control issues.

11 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/20/2004

My 2003 kia Rio has died out on me about six times so far. I have brought it into the dealer each time, now and they have said that they could not duplicate the problem or find a problem. They have replaced a throttle position sensor however, that did not help. My car doesn't die out all the time only once in awhile. It has died out while reversing, driving on the highway, waiting at a stoplight. I have pursued lemon law in hawaii and am waiting for the decision of the arbitrator. At hearing, manufacturer knew of stalling defect however, he said it did not apply to my VIN number. I have also had problems with the shocks on my vehicle, they do not absorb much and make noise when I go on a bumpy road. My car also makes a large whistling sound when driving over 50 mph but it only occurs sometimes.

12 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

Over the last month my car has stalled out over ten times, usually during heavy traffic. I have taken it to the dealer three times but they have not been able to duplicate or fix the problem. According to them the engine light needs to be on; once it stalled and the light came on, I immediately drove it to the dealer but the technicians said it was not on when they restarted the car. The car also runs rough and feels like it loses power intermittently. I have lost all confidence in the car and worry about where and when it may stall out. The service people have been very helpful and respectful but the problem has become so bad I may need to file lemon law papers.
