3 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/16/2024

Our granddaughter bought this car from a private seller. My son is a mechanic and when he inspected the undercarriage he found a small leak in the seam of the gas tank. The local kia dealer said it is not covered. This, to me, is a safety and emissions issue. Please assist. The car is available at any time for inspection. Thank you.

4 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 04/19/2024

My 2018 kia Rio actually lit up on fire as I was driving down the highway on way to work. As I drove down the highway, I noticed that I had trouble using the brakes. It seemed as if they were working one second and then not working the next. At that time, I noticed fire coming from underneath the car and I was able to get the vehicle to the side of the road. As I was exiting the vehicle, the flames were coming up on either side of the driver and passenger doors. Within the next couple minutes the car exploded. Fire rescue put out the fire and the interstate was closed to all traffic. Since the incident, my family and I have done research and found several incidents with very similar stories with regard to what happened to the vehicle. I believe it is well documented that there is a problem with certain kia models that involves some kind of deficiency in the brake line that can cause the puncture/severing of fuel line. The end result can include "loss of braking ability" and "potential fire hazard". Reading these other incident reports from other families was exactly the way the vehicle reacted in my own incident. I could've lost my life in this incident and I wholeheartedly believe that liability lays with the manufacturer. My vehicle was very well maintained. Regular maintenance included inspections, tires, oil changes and more. There is no reason why this should've occurred. I have tried to contact the kia dealership where I purchased the car, the service manager, and other kia dealerships in the area (mufreesboro, TN) and have been told there is absolutely nothing I can do and I find that unacceptable. Understand that there are witnesses, photos, new coverage photos etc. I sincerely hope to get a response on how to pursue damages and to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

5 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/15/2024

My 2013 kia Rio began dying while I was driving it in mid January 2024. Approximately three weeks after this began occurring, my oil pressure sensor light started flickering when I would turn the corner. As soon as I got home, I checked the oil and it was empty. I had not previously experienced this and always kept up with the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. The incidences of my car dying while driving have increased while I waited to get into the dealership to have it checked (it was a one week wait and there were no earlier appointments available. I took my car to suntrup kia south. Service advisor brian richter texted me to ask if he could call me. During our phone conversation, he stated that this is a known issue with kia vehicles excessively burning oil, which then causes the catalytic converter to clog and the engine to die. It is a fatal flaw and there is no fix other than to replace the engine, which I would have to pay for. He said kia extended certain warranties, but mine was not one of them. The last time I drove my car before taking it to the dealership, I barely missed getting hit when my car stopped while turning a corner and there was a car behind me. I found information indicating that a class action lawsuit had previously been filed, but was dropped by the class with no details given as to the reason. I now have to buy a car because it will cost more to replace the engine than the car is worth. It only has 107,000 miles on it. I would appreciate any help or advice that you can offer. Thank you.

6 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/14/2023

A few months last year took my car in for regular oil change and within about 3 weeks after the oil change the car was out of oil from the point had to start adding oil once a month and then more recently the car just would stop oil would be practically empty have to jump the car recently the car just started smoking and almost stopped on the highway I never saw where the oil was leaking from looked it up and the exact same engine in Hyundai cars was recalled.

7 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 01/15/2023

Issue 1) power steering wheel stopped working after practicing parking in preparation for a drivers test. Issue 2) fuel indicator did not worked as expected, takes 3 to 5 min (in motion) to get the indicator in the right position. I took the vehicle to the dealership, it was scanned and according to them, no dtc was stored, I got videos when both issues came up.

8 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 08/30/2022

On 08. 30. 22 while driving on the interstate i75 going approx. 75 mph my vehicle just lost speed and I barely made it to the side of the road. It did not shut off just had no power, this was at 63,000 miles and had to have the catalytic converter replaced. Total cost $1800. Fast forward to 12. 10. 22 same thing happened and was told once again need a new catalytic converter. Also have had all maintenance done and this gdi engine burns approx. 1 quart of oil every 2 weeks. Also make not that the engine light never came on with either event.

10 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 06/29/2022

On June 29, 2022, I was driving on I-5 southbound when I heard a loud sort of tapping sound coming from my engine. About 30 minutes later, before I had time to get to a gas station, there was a loud "boom!" sound and all of a sudden, the catalytic converter light and some other dash lights started to flash and I started to lose power. I pulled over to the left shoulder of the highway and before I could even pop the hood, I noticed flames immediately licking from the underside of the hood. I grabbed my phone and pulled my rabbit in her cage from the back seat of the car and called 911. My car continued to burn, starting a small brush fire, until the fire department finally came and put the fire out. The whole front of my car was completely incinerated and it had made its way to the back hatch in less than hour. I don't know for certain what caused this as the only indication of a problem was the loud tapping sound- zero dash lights were flashing until the boom. I had just taken the car in for an oil change and general check up less than a week before, and they saw nothing amiss. Geico, my insurance company, has inspected it to determine that it is, in fact, a total loss, but I'm sure they didn't do a sort of diagnostic to determine what happened to cause the incident. I am beyond lucky that I was able to escape my car with my pet and my life, but had the fire moved any faster through the car, we would be dead. It all happened within an hour.

11 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/15/2022

On 04/07/22, I took my vehicle into covina valley kia to replace a fuel line that had melted being constructed too close to the engine. About a month before the line, I noticed smoke was coming from under the hood. Other parts were too close to the gdi engine and were melting, and/or burning. For instance, the ignition coil/engine wire(s) cluster plastic holder which is mounted on the engine, was melting, breaking, and burning. Also the foam from the engine cover had caught fire. My car had also been throwing a knock sensor code p0326 every year. Replace it each time. Then the last time I fixed it, I got another p0326 that changed into fuel too rich code p2192. I inquired to kia management about the 2015 service bulletin: sb-10089747-5448 concerning the constant codes. But manager said that a ecu upgrade may not help and to come down just to clear the codes to see if that helped. The car has been maintained, oil/filter changes 3,000 miles and I am the second owner. But these problems occurred without warning. Bad manufacturing, had to also replace the fuel pressure regulator valve, fuel feed pipe, and all four injectors due to melted plastic making it into the delivery rail from the melted fuel line which is plastic. Will attached my service bill and main receipts for parts bought to rectify this problem.

12 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

I drove to a local store while my friend went shopping I remained in the vehicle and let it idle I proceeded to drive away to head home and the car started having idle and throttle malfunction to where there was no gas peddle response and eventually car died I barely got to a parking lot nearby restarted car and same symptoms occurred I was able to give it enough throttle to creep down the road I had to keep restarting motor to get it to move at to which it finally wouldn’t move at all, prior it was leaking oil severely out the bottom what looked like near the oil filter, it now starts and dies immediately with no gas peddle response won’t even rev up to a idle.

14 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 10/02/2021

On 10/02/2021 - was at a stop, put car in drive press the peddle car accelerated at high speed, miss another car and hit tree. Accident cause by acceleration issue with kia Rio. Need advice on how to get kia to replace total vehicle. Auto insurance is just calling it a accident.

15 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 09/07/2021

We purchased a very low miles (42k) kia from the dealer as a 2nd owner. In less than 6 months the car has serious safety issues. The vehicle shuts off and stalls while idling at stop lights, stop signs or slow traffic with no warning. All other powered components like radio, lights etc remain on and functioning. The car is hard to start after the vehicle shuts off and has stalled and takes multiple tries to turn over. When accelerating the vehicle will randomly not respond at all to the gas pedal, will not increase speed, rpm will not move and the car will not respond. When the car does accelerate, it will sputter and rpm will increase dramatically. This is very dangerous to those driving and those on the road. If the vehicle does not respond to acceleration the risk to the driver and occupants is serious. There could be an accident from oncoming traffic both rear and from behind. There is great life threatening risk. Local mechanic stated the car throws no codes when diagnosed, and there is no check engine light on. Kia knows their vehicles have this issue and has recalled many other models in the same years. There are multiple identical NHTSA. Gov complaints noting identical vehicle problems. The problem is not able to be found with diagnostic. The kia Rio should be recalled and repaired immediately. The car was sold with serious safety issues. There was a class action even that did not proceed that alleges the gamma engines cause sudden stalling, excessive oil consumption, engine failures and fires in the vehicles.

17 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 05/29/2021

On may 29th 2021 my 2016 kia Rio engine caught on fire after multiple attempts of letting kia know that my engine had a possible recall/detect. I was told that my car wasn’t apart of the recall list of considered on the list of the 1. 6 million or billion others who’s engines have blown up as well. I have paper work/trail of recent mechanical work/mechanics informing me with “possible recall issues as well”. Paid for an oil change may 21st, visited the mechanic and 8 days later my car was in flames at an exxon gas station pump, literally traumatized.

18 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

My kia Rio will stall at slow speeds. Several times while I was stopped or backing up and the car stalls. When I was driving in a parking lot my car stalled while I was accelerating. I took my kia to a mechanic. He said the problem was the rear fuel filter. He replaced my fuel filter. This did not resolve the problem. He called kia they recommended he reprogram the car. This did not work. He cleaned the fuel filter put it back in the car. This did not solve the problem. His only recommendation. Is to take the car to kia. But if they don't know what the problem is. How can they fix it. Right know I can only hope the doesn't stall and cause an accident.

19 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/02/2020

2012 kia Rio, not currently subject to any recall, and having been maintained correctly, is experiencing dangerous levels of oil consumption. Current milage 108,000. Two weeks ago I sent the attached letter via case to kia consumer customer affairs seeking safety advice from the company relating to the issue. Kia never responded, opting to close the case without a word regarding the issue. Oil consumption is very high, and effecting engine performance. I assume the only recourse is to have the engine taken apart and examined, a costly review, however due to lack of response from kia I haven't yet; I was hoping they could coordinate through either a dealer or 3rd party investigator. Currently the car is not being used, as this anomalous issue is a concern for safety when driving. Considering the recent recall, as well as how the symptoms align with previously recorded issues to similar engines, I wished to create this report, if only to add my case to NHTSA's accounts. Thank you for your time joseph elliott.

21 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 11/17/2019

Brief loss of throttle control along with engine overspeed possibly due to dirty electrical contacts in connector at electronic throttle body -- restored proper operation via flushing of electrical contacts in connector with 100% isopropyl alcohol aerosol spray -- vehicle was being driven into a crowded parking lot at the time -- brakes were effective in keeping the speed under control -- had to shut engine off while in drive in order to keep it from overspeeding -- engine had been running and car had been in motion for previous 45 mins without problems.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/05/2019

Replaced cadalytic converter and oxygen sensor Dec 2017, and engine light is on now with diagnostics saying same things again. Oil needs to be put in car every week or two. Fed up with this car.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

Sold a car that turned out to be a lemon after only a month of having it began breaking down the most recent issue being the Cadillac converter making it a little dangerous to drive because speed is affected along with toxic fuel, whenever I drive up a hill the car is loud slow to where it sometimes rolls backwards or stops and at a green light car can not reach minimum speed cause other cars anger and strong fuel order sometimes when starting car, car cut off once at red light and when turning vehicle moves entirely too slow to when oncoming cars almost make contact.

25 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 04/24/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2016 kia Rio. The contact stated when the accelerator pedal was depressed the vehicle failed to accelerate however, the motor continued to run. There was not warning light before or after the failure occurred. The failure was experienced numerous times while at a stop or traffic light the accelerator pedal had to be depressed several times to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to team kia (1215 scalp avenue johnstown PA 15904 phone 814-266-8611) where the dealer test drove the vehicle however, the failure was unable to be duplicated. A diagnostic testing was also performed that was unable to locate a failure code. The dealership advised that the failure occurred due to low grade fuel. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 915.

26 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

This 2013 kia reo sadan is suppose to get 26 miles per gallon city driving and 37 miles per gallon highway driving. It does not get at lease 15 miles per gallon. The minute you fill up and drive 2 miles your gas hand starts leaning. This car is a 4 cylinder and should not be using gas like this. I believe something is in fuel system.

27 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

On many occasions, since we purchased this 2014 kia Rio, it has had a horrible, intense odor of gasoline that is so strong it overwhelms anyone near it. It starts after 20-30 minutes of driving. I have taken it to the dealer 4 or 5 times and the workers can not find anything wrong with it. One one occasion, the mechanics changed something called the purge canister but the problem continues. I read on the NHTSA that at least two other car owners complained of the same. I have a new born and a 7 year old and I no longer feel safe in this car. The car was purchased for my daughter who has two.

28 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 05/09/2016

The contact owns a 2014 kia Rio. While driving various speeds, a strong fuel odor was present in the vehicle. The failure was persistent. The passenger on many occasions had to be rushed to the hospital due to the fuel odor. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

29 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 12/22/2015

Seat belts, car seat retaining hooks, ecm, and distributor are recalled. Cheyenne kia had 3 weeks before original appointment to get the parts. I delivered the car for repairs only to get a call 4 hours later that they cannot find the parts. It has now been 6 weeks since picking up my car and they cannot find the parts to do the recall repairs. All I have been able to do is leave a message with jennifer xt 45960 at 800 333 4542 case # k3094095 kia customer care to find out when I can safely put my kids in the backseat of the car.

30 Other Fuel System problem of the 2010 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 09/23/2015

My had my car about one year and it started to lose power. When I took it to dealership to fix it I had to pay for two diagnostic tests 95. 00 each. The problem was the ignition coil, spark plugs, and exhaust manifold. It is now almost exactly another year past and same problem but now dealership can't read kia codes and wants me to drive it 60 miles away with the problem still happening. The kia dealership might be able to fix but have to get the car there. I did my own diagnostic test at autozone and a repair shop. They got the codes saying ignition coil, spark plugs, exhaust manifold, and possible catlytic converter with an estimate of 1260. 00.

31 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

At approximately 40k miles the vehicle developed an annoying ping & power loss, (dead spot), when accelerating up a hill or into a corner. Dealer 1st told me that after an extensive test drive no trouble was found, however the mileage was exactly the same as when I brought car into shop, obviously test drive was not performed, had the mechanic come for a ride with me, noise was apparent immediately although mechanic did his best not to acknowledge it until I took a turn onto a steep incline where noise became quite prevalent & mechanic did acknowledge it & stated that it was the gdi pump which we then scheduled to have replaced. Shortly before my scheduled replacement the dealership changed their mind & now said that the problem was related to a carbon build up & suggested that I use top tier gas & a fuel additive @ 7,500 mile intervals, (techron was recommended), however I've always used top tier gas, mostly purchased @ shell. Dealership then decided that a fuel system flush was the way to go, which they performed @ no charge in August last year. Flus didn't help & I called dealership after traveling less than 2 miles after the flush, they told me that it would take a while for the noise to go away & the power loss to work itself out & recommended to continue using the top tier gas, as I always had & to add the techron @ prescribed intervals which I did. Noise has never gone away & power loss, (dead spot) is still prevalent, more so when warm. I contacted the dealer again in may of this year as it is getting worse, also opened a case with kia consumer care dept, which I should've done right at the onset last year. I've been told the dealership that it is a known problem & that nothing is going to fix it but they still want to do another fuel system flush which they want me to pay for. Ccd has only giving me lip service & to date nothing has been resolved.

32 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

This car has a tendency to rev up to the red line on the tach - sometimes when you start it, sometimes when you are in traffic, sometimes when you are stopped at a traffic signal. I have witnesses to this fact and it is making me feel very unsafe when I am driving it. I almost got in two accidents because of this condition. It may appear if I am driving down the highway a couple times this occured and the only way that this is remedied is turning off the ignition and restarted it, somtimes you have to do this 2 or 3 times. Other times it will happen when you start the engine it will go right to the top of the tach if you do not turn off ignition. It has also happened at a traffic light stop I felt the car increasing in revs while I was stopped, thank god I turned off the ignition before it crashed into the car in front of me. I have idea when it will occur. I looked on the web and found other instances of kia owners having the same problem. It has been back at the dealership where I purchased it, twice, new and they tell me they cannot change any parts unless the problem can be duplicated. I filed a complaint with kia on line and no response except take it back to the dealer! I want the problem repaired I do not care what they have to do to make it safe as it stands now it is a hazard to drive and an accident waiting to happen! it sometimes also feels like you have speed control as you are going down the highway it will speed up. I just want it repaired!.

33 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Not really a safety issue but maybe you can help, please. I check engine light came on telling me I;m at less than 90% efficiency relative to pollution. When the mechanic checks the co2 and other pollution requirements I'm ok. I still get great mileage and good power. The problem is the computer says the converter is off and hence can't get a sticker but the car is not polluting ?? if I lived out side a big city where they do not track this stuff there would be no problem. Ps the cost to replace the cat converter is over $1400. 00. While it us still 90% effective??? what gives please help. Thanks,.
