36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2021

I do alot of highway driving. While at speeds of 65mph and in turns, the steering wheel sticks. And feels like it pulls even harder. So I have to give it a tug in the turn or stop it from crossing into another lane. Trying the dealership again.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2020

When driving my steering wheel will stick to left and right. It happens at all speeds. I have to move the steering to keep from sticking.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2020

I have 2016 Sorento when I driving on freeway and the icon to the steering wheel comes on I need to veer to the side of the freeway and struggle because the steering wheel get hard to maunuver and find somewhere to stop so I can turn off the car and turn it back on again to the icon be removed to it would unlock the steering wheel so I can drive again. It happen very often.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2020

Issues with headlights turning off while I'm driving in the dark. Sometimes happens when I use turn signal other times just driving on a straight road in the dark country. Also transmission slips every so often but enough that passengers notice and want to know what is happening. Now car can not be shifted out of park even with foot on brake and steering will lock up and key can't be turned. Of course dealer says would cost over 1k to check it all out and even with 2 warranties nothing is covered. Please advise me what to do next. Lights have been doing this for at least 4 years. Can't remember on the trans issue for sure. Steering locking up about a year and just recently can't shift.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2020

Cannot keep vehicle going in straight line without making constant minor adjustments. Sometimes, the steering does not respond immediately to the adjustments causing the vehicle to wander dangerously close to the center line or the side of the road. It will also over correct at times causing the driver to make a more drastic correction. Due to the lack of response (intermittent), my fear is that it will fail to respond at all. I took it to the selling dealer and, after a very short drive, they said "no problem found. " we bought this car with 20,000 miles and it now has 60,000. This problem has persisted since we bought it.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

When driving the steering has resistance and can pull the car in a different direction than what you are trying to do. Then it will free up and you have more control. Also you can be turning the steering wheel and the wheels are hardly moving in the direction you are turning them to.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2020

While in motion the stearing wheel has a feel of resistance to directional control then seconds later a feeling of release of the resistance. This happens intermittently on straight sections of highway.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2020

My 2016 Sorento (ex) has sticky steering. Kia is aware of this problem and issues an upgrade to the cars computer system but it did not fix the problem. When trying to move the steering wheel, it initially sticks and requires extra force to get it to provide a steering input. Once it gets past the initial resistance, it jerks the car in the direction you are trying to go which required compensation in the other direction. Upon correction, it jerks the car in the opposite direction causing a continual need to correct the steering wheel to keep the car straight and causing the car to not be able to maintain perfectly straight travel. On large sweeping corners, this problem is even more pronounced and feels dangerous. My car is out of its bumper to bumper warranty and despite me having the car into kia dealerships twice while in warranty and the original computer "fix" not working, kia is not guaranteeing that when I bring the car back that it will be fixed under warranty. The fix for the problem is replacing the steering rack or other steering components. The sticking issue is intermittent but when it is acting up it can be felt while stationary and in motion. This intermittent issue started around 30,000 miles and continues through 70,000 miles. I believe a recall should occur to correct this potentially serious safety issue.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

10 months now I've gone with driving my 2016 kia Sorento by entering a screw driver in the override mode because I can't get out of park the moral way. I've taken this car into shawnee mission kia so many times I've lost count and they have not only refused to take care of this problem, indicating that bcm or body control moduler isn't covered under my warranty. Well let me say this they got over on me once already telling me I had to turn a claim in on the fuel pipe, and under carriage parts that I now realize was all a lie and should have been covered because kia knew about all those parts being dangerous and still stood by the it had to me hitting something under car . . It's now all surfaced via class action law suit and they still refuse to take car of my drive problem! they will not get me again and I am so frustrated that I just want them to take the car back! I'll never own another kia after this! previously purchased two brand new vehicles from them over 35,000 a car and they can't seem to find it reasonable to make car drive without a screw driver! fed up!.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2019

When driving the steering wheel will go to the left and stick ,then I will have to bring back to right or the steering will stay to the left. This has happen many times. This is a potential dangerous situation. There are multiple reports on this situation. I am concerned. . .

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2019

Steering- while driving at highway speeds the steering gets tight as if the power steering was out. When you fight to compensate it would normalize causing you to jerk the wheel. I could have easily lost control of the vehicle. Lightning- while driving at night on a dark highway all the light turned off. We were completely in thdark. We pulled over and moved the switch from automatic to the manual light on position. We later moved it back to the automatic position and it was again working properly. Both problems can easily cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2019

While driving steering has play in it which makes you correct your steering too much.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. While driving approximately 35 mph, the steering ability became very loose and the vehicle pulled to the right. The contact took the vehicle to jim shorkey kia (10785 perry hwy, wexford, PA 15090) where it was repaired for front alignment failures. The failure recurred on April 15, 2019 and was currently back at the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 26,280.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2019

Steering has a "catch" or "stickiness" at center. Causes over correcting at highway speed. The higher the speed, this stickiness increases. Unable to maintain steady lane position.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2019

The problem started around 50k miles and has become progressively worse. The problem is a sticky feeling in the steering. When making very small corrections it is like the power steering is turned off. Gentle pressure does not turn the wheel at all. As more and more pressure is applied, it is like the power steering suddenly turns on. This causes the vehicle to swerve due to over correction. The process repeats as you correct back the other direction. In fact, in a gentle turn on the highway you can let go of the wheel and the vehicle will continue to turn, the wheel never returning to center without intervening. Ultimately, the vehicle is incredibly hard to control, and I must look like a drunk swerving back and fourth in the lane. This is very dangerous especially on mountain roads or in high winds, ice, and snow. It is more noticeable on the highway, but it does it on city streets too, and I can feel that it is happening even when the vehicle is at a full stop. It was intermittent at first, but now it is dang near constant starting since about 75k. I opened a safety complaint with kia. Based on what I have read here and on blogs, kia is aware of the problem. There are 18 complaints of the same thing for the 2016 Sorento here on NHTSA and the 2017 sorenta has 89! the fix is several thousand dollars, so if the vehicle is out of warranty like mine, most people will have a hard time affording the fix. Kia needs to issue a recall before someone is injured or killed. I am documenting this here so that when it is me or my wife who dies, there is evidence of kia's negligence. I could make a video of the wheel not returning to center on the highway as evidence, but the file size and format would not work here.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

Steering is what's called notchy or sticky. When driving (whether it be straight on a city street, straight on a highway, or even on curvy roads, slow or fast) steering wheel takes effort to turn then lets go, causes over steer reaction. Dangerous. Steering even moves on its own at a complete stop. I began noticing it in January of 2019. Since then, its gotten worse.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

The steering sticks nor matter what speed I drive. It intensives with a tighter sticking of the steering wheel when driving on the highway at 60-65. To dislodge the sticking the wheel has to be turned slightly to the right, which give me an insecure feeling of not having control over the vehicle, because the car shifts to the right slightly. At height speeds this is a horrifying feeling. I've taken the vehicle to the dealership four times now. They've done the diagnostic tests the kia corporation has suggested. Problem still exists. I've been told there has been no recall, even though there have been other persons complaining about the same problem with their vehicles .

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2018

The steering on my Sorento stalls when driving at highway speeds causing overcorrection to the point of almost loosing control of the vehicle. I found many similar complaints on the internet. This is a very dangerous defect in the steeling of the vehicle. Life threating problem.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

While driving there is a notch like feeling in the steering causing a jerk in the car for simple lane corrections.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2018

I have had 4 situations where when my car is started, the dashboard warning lights vome on. On two of these 4 occasions, when I attepted to shift from park, I could not and the power locks started malfunctioning. All times the car was stationary. The dashboard reads check tpms system. The kia dealership cannot duplicate the problem so believe since they cannot duplicate the problem, there is no problem. O have provided them with the photos and video of the incidents.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

There is an issue with the electric steering on my car, it has a "catch" in the steering wheel, when you get it past that point you have over corrected and is dangerous. It makes it near impossible to hold your lane straight. Ive mentioned this to the car dealer ship kia many times and im simply told that it is normal for electric steering that I am not used to it. I have seen many many complaints about this exact issue with this make and model, seems no one is doing anything about it. This has nearly caused me to have an accident, just the slightest touch to correct this "catch" sends you one way or the other in your lane. It can be very dangerous and I feel no one is taking this seriously, should someone have to die before we check out a potential issue? my car has 20000 miles and has been doing this for about the last 6 months, did not happen when I first bought the vehicle.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2018

The steering sticks at times. Its not smooth and I have to put extra pressure on the steering wheel to get the steering to turn. This occurs when driving mostly on the highway.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

When driving at highway speed (60+mph), steering "locks" and appears to be non-responsive. It is necessary to "jerk" the wheel to "wake up" the steering to complete any correction. The vehicle veers between the lines constantly due to this action which must be repeated every 10 seconds or so. It's like driving drunk!!! passengers are jerked back and forth constantly. On trips over an hour, severe elbow cramping results from the repeated motion required to maintain vehicle in the lane. In the rain, when hydroplaning on shallow puddles on the fwy, the over correction causes severe swerving when traction is returned and overcorrection has resulted from "jerking" the wheel back "awake". Very dangerous!!! causes temporary loss of control and swerving into the next traffic lane. This is an accident waiting to happen. This condition started at about 25000 mi. And is getting worse now at 30000. More extreme by the week. Becoming difficult to drive. Dealer says everything is fine!!!.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

I have been noticing at high speeds the steering "sticks. " you have to be constantly moving the steering wheel back and forth to prevent the sticking. When mentioned to dealership, they say it's normal and don't document. I am starting to notice the sticking at losspeeds now that mileage is getting higher. This car has always done this, but getting worse.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

Has a steering control issue. I am now on my 3rd steering columm replacement. They do not correct the sticky on center steering control issues. Kia has not come up with a workable solution for this. I have had it to 3 dealers so far. They all say the steering column needs to be replaced. Now out of warranty. This car is difficult to drive and control . I have had this problem since I bought it brand new. It now has 118000 miles on it with a lot of misery driving it.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at straight at various speeds, the vehicle veered to the left or to the right independently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,120. Ss.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2015

In motion,on a straight road,on the crown or not, no wind, dry pavement---the electronic steering constantly has the driver making steering corrections. It is a small correction but constant right or left. It is impossible to hold the wheel in one position and travel that lane. Unlike my last sixty years of driving! more noticeable on the highway.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the steering wheel seized. In addition, the contact stated that the low beam head lamps were activated but lights in the vehicle failed to function, including the dome, head lamps, rear lamps and the back light for the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering console needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the failure with the lights. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000. The VIN was unavailable. Oo.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2015

While traveling at highway speeds, the Sorento constantly sways back and forth. It is extremely difficult to keep the vehicle traveling in a straight line. I took the vehicle in for this concern and they said the tire air pressure was too high, so they released some of the nitrogen from all 4 tires. I took the vehicle out again a week later on a trip and there was no change. I asked the dealer and they admitted that some of their other kia models have this same complaint by their owners and there is nothing kia can do. This is a serious safety concern.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2002

Steering has a "sticky feeling". While driving, when you try to turn steering wheel a fraction to one side or the other there is resistance and then a release which results in in oversteering that has to be corrected. When trying to correct the oversteering, there is again resistance and then release with oversteering again. So it constantly goes back and forth. There is a string of posts on [xxx] " with owners of the kia Sorento having this same issue. Not only is this annoying but also unsafe. This has been going on since about summer of 2025. I do not driver this vehicle very often or I would have gotten on this issue sooner. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
