23 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/10/2012

Summary: update to below problem I bought my Sorento in 2004, new. I replaced the coolant reservoir at 61000 miles due to overheating, replaced the low beam headlight bulbs on 4 occasions, tail lights on 2 occasions. My vehicle, 5 speed manual transmission, started to have a roaring noise approx. 6 months ago and the u-joints were replaced. It still roars. It quit running on 2-16-12 while I was driving, but restarted. It finally quit again and would not restart on 2-17-12. Check engine light indicate a fuel pressure sensor problem, but mechanic says this should not cause the problem I presently have. It has been in the shop since 2-18-12. The mechanic said it started for him. I insisted he let it run for a while and see what happens. Sure enough, it quit. Kia mechanic told me it may be a crank or cam sensor issue. Other problems--front dome light off and on at will, rear one works, clock on and off at will, vehicle hums loudly when driving for a while. It has been a reliable vehicle for the most part, but when there is an issue, it is hard to detect. Above work was completed at a cost of 1126,00. But now crankshaft bolt broke while driving costing damage to engine heads. Vehicle went back into shop and is still waiting repairs. Kia owes it customers better service and must pay repair cost and take responsibility for the faulty crankshaft bolts they provide to the mechanics .

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

Without notice this vehicle stopped accepting fuel properly. When you attempt to refuel, gasoline doesn't leak out, it sprays as if under pressure. My wife, daughter and I have each been sprayed on different occasions. Even filling very slowly causes fuel to spray from vehicle. I would be glad to video it as it occurs. It occurs every time and creates a very serious fire hazard for my family as well as other customers at the filling station. I recently had an ase certified technician evaluate the vehicle and no problem was found. This was going to be my daughters first car but I don't feel its safe for her and wouldn't want to trade it to someone and endanger them.

25 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/29/2011

When coming to a stop at a light or stop sign, usually on a slight downhill slope, the vehicle engine dies completely. It usually happens after the vehicle has be driven for 10-15 minutes, parked for 10-15 minutes then driven again for ten minutes. Once it dies I am able to start it up right away. It is a push start "key" and the car dies after I apply the brakes and am very near to a complete stop. This has happened within a few months of purchase and occurs randomly, every few months. It has happened six to ten times since I purchased the car. I have brought it into the dealer at least three times and the computer comes back with no codes. They can't replicate it and do not know what to fix. Today, the dealer installed a monitor for me to use for two weeks to see if it happens and we can capture the info in real time. Kia manufacturer customer service was abominable. I am trying to get a field technician to look at it and communicate with the dealer.

29 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/07/2009

My 2003 kia Sorento kept losing antifreeze and to find out the reservoir had a crack in it. Also, after I purchase bridgestone fire destination tires a year later they were worn after spending $600. 00 I had to have two of them replaced within a year. P245/70r16. Also 2 defects recalls when my car was put in the shop one from 2007 sc073 and sc072 when my check engine light came on. It was still on after the car was supposedly fixed by quirk kia in braintree. When I was driving out of the parking lot the check engine light was still on. I was told the car was fine and it was just a sensor and to fix it the cost would be over $200. A year later, I brought it to get a sticker, they rejected my for another recall that should have been fixed when I brought it in last year. The recall was from 2005. Now I am trying to contact the dealership because of the inconvenience of me going to get this fixed when it should have been taken care of last year. I will never buy a kia again, the dealership does not care about their cars or customers.

31 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/27/2008

My 22 yr son. Was driving a kia Sorento, at highway speed on 11/27/08 on I-10 w in houston, TX, just east of loop 610. The vehicle was a rental from enterprise rental car and had CA. 4000 miles on the odometer. My son reports hearing a loud boom from the engine compartment and immediately noticed smoke coming from the dashboard vents. He immediately pulled the vehicle over to the median shoulder and exited the vehicle, noticing dark smoke coming from the hood, then flames. He promptly called 911. The operator said she had his vehicle fire on the overhead highway camera. My son is a culinary student and rapidly retrieved his valuable knife roll from the rear seat floorboard, but was unable to get anything else from the vehicle because of the heat and smoke. He says the fd arrived within 5 mins and doused the engine fire. There was extensive fire damage to the front passenger compartment and less so to the rear passenger compartment. My son is Smart, quick and agile. Thus, he suffered no physical injury, but was quite distraught. He will do well. I am an emergency physician with 20 yrs of experience. I have very serious concerns regarding this apparent catastrophic failure that rapidly resulted in an engine and vehicle fire. It is apparent that a definitely adverse outcome, including serious injury and/or death could result if the occupants were elderly or a family with children in proper restraints, booster or infant seats. Additionally, my son reacted rapidly and immediately pulled over. Another tragic scenario could occur if there were a narrow or no shoulder. Thank you for your review and action.
