1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2026

Catastrophic engine failure, no oil, over 3 qts low, oil light did not come on, 4 cylinder had no compression. In summary: on [xxx] oil light came on, how? I just had oil change on 7/28/25. Stopped to check oil, it was dry. Bought 5qts at walmart, put 3 qts in. Checked oil every day, started keeping 5qt jug oil in car. 9/1/25 took in to have checked for oil leak/oil change, no leak detected. Continued checking oil consumption everyday, adding oil all the time. . . Purchased 5 qts - 5 times between August & November 2025. On 11/21/25 took to auto shop my maxcare extended service plan sent me to for a few minor checks, including to check again for oil leak. There was no leak found but they did need to replace valve cover gasket - engine valve cover. Continued to check oil, added when low as needed. On [xxx] driving on highway, about 15 minutes at approx. 75-80 mph, started losing speed, had to really press on gas pedal to keep going, felt some vibration underneath engine maybe (?), engine light came on, I got off exit, went through intersection, car barely made it, pulled off on shoulder. Called for tow truck, it was cold, after waiting a while I turned car on to get some heat but the heat was not working. Auto shop car was towed to had to add 3 qts of oil to do diag test. Po304cylinder 4 misfire, po303cylinder 3 misfire. . . No compression on cylinder 4. No signs of visible oil leak(s). * had car towed to gerald kia dealer, naperville, IL their diagnostic test only indicated that spark plugs need to be replaced and recommend that I get a 3 part carbon body cleaning, at my expense. I told the service tech I would be right up there to see manager. He told me to first send him all my receipts for oil & oil changes, and he will see what he can do. Didn't hear back. Went there in person 1/9/26. Manager told me that his tech "forgot" to do one test, I waited 1/2 hour, those results did indicate engine needs to be replaced. But, kia is not paying for it. . . . . 2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2025

Awd lock engaged but not functioning and no error lights indicating the such. This made the vehicle slip aggressively on lightly snowed roads. Once parked it needed to be winched out as only the front wheels spun, not engaging the rear tires.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2025

While driving on the parkway with my child and younger cousin in the vehicle, the car unexpectedly began to decelerate without warning. I safely pulled over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. When attempting to restart it, the engine would not crank or turn on. Moments later, smoke began to appear from under the hood. Additionally, the engine, battery, and oil warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. This incident created a dangerous situation and raised serious safety concerns regarding the reliability of the vehicle.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2025

*component or system: power window system / electrical system *what happened? the manufacturer issued a recall for a defect in the power window system. When I brought my vehicle to the authorized service center, I was informed that the recall repair applies only to the front power windows, even though the same malfunction and defect are clearly present in the rear windows as well. The manufacturer’s refusal to include the rear windows leaves the defect only partially remedied, which could pose a continuing safety risk. This appears to be an incomplete or inadequate recall repair, as all four windows share the same design and failure pattern. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether the manufacturer’s limited repair scope meets federal recall requirements. *when did this happen? October 2025 the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes – the dealership confirmed the issue with all four windows but stated that only the front windows are covered under the recall. The vehicle been inspected by the manufacturer or dealer? yes – inspected at nalley kia 7849 mall pkwy, stonecrest, GA 30038 *were there any injuries, fires, or crashes? no *additional details / attachments-I can provide copies of the recall notice, service invoice, and correspondence with the dealership confirming the limited repair coverage upon request.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2025

I recently paid out of pocket for replacement of hydraulic electronic control unit and I see that it was a recall on my make model and year, but my VIN number was not included in the recall.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2025

The front passenger side locking latch is getting stuck when trying to unlock with the key fob. It has to be opened manually from the inside for the door to unlock.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2024

On November 8, 2024 a large oil leak was noticed where the kia Sportage had been parked. When the oil was checked it was empty. There had been no warning lights prior to this occurring and I have always provided maintenance to this vehicle. The car was towed by aaa to a local kia dealership the next day. Their technician found "leaking severe due to oil pressure switch shooting oil through the main wiring harness and to the injector harness". The repair cost was estimated at $6,148. 94. I was told that my warranty would not cover this expense even though I have only 70,875 miles. I have not received a notice from kia indicating a recall or advising that I will receive extended warranty coverage. Research has shown that many kia vehicles and others have had this same oil pressure switch problem. This malfunction is extremely dangerous since I drive often on interstate highways and could have been involved in a major breakdown with possible accident. Kia needs to pay for this repair.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2024

Kia has a problem with window motors and regulators why is this not a safety issue. The car made in 2015 and 2016 which is this 2017 model apparently has this issue they sent out memos to dealers yet are charging people to have them fixed. This is the second time I had the motor replaced in 2021 on this very window but it was under warranty then. This should be a safety issue and be addressed.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2024

I have had this car not even two years and until 8 months ago I never had issues but now it has been burning/draining the engine oil like crazy. I mean every three days I have to put about 4 quarts with how bad it goes. I've already checked for leaks and anything burning from the exhaust and there's nothing. I've called kia and they want me to pay $200 just for them to diagnose it and not fix anything. It puts me and my sisters safety on the line because it jerks whenever it is low and then whenever it is idle. This hasn't been recreated/replicated by a dealer as I don't have the funds for them to check. There aren't any warning lights or sensors telling me anything. It's gotten to a point where I'm just not sure what else to do and I've done research where in the past, this car specifically has this kind of problem yet it shows no current recalls of it.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2024

All the windows in the car do not go up and down, I can hear the motor moving but no movement with the windows. Started with the rear passenger window, then front passenger, followed by rear driver and ultimately driver window.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2024

The vehicle has had recurring drivability problems since at least June 2024, including repeated check engine light illumination and severe loss of acceleration. On 06/19/2024, dealership service records document that the check engine light was on and the vehicle would not accelerate past 40 mph, and the check engine light was flashing. More recently, while driving on the interstate at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power and dropped speed, forcing me to pull over on the side of the road for safety. This created a dangerous situation and risk of collision. The problem continues despite multiple service visits. A dealership service visit on 06/05/2025 documents stored diagnostic trouble code p0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold), but the dealership stated no further repairs were recommended and no repair was performed. This issue is recurring and creates a serious safety hazard due to sudden loss of power while driving. Vehicle: 2017 kia Sportage VIN: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2024

While driving on the highway, vehicle lost all electrical power. The engine stayed running, but I lost use of anything electrical including the power steering, headlights, and dashboard functions. Vehicle power resumed after about a minute and we made it home, but the vehicle would not start after this. After calling our kia dealership they advised taking the vehicle in immediately via tow. After looking through the vehicle, it was found that a fuse inside of the battery harness had melted. This caused the battery cable to heat up to ~200 degrees. The cause is still unclear, but we worry about this happening in the future. We are still waiting for the cable to be replaced at this time.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2024

Window regulator drum or window regulator not responding saw open recall but my VIN isn’t comming up under the recall sa-148 service from 2020.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2023

I was driving home on I-91 s when my car started smoking from under the hood. There were no warning lights and the temperature gauge read normal with the lever at the center. I pulled off at the next exit and parked in a parking lot. I popped the hood and found that a fire had started around the engine. The fire grew to the point that the whole front half of the car was burned before the fire department was able to put it out. The vehicle was assessed by my insurance, but I think the extent of that was to determine whether it was a total loss (which it obviously was).

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

Four window regulators failed within a few days of each other. The first front widows failed at the beginning of December 2023 and the back two failed a week later. The back windows dropped down while I was driving. Thankfully, no children were in the backseat. There was no warning that this was going to occur. The regulators are independent of each other yet all four broke. The windows lost all power and could not be rolled up. I was not able to roll up any of my windows until I paid to have them fixed at a kia dealership in April. This was a safety issue (theft, unpredictable windows falling, heat inside the car, extreme cold temperatures couldn't be blocked out, etc. ) until they were fixed at a costly price-$2,168. Two kia service advisors confirmed the four window regulators and/ or drums needed replaced. The service advisor was aware of the problem on other vehicles and was not surprised at that all four independent regulators broke. The four regulators have been fixed therefore I do not have the failed/broken part. I have my service record however. I contacted kia headquarters to request a recall be made on their defective product but they were not responsive. I was given a case # but nothing else.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2023

My daughter and I were driving home from my brother's house, when we stopped by mcdonald's to grab food, we noticed our car smoking really bad. I had her pull away from the drive-thru and into the empty parking lot. We got out just seconds before the car burst into flames from underneath the hood of the car.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2023

"I am reporting a catastrophic engine failure (rod knock/bearing failure) in my 2017 kia Sportage, consistent with the theta ii gdi defect. The failure caused a sudden loss of motive power while in traffic, creating a significant safety risk. Furthermore, I am reporting bill Dodge kia (westbrook, me) for safety negligence. On September 26, 2023 (at 83,611 miles), this vehicle was in their service bay for brake work. Despite the vehicle being under an active hecu fire risk recall (sc206) and requiring the ksds product improvement campaign, the dealership failed to perform these safety updates or disclose them to me. When confronted, dealership management (alex pinto, bob colton, and patrick demers) explicitly stated it was 'not their responsibility' to inform customers of known defects or active recalls. This practice left me driving a vehicle with a known fire risk and a documented engine defect for over two years without my knowledge, ultimately leading to the current engine failure. ".

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2023

I was driving on the freeway and my car suddenly jolted, smoked started pouring from the hood, and then immediately caught fire once I pulled off the road within minutes. There were no warnings, no engine lights, nothing that pointed to an issue until this happened. I was at risk of getting hit by others in the freeway — I luckily was able to get to the side of the road and immediately called 911. Fire department came within minutes, and dowsed the car, which was fully engulfed in flames.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2023

Engine burns for an excessive amount of oil. The transmission stopped working.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2023

1/2/2023 – my car turned on with zero issues. When I went to pull out of my parking space, the car stalled and tuned off. Right before it turned off, the check engine light and oil light flickered. I waited 5 minutes and turned the car on. It turned on with none of the warning lights flickering or staying on. I pulled the car back into the parking space and the engine had a clicking noise. My husband popped the hood and checked the oil and it seemed low. We went in our other vehicle and purchased oil. We inserted 1qt of oil and turned the car on. It turned on with zero issues but the engine had a clicking noise. We called the kia dealership but it was too late to take the vehicle to them so decided we would do it the next day. 1/3/2023 – we called roadside and the car was flat bedded to the kia dealership. We spoke with the advisor nick and he asked for us to give him to Friday 1/6/2023 to look at the car and he would call us back. So we waited to Friday to 1/6/23 to speak to nick. 1/6/2023 – nick called us and told us the car might possibly need a new engine. Did not tell us how they came to the determination or what was wrong with the car and engine. He just said that the dealership needed to talk to kia corporate and kia engineers for the next course of action and that he would call us back on Wednesday 1/10/2023. So, we wait again patiently til 1/10/2023. 1/10/2023 - nick calls us and we demand to know what is wrong with the vehicle and that we need a loaner. We can not be without the car. He tells us that they do not have a loaner and that they are a small dealership. He told us the techs ran a bcd test on the car and that it failed it twice. That they were waiting to speak to kia corp and the engineers again for the next course of action. He said the car had low oil. How could that be we asked – it was only 2k miles in from the last oil change. No answers provided.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2022

Engine seized twice randomly while driving. Turned car off and back on and it ran without issue. (may 21 2022 and June 30 2022). Had the recall addressed on July 9 and July 12 my check engine light came on. It was towed to kia and they called the following day saying they’re replacing the engine under the extended warranty.

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

I purchased my car in September 2017 and in or around July 2022 my front passenger window would not open. In the next few months the back passenger windows and front driver-side window as well. After taking it to benson kia on 4/17/23 they told me that for 1 its a good will repair and only for the front windows on 4/22/23 I received a call saying that they declined the repair due to mileage on the car which is roughly around 94,000 miles. I will be lookin into getting an attorney for this issue since this is not normal wear and tear for this vehicle after 5 years and I have vehicles that are almost over 10 years older and are not having any issues of the sort. After research, I have found a class action lawsuit for the windows for 2016 and 2017 optima and Sportage models on carcomplaints. Com.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2022

Window again have to have motor replaced passenger side front dusted all four of them a year and a half ago.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2022

I purchased my 2017 kia Sportage new with 0 miles. Since day one I have had multiple electronic related issues with this automobile. The speedometer sometimes doesn't display speeds, the bluetooth connection turns on and off randomly. The air conditioning system sporadically works. If the air conditioning is turned on it will blow hot air and then sporadically turn on and off by itself. I have noticed that the bluetooth connection turns off when the air conditioning system turns on. I have called kia customer service and they deny any problems with my kia or any other 2017 kia Sportage, yet I located a technical service bulletin from kia issued in 2019 that calls for the replacement of the entire air conditioner system. When I spoke to kia about the technical service bulletin, they claimed that individual dealers are allowed to issue those bulletins without kias knowledge. I have brought my kia to the local dealer several times and they claimed that there is nothing wrong with the air conditioning system or the electric systems.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2022

The passenger door behind the driver's seat will not open, which limits access to the rear passenger compartment should there be an emergency. No lights indicate this problem. We have tried all the troubleshooting instructions from the manufacturer's manual. . Read more...

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2022

My vehicle was stolen in the middle of the day while locked through the rear window. There is now $8,000 worth of damage to it including the windows, ignition, body. I have since learned that there is a flaw in the way that kia designed the vehicle that makes is extremely easy to steal.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2022

Check engine light came on after I exit the ramp getting onto I-75. The vehicle started to stall. The vehicle started making a jerking move as though it was loosing power. I had to pull over in the side of the highway. I turned off the vehicle for about 5 minutes and turned it back on. I pull back onto the highway and noticed that when I press the gas it started repeating the same as I stated before and it wouldn’t accelerate pass 65 mph. When you slow down to about 20 mph and press the gas it stalls really bad as though it’s about to cut off. The acceleration hands jumps back and forth between 1 and 2 when pulling off.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2022

Unreasonable amount of engine oil decreasing. When I drained engine oil after 5000 miles of driving, less than 1/2 of 5qt jug was filled. It could eventually result engine fire due to loss of lubrication on engine.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2021

The car is manufactured in such a way that it is easy to steal without a key. When a car is stolen, typically it is driven recklessly putting many others at risk. Also any child or animal in the car could be taken as well as needed possessions of the owner. The problem has been recognized by the manufacturer and several police departments. The problem became well known to the manufacturer, however, the manufacturer neglected to ever notify individuals who purchased their vehicles. This can be verified by any large police department. Some of these would include: milwaukee, denver and multiple others. There is no warning that this is a problem in the vehicle you own. The manufacturer or dealer would have to notify such as they do in a recall.
