I am filing this complaint regarding a catastrophic engine failure on my 2017 Land Rover Discovery hse luxury with the 3. 0l v6 supercharged engine. The failure was caused by a broken timing chain, which resulted in severe internal engine damage. This component failure has been confirmed by an independent Land Rover specialist, and the damaged parts — including the broken chain — are available for inspection upon request. The incident put our safety at risk, as the vehicle experienced sudden loss of engine power while in operation. A complete engine stall, especially in traffic or at highway speeds, could easily lead to loss of power steering and braking assistance, significantly increasing the chance of an accident. Prior to the failure, we noticed several warning signs, including an illuminated check engine light, rough idling, and multiple diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs), such as p0018, p0019, p0300, p0304, p0305, and p0306. These symptoms began appearing a few weeks before the engine failed completely, but escalated quickly. To our knowledge, there is no recall or technical service bulletin (TSB) addressing this known issue on this model and engine configuration. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Land Rover, the police, or any insurance agency, but the independent mechanic confirmed that the failure was internal and directly related to the timing chain system. We are submitting this report in the interest of public safety, as this type of failure on a vehicle with regular maintenance and 140,000 miles should not occur without warning. We believe this may indicate a broader reliability issue with the timing system in these engines and urge the NHTSA to investigate.

Had engine cooling system repaired at dealer in 2023. In late 2024/early 2025 - engine coolant loss returned. We maintained engine coolant at recommended levels until we could get vehicle into dealership for diagnosis and repair. During routine local trip, low coolant light suddenly came on and immediately following that, engine stopped in the middle of traffic. Wife was barely able to navigate vehicle to safe place alongside the road. Vehicle was towed to dealer. They diagnosed engine failure due to oil cooling system failure. We contacted jlr and they offered no solutions. This is a $40,000 repair on a vehicle worth at most $20 to $25,000 retail. We had to dispose of it to a salvage buyer at an extreme loss.
The contact owns a 2018 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the battery warning illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled several seconds after the battery warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to coast into a parking lot and the vehicle was taken to a parts store where a new battery was purchased. The contact installed the battery however, the vehicle stalled again. The contact left the vehicle on the side of the road. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by a dealer or independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 106,331.

Driving down the highway at night in the rain and car died completely. . . All electronics shut off, car shut off and had no power to steering or breaks or anything. Would not start once it was pulled over and had to be towed to dealer. At the dealership I was told the leaking windshield had eroded the wiring throughout. They could not start or power the car at all. They removed the complete interior and have had the car for 45 days with no estimate of when it is drivable again.

This particular vehicle comes with a plastic coolant water outlet. When the plastic melts, it causes the coolant system to fail, and the engine will overheat. The plastic can only withstand heat up to 200 degrees fahrenheit. Most engines run at 195-220. There was no reason for the manufacturer to use this type of plastic. Over 1,000 aftermarket coolant water outlets have been sold as a replacement for the manufacturer's part. There is a class action lawsuit for the faulty coolant water outlet. [xxx] v. Tata motors group, Jaguar Land Rover limited, and Jaguar Land Rover north America llc. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
On may 18, 2024 at approximately 4pm, my husband turned on my 2019 Land Rover Discovery from a cold start after sitting parked for about 20 minutes. We heard a slight rattle upon start-up, so he turned the car ignition off. He restarted the car after about a minute and we did not hear the rattle. We began driving the car and after about 2-3 miles, the car started shuddering and began slowing down but did not completely stall. My husband turned off the car again and we waited for a couple of minutes and he restarted the car. It drove fine for about a mile and began shuddering/hesitating again as we were driving. Then the car made a loud warning sound, a warning light flickered on the dash and the engine completely turned off as we were driving. We were in the middle of traffic and had we been on the freeway, there would have been catastrophic consequences as the engine completely stopped. We thankfully were able to coast to a side-street on our immediate right and stopped. The engine would not turn over and my husband was unable to restart the car. I immediately made an appointment with my local Land Rover dealership for 3 days later (next available) and had the truck towed there. After inspection, they told me they believed the main bearing in the engine failed due to an oil pump failure and that the engine would need to be replaced. My truck is 5 years old and has less than 100,000 miles (only about 80k). No previous warning lights! a car this expensive and with so few miles with regular maintenance service being performed by either Land Rover or aaa, shouldn’t need a new engine. This is after I’d had the camshaft adjuster/timing chain replaced in this truck by the same dealership only 3 months prior! after speaking to the service person, he informed me that 2 other Land Rovers were sitting in the dealership waiting for the same engine and waiting for 4-5 months to be delivered from the manufacturer with no eta! known, dangerous problem! please help resolve!.
The contact owns a 2020 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the navigation system screen went blank. the vehicle randomly failed to start. The Land Rover logo was on the screen. While driving, the battery warning light was flashing. All the warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who performed an update. The dealer was unable to determine the failure. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While driving ,after a few days the vehicle failed to start. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 38,181.

I was driving on a very busy road in portland when my engine suffered catastrophic failure and seized the engine. This was due to a defect in the crankshaft. My family and I are lucky this didn’t happen at speed on a highway. Land rover has failed to acknowledge a problem despite thousands of people experiencing the same. This resulted in a 26k bill. I just found out I could report my experience so I am now. Research has uncovered this is a common problem and a safety concern for many others as well. . Read more...
I have purchased this vehicle from carmax which was sent in by way of the texas store to georgia October 31, 2022. It has only been a year and since I have had the vehicle the engine light kept coming on I took it back, they reset it it came back on I have extended warranty on the vehicle and they are trying to charge me to fix the issue because they do not have the tools to fix it and it has to go to an authorized Land Rover dealer service department. Oil is leaking from the vehicle which it should not be and they want to charge over $6000 to fix it.
Driving down the highway, the vehicle all the sudden started smoking, forcing me to pull over. Upon pulling over, I found it was a fire under the left front hood based on the smoke pouring out. I called 911 immediately. I attempted to save some belongings, including my $200k boat, but failed to save anything as the fire rapidly grew forcing me to step far away. I then watched my car, boat and belongings all perish to nearly nothing before the fire department arrived and put out the fire. While I am lucky to be safe and have adequate insurance, others may not fair so well when their Land Rover Discovery 5 petrol catches fire.
The contact owns a 2018 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic and the engine sensor was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the to the local mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the timing chain was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Was driving on wa-18 highway going to snowqualmie falls with my family. Suddenly I heard a snap from the front and at the same moment the car start shaking from the front so I slowed down trying to go to the right lane so I could stop when I see a chance because I was in an area where there is no emergency curve. The car died couple of seconds after the snap and because the cars were going too fast on the right lane I ended up in the left lane then I saw car fumes coming from the engine area but I couldn’t exit the car for safety and made sure that I turned off the ignition and was hoping that the car will not go up in flames while im on a freeway and have my wife and my 3 kids in the car with me. A lot of traffic buildup behind me and minutes later the state patrol pushed me to the next exit. I called aaa and towed the car to Land Rover of tacoma for an inspection. After they inspected the car, they said that the timing chain was loose and the car need a new engine. At six years old only a car with 65,000 miles not supposed to have a problem with the timing chain. The dealership failed to tell me what’s the reason that the time in chain is loose because this time in chain supposed to last for a longer than 65,000 miles with no problems. I read all over the internet and everyone is complaining about the Land Rover timing chain brake or get loose with low mileage and many of these people say the car went off on the freeway and put them on a dangerous situation just like what happened with me and my family.
Low coolant warning came on. Topped off coolant with no leak visible under vehicle. Warning came back a week later. And leak was now visible. Vehicle towed to dealer and discovered bad water pump and hoses. Dealer cannot fix vehicle for last 5 weeks due to back ordered heater manifold tube. Under 45k miles and unusable. Dealer advised leak on belts requires them to be replaced. No global eta on parts.
Vehicle warning lights come on including traction control and engine warning. Vehicle stops running after halting and then quits running completely. I had the vehicle towed 80 miles to the nearest dealer in columbia, SC they reported that it was a loose ground wire on the battery and told me it was resolved. Less than a month later the same thing happened again and all 4 wheels locked up requiring the towing company to drag it onto the flat bed two truck. It was towed to the local dealer in hardeeville, SC for repair last Friday and am waiting on a notice that they are working on the vehicle. I did report the issue to the local dealer prior to the latest event and was told that the earliest available appointment was a month out. I was not told of any recall by either dealer but was told that they are having the same issue with “so many cars” the first event was on September 13th and the second on October 14th.
Salrtbbv0ha016538-VIN 2017- Discovery failed water pump detective -requesting a recall dear safety dept, the vechicle stop in the middle of the road and did not start back up. The windshield failed allowing rain water to pool in the floorboards of the vehicle. The electronics were destroyed, the damage done was well above $20,000. 00. Land rover didn’t take any responsibility as it was 40 days outside of warranty. The car had less than 40,000 miles on it. Likely my insurance kicked in and declared the vehicle a total loss.

Bought car last may, 2019, and within four months was back and forth to the dealership for repairs. Water got inside my vehicle from the front windshield with water everywhere inside, including the dashboard, screen and main console. Dealership said it was from the window recalls, but mine never was recalled. They said the seals where faulty. Faulty engine O2 sensor (three faulty codes) right when I was driving back from my windshield repair. Turned around and dropped car back off. Camera system fault message was on the screen. They claim nothing was wrong. This was after water got into my car. Basically, I'm just waiting for the next thing to happen with my car with so much water getting inside the cabin and main console area. Dealership said they can do nothing about it as everything is working now. Vehicle was sitting outside when water got inside. When other items happened, I was driving. These happened on June of 2019, September of 2019 and November 0f 2019.
I was driving on main road at the speed limit (45 mph). I had slowed down as I observed a car pulling out ahead of me onto the road. As I gave my vehicle gas in order to get back up to speed, I felt a pause in the engine and then the car completely lost power- the engine stopped, the red battery icon appeared on the dash, and message appeared on the screen with the heading "special program suspended" or something to that effect-- I had no time to read that message as I had to steer my car as far to the right as I was able to. I tried to restart the vehicle, it would not start and the message disappeared-- I had no chance to read it as I was on a busy and heavy traveled road and had to ensure I was safely pulled over. Unknown at this time as to what caused this malfunction. This created an unsafe condition as the car lost power with no forewarning. I am lucky that it did not happen on the highway on which I travel most of the time. I contacted Land Rover roadside assistance and the car was put on a flatbed and brought to the dealer.

There is a dangerous throttle lag when accelerating from a rolling stop. Many users have nearly had accidents like me. You press throttle and it does nothing for like 2 seconds then suddenly engine picks up. . . Its a gasoline v6 engine so its not turbo lag. . . . And when you are actually stopped and accelerate its just fine. Its just when slowly rolling its extremely dangerous!!!.
Laggy acceleration at "rolling stop" speeds of 2-10 mph. 2-4 second delay merging into traffic or turning into traffic. No amount of accelerator will alleviate the lag. Supercharged v6 gas engine.
Accelerator has a significant "lag" when going from a moving "stop". As if when your turning and want to accelerate. This is a known problem with lr and they have been working on a software fix for months. It is dangerous!!.

Ascending minimal inclines while 55mph and above, engine misfires resulting in loss of power and inability to accelerate, as substantiated by similar NHTSA complaint #: 603676 "an english car specialist in raleigh, nc. Determined it was a speed sensing transmitter. This device tells the car's computer how fast the car is moving. While driving 60 mph, it was getting a signal of 130 mph. Thinking it was moving too fast, the car will automatically misfire in an effort to slow it down. They replaced the speed sensor (for $120) and the problem was fixed. This is a common problem for older lrs and the dealers should know this. They use it as an opportunity to charge for a much more expensive valve job. ".
