Lexus ES owners have reported 33 problems related to vehicle speed control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Lexus ES based on all problems reported for the ES.
The vehicle's speedometer shows an inaccurate reading, up to 7mph less than the actual speed. This has been verified multiple times, measured against waze and a speedometer app. At lower speeds, I. E. , less than 30mph, the divergence between the speedometer and the true speed is 1-3mph. At medium speeds, between 40-60mph, the divergence is 5-7mph. At highway speeds, the speedometer initially shows the same larger divergence but after several minutes starts to converge to within 1-2 mph of the apps. The convergence disappears shortly after the vehicle slows down. The vehicle was brought into the dealership for repair but they said nothing was wrong. At that time, I was provided a loaner vehicle of the same make and model, and its speedometer matched waze perfectly at all speeds. I then contacted Lexus customer service, who opened up a case number. I uploaded photos and videos to Lexus documenting the problem. Lexus has now advised me by telephone (representative was "israel") that they have closed the case based on what the dealer said, and further, that they will not recognize or rely on a third-party application such as waze. They refused to provide me with an email or letter confirming this; all I have is a screenshot of the Lexus support platform showing the case has been closed. I believe this is a serious safety issue, and I am shocked that Lexus refuses to acknowledge or repair this. I have attached the photos provided to Lexus, screen shots of the two Lexus support cases, both stating "case closed", and the Lexus dealer invoice showing that the problem was brought to their attention (page 3 of the invoice). I am unable to upload the videos (2 x 1 minute long, one on a city street and one on an interstate) as they are larger than your system allows. If you can provide an alternate method to upload them I will be happy to do so. The vehicle is available for inspection and testing at your convenience. I hope your agency can assist with this issue.

I ran my car’s left front corner into a concrete pillar at about 5 mph, put it in reverse and then the car engine sounded as if it was accelerating and it moved backward at a rapid pace. I put my foot on the brake, no response, then put gear shifter into drive, no response, put shifter in neutral, no response, then rear left corner of my vehicle rammed into a concrete pillar/metal window frame. I then turned the vehicle off, restarted and drove away. I did not put my foot on accelerator to cause the rapid engine acceleration.

I was driving down the highway coming up on a traffic jam put on the brakes and several warning. Lights came on the dash and my power brakes failed. I was barely able to stop the car without hitting someone. From that point forward the brakes did not work properly, the regenerative braking system did not function. Also, the cruise control stopped functioning. I took the car to the Lexus dealer, they tested the car and stated it need a new brake booster brake assembly and that there was a safety warranty issue that was extended out 10 years and up to 150,000 miles and although my car only had 79,000 miles on it was three months past the warranty date and the refused. They reset the car brakes apparently and I was able to drive the car for several days while I spoke with Lexus, and then the car brakes failed again.

The first incident occurred sometime in late June/early July. . . Indicator lights mentioned below came on and I cleaned off sensors and indicator lamps disappeared on this occurrence. On July 13 2022, I was driving on a busy local road when the following malfunction indicators were displayed: brake system warning, 'check' engine malfunction indicator lamp, electric power steering system warning, parking support brake system, and pre-collision system. As these indicators were displayed, simultaneously the vehicle decelerated to an almost complete stop on the road (though I was pressing gas pedal to floor) and then to a complete stop as I was able to blessedly pull over to a gas station without getting hit (the car sounded like putt, putt as it shut down). The vehicle would not start even though I cleaned off the sensors this time. . . I sat for about 15-30 minutes and the vehicle restarted and resume normal operations until I was able to get home safely. This happened again on 15 July 2022 while I was driving on I-75n, a truly busy interstate, I was switching lanes to get to the far right lane when all of a sudden, the aforementioned indicator lamps displayed and the vehicle decelerated to a complete stop as I was able to pull over onto the shoulder of the highway. . . I believe since I had a family member following me, that definitely kept an accident from occurring along with the oversight of the good lord. While we sat and waited for tow services, I tried wiping the sensors to no avail. . . Yet, upon 30 minutes of waiting, the vehicle restarted and resumed normal operations. I drove vehicle to an auto shop in which they did a vehicle diagnostics check and couldn't find anything wrong. . . They even drove vehicle to see if problem would reoccur but to no avail.

When you drive it speeds up very fast then it goes back down then it startles when you try to put your foot on the gas then once you take your foot off the gas it goes back to normal speed it's like it gets stuck but then once you release it goes and sometimes you can't go above the speed.

Since I bought the car in oct 2019, this happens everytime I am on local roads (speed <50mph), when I slowdown per the traffic flow, or taking turn (left or right) after yielding, the car hesitates to accelerate as if the gas pedal died on me and then I push the pedal further down only to get the car downshift drastically and revving up to almost always about the hit the car in front (if any) of me. In the few times I am on highway, when I need to speed up to change the lane the car accelerates unpredictably making the driving a scary experience.
When driving at 60mph, after removing foot from gas pedal, vehicle will continue to maintain a speed of 40mph. Have to apply brakes to slow car down.

I was in my car, motor running, facing traffic ,stopped at edge of driveway, with foot on brake, waiting for traffic to clear. Suddenly car started to accelerate. I reflexibly pressed on brake with maximum force. Car continued very slowly. I pulled out of gear to neutral which stopped car. Car traveled no more then 1 car length to stop next to curb. After a pause, I proceeded to drive to stops over 4 hours, I then drove home. The next morning I called and left message with NHTSA and the car manufacturer. The latter has had a dealer inspect and found no problem. I requested another dealer opinion. Manufacturer offers $500 for another inspection but denys any support for cost of solution. Can NHTSA review this situation for manufacturer's need to recall? this same car and model had accelerator problems in 2007 resuilting in several fatalities.
In a commercial parking lot, I shifted from r to d to exit a parking space and, with my foot on the brake pedal, my Lexus suddenly sped forward and rammed a parked car, driving it into a 3rd car.

I was parking my car on a commercial complex. I am pressing on the brake as the car slows down. When I further pressed on the brake, the car instead of taking a complete stop, accelerated. It hit the building in front of me. When trying to back up, it accelerated again in reverse. I pressed the brake really hard then it stopped.
Driving out of my garage usually slowly and when I put my foot on the gas while in reverse to pull out the car just flew out into the street. The immediately tried to brake and couldn't work. When I hit a truck in the street behind me the car finally stopped. I had no control. This never happened before, a first time and a very frightening experience. The car is at the Lexus authorized body shop waiting for the Lexus inspector to go over the car. I would be afraid to drive this car in the future thinking this could happen again anytime. I'm the original owner and felt this is the best car I ever owned until now.

Vehicle has the "hesitation on accelerating" or "throttle lag" problem which is documented on many models of both Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Vehicle hesitates when accelerating from stop light, slowing to make a turn, or in traffic when slowing and then accelerating. It is unresponsive for 1-2 seconds then accelerates fast. This is Especially dangerous when crossing a busy uncontrolled intersection. Occurs routinely when driving everyday. This hesitation is dangerous, not normal, and is a safety issue that needs addressing by the manufacturer.
While stopped at a traffic light, with my foot on the brake pedal, the car lurched forward. I was able to maintain control by pressing firmly on the brake pedal. This has happened 3 times in the last 2 weeks. The 1st 2 times, I thought it might be me, maybe my foot slipped had off the brake pedal and hit the accelarator pedal. Today, however, that notion was dispelled. I was paying attention to my foot location on the brake pedal, my foot being firmly on the brake pedal, when the car lurched forward of it's own accord.

I was driving slowly up an aisle in a parking lot and spotted a shady place on my left just next to a car already parked. I moved in slowly at 90degree angle to set the car into the parking space with my foot already on the brake. I pressed down the brake further as the car was about to be at the right place. Suddenly, the car accelerated at what seemed full throttle into a brick retaining wall 9-10 feet in front of me. The car backed down in the parking space where it immobilized. The acceleration was sudden and uncontrolable. The airbags didn't go out. The shock against the wall resulted in the front of the car being damaged and a passenger I had in the front seat (we both had our belts on) got a compression fracture to the lower spine and has been bedridden ever since.
My vehicle accelerates periodically resulting in close-call accidents. There is no warning sign of when this is going to happen. I reported this to the dealership (heyward allen Toyota) where I brought the used vehicle in 2008. One of the salesmen drove with me around the dealership and decided there was nothing wrong with the car. I learned 24-hours after the purchase that this vehicle was in an accident prior to me purchasing it which was not revealed. I am concerned that I am putting my life as well as others in danger.
The contact owns a 2009 Lexus Es350. The contact stated that the vehicle intermittently accelerated upon releasing the brake pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that recently upon entering the garage, the vehicle suddenly accelerated after releasing the brake pedal, almost causing the vehicle to crash into the residence. The struck other materials inside the garage, causing front-end damages to the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the vehicle had already been repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 09v388000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.
Lexus Es350 stall or hesitation problem on 2013 model. My car frequently but intermittently hesitates when accelerating from a stop or rolling stop position. I've had it about 8 months and it has probably stalled at least 100 times. Tulsa's Lexus dealership says there's nothing wrong with it and that Lexus designed the car that way for fuel efficiency (yes, that is what they've told me, and with a straight face). My 2010 Es did the same thing, and my 2007 Es did the same thing. You'd think I would have learned my lesson by now and bought a different brand of car. This is an extremely dangerous problem when pulling out into traffic. I would not recommend a Lexus to anyone until they get this problem fixed. I was reversing and trying to turn when my car Lexus Es 300 suddenly picked up high speed acceleration by it self and went forward and hit a fence in front. The vehicle picked up unintentional high speed (full throttle). It was beyond my control. My body went forward and backward violently. For few days I have experienced muscle stiffness, pain and poor night sleep.
Ever since car was purchased @one year ago, there are occasional 1-3 second hesitations upon acceleration. These occur from dead stop or at low speeds. Two dealers have examined the computers, finding no evidence that the problem exists. They also say no other local owner has complained of a similar problem and the manufacturer reportedly has no record of such a complainant nationwide. But a number of different passengers in the car have felt the hesitation and asked what's wrong. I wish I knew and I wish Lexus knew. Since this has happened many times when I was changing lanes on a surface street or the freeway (socal) or making left/right turns with oncoming traffic, my fear is that my vehicle is going to be hit, although I am as careful as I can be when changing lanes/turning because I know at any time the car will hesitate for a few seconds. I experienced this problem noticeably, as did other owners, with previous year models, but am assured by dealers and the local district office that Lexus has solved it now. I only wish!.
At about 2:00 pm on Dec 26, 2011, while parking in a public covered garage, I turned into the parking space, positioned my car, and was about to turn off the engine when the car lurched forward, hitting the concrete wall in front of me. The passenger in my car, my 21 year old daughter, also a licensed driver, felt the car lurch and accelerate forward. Since I had reached a good parking position, I am certain that I had my foot on the break and would not have been trying to accelerate. The injury to my foot, from all indications, shows that my foot was on the break. I had it x-rayed on Dec 27 at a patient first medical facility and also was seen on Dec 28, by my family physician. He examined my foot and indicated that my ankle sprain was injured as I was breaking; it would not have sustained that injury if my ankle would have been on the accelerator.

When I accelerate, the car hesitates and actually slows down before accelerating. This is extremely dangerous when needing to avoid other cars or changing lanes or making turns.
The contact owns a 2003 Lexus 300 Es. The contact stated that the vehicle automatically accelerated while attempting to pull into a parking space. The contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle continued to accelerate. The vehicle stopped only after it jumped a curb. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, but no failure was found. The contact has the repair invoice and pictures. The current and failure mileage were 50,313.
: the contact stated while turning from a side street onto a main road and applying the brake, the vehicle engine revved. Then, while pulling into a parking space at 3 mph and applying the brake, the vehicle lunged forward and over a small embankment. The engine continued to rev for a short time. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer.
: the contact stated while driving 5 mph in a parking lot, the vehicle accelerated forward crashing into the front window of a credit union. There were no injuries; there was property damage and a police report was filed. Prior to the incident, the transmission was hesitating and lurching forward. In 2004, the dealership determined that the vehicle's computer was trying to adjust to the way he drove. Updated 8/30/2006.
On July 9, 2006 at 3:30 p. M. , I stopped at fishers foods in canton, ohio. I pulled into the parking lot from the frank rd. Side of fishers and was driving slowly with my foot on the brake to enter a parking space. The parking space was located directly across from the entrance and I turned left and eased slowly into the space with my foot on the brake bringing the car to a stop. The moment I stopped, I reached over to put the car in park and all of a sudden, the car engine surged enough to move my front wheels over the car stop in an instant with my foot still on the brake. I was totally shocked. I still had my foot positioned on the brake and pushed down. The car continued to accelerate and the back tires came over the car stop. At this point, I removed my foot totally from the brake to see if the engine would slow down naturally without any action at all by me. The engine continued to surge just as fast totally on its own. I tried the brake again and the car still did not stop. I lifted my foot from the brake again and at this point realized I was going to go into the road. I looked to the left and saw a car coming down the road a fair distance away. I then looked to the right and saw a silver Toyota with a lady driving it. I knew I was going to hit her. The collision happened and I put the brake on again and the car finally stopped. The police cited me for failure to control. As I was waiting for my husband to pick me up after the accident, he called me and told me that he had talked to my brother and that while my brother was working at Lexus, another lady had a similar accident, only hers happened when she was pulling into her garage and her engine surged and her car ran into the garage door. I thought this was kind of a big coincidence and I decided to look into it further on the internet when I got home. The information I found out about was shocking, unbelievable, and also made me very angry. The complaints are still being made on an ongoing basis.
Today my car accelerated on its own and I was not able to get it to stop by braking.
When my vehicle is immediately put in drive gear from reverse gear, foot taken off the brake and tap the gas pedal, my vehicle surges forward as if it is in full throttle. As result, my vehicle jumped the curb and impacted a brick wall. I suffered a bloody nose and a cut on my hand. The vehicle suffered frontal damage and is undriveable. I have contacted the auto manufacturer. They will tow and inspect it.
Depressing the accelerator pedal causes the vehicle to hesitate for one-half to one full second and then lurch forward, suddenly. This is a safety risk when changing lanes or accelerating to avoid a collision. The dealer's mechanic indicated (twice) that they have had problems with this model's "electronic accelerator," and that an internal computer is supposed to "learn from the drivers' habits and adjust the acceleration accordingly. " an accident can easily occur when expected power is denied upon depressing the accelerator.
The contact owned a 2003 Lexus Es. While driving at speeds of 45 mph in the rain, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact was unable to maintain control of the steering wheel and proceeded to crash into the median. The vehicle surged forward and proceeded to crash into the drivers side door of another vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact suffered major injuries as a result of the crash. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus Es330. The contact stated that upon acceleration after slowing down the vehicle will surge forward. The dealership replaced a transmission chip that was recognized in a technical service bulletin. The problem diminished for a while, but the correction did not remedy the problem. The contact stated that this did not happen every time while driving the vehicle, but enough times to cause the contact to be concerned about the vehicle. The manufacturer stated that they were declining to offer additional assistance because the vehicle was performing under normal operating characteristics for a vehicle with ecti.
I purchased a 2005 Lexus Es330 and have had consistent problems with the vehicle's acceleration and deceleration. The vehicle hesitates during acceleration and suddenly lurches forward. Also, during deceleration the vehicle suddenly slows down upon releasing the gas pedal. This has become a serious issue in heavy traffic and iã‚m concerned it may lead to an accident. I have reported the issue to the dealer on two occasions but have received a standard response that there is nothing wrong with the car. Iã‚m hoping the dot will initiate a recall and have the manufacturer fix the problem. I'm deeply concerned and shocked at the number of similar reports filed with the dot.
