Lexus GS300 owners have reported 11 problems related to front suspension lower ball joint (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
As I pulled up and made a left turn into the driveway at my parent's house, I heard a loud clunk and the car dropped to the ground and could not be moved and so it died in the middle of the residential street. I came out and found that it was my lower ball joint and it had broke off the rod was actually sheared off from the joint. I have the control joint that was broken. Lexus says that my car is not covered under the recall but I disagree and feel that this is a manufacturer defect that should have been covered under the recall. Had this broke off at highway speeds, I would have been in big trouble.
The contact owns a 1999 Lexus Gs300. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph, the entire front end dropped to the ground. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the driver's side lower ball joint would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred two months later. The vehicle was towed back to the mechanic and the passenger's side ball joint was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 163,000.

The contact owns a 1998 Lexus Gs300. While driving less than 20 mph, the contact heard a loud popping sound. The vehicle pulled to the right with tremendous force. The driver was able to maneuver the vehicle off the road and attempted to have the vehicle towed to the dealer; however, the tow company was uncomfortable with towing in fear that they would cause more damage. It was discovered that the lower ball joints were hanging from the vehicle and punctured the rim. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were less than 170,000.

98 Lexus Gs300lower ball joint dislocated itself while driving at 20mph on city streets. Luckily it wasn't on the highway. Called a towing company, and they refused to tow the Lexus Gs300 since it could cause more damage. During the whole ordeal, the lower ball joint puncture the original Lexus 16inch wheel. A hole is visible and the dislocated ball joint sits on the wheel close the edge.

Lower ball joint on the suspension came apart causing the tire to dislodge. Tire jammed against right front quarter panel causing body damage. Car is in the shop right now with estimated repair costs of $1,500. 00 excluding body damage estimates. I thank god I was only doing 15mph at the time when the day before I did a 236 mile round trip drive through highway mountain roads.

The contact is experiencing the same failure as stated in NHTSA campaign id number 99v125000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint) for the 1995-1997 Lexus Gs300. We own a 1998 Lexus, model GS 300. This Saturday my wife was driving the Lexus and the entire wheel assembly came off the vehicle due the failure of the lower ball joint. In reviewing recall information for Lexus\Toyota, it is very apparent there is an ongoing issue of quality control related to their lower ball joints. For our specific model, there was a recall in 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97 specific to this part. Given we have a 98 and a recall has not been issued (yet), the Lexus dealership refused to provide us with any accommodation towards fixing the failed part, or the resulting body damage related to the vehicle traveling down the road on only three wheel. Fortunately, we were not traveling on the highway, but a side street when this incident occurred. But moreover, regardless of our financial loss, in my opinion, this is a public safety concern.
I own a 1999 Lexus Gs300. I've heard some creaking noises coming from the front suspension leading up to the failing of my lower ball joints. Before it failed I brought it to firestone on ft. Lewis, wa to get a suspension inspection where they did not see or hear anything from my suspension. So a week later (January 15th 2007) I was driving in seattle, wa when the lower ball joint failed. The result of that was body damage due to the vehicle crashing down onto the wheel and a snapped abs sensor wire. Just to repair this vehicle to be able to drive was to replace the ball joint and new tires that all together amounted to about almost $600 dollars for a part was about $50-60 dollars. The cost of repairing my vehicle isn't an issue but this is a very serious malfunction or defected item that needs to be reviewed. I've waited to file a complaint to see the amount of people effected by this and since than there were more than a dozen instance where the ball joint has or had failed causing damage and in time will cause death or serious injury to people not aware of this problem I. E on a freeway where people can't stop in time to avoid it or the actually wheel coming off the vehicle and hitting another vehicle. Most of these instances has happened at low speeds, side streets or parking lots. Like I said before I waited to file a complaint to see the amount of people effected by it and to also compile more information. . Read more...
