1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2014 Lexus IS250

Failure Date: 12/02/2014

On Dec. 2, 2014, I was entering a walgreen's parking lot in my leased 2014 Lexus is 250, which I had owned for only 4 months with 1740 miles. Moving at 5mph or less, I turned the wheel to enter a parking space, when the car suddenly accelerated and took off. I pressed the brakes to the floor and nothing happened. The car jumped up over a planted median filled with bushes, trees and a phone pole. The front tires became lodged in mud and that stopped the car. I missed the telephone pole by less than 1 foot. Luckily, I had an individual witness the entire episode. I telephoned Lexus emergency services and Lexus customer relations immediately. The car had to be removed from the median by a tow company and was taken to the dealership where purchased. After examining the car from Dec. 3-Dec. 10, the dealership claims there is body damage but no mechanical problem with the car. The dealer called on Dec. 10 saying the car was ready to be picked up. I noted inaccurate data in the service report from what I told the service manager originally, and I was given no information as to follow-up on this matter. I was simply told that Lexus corporate had been out to see the underside damage to the vehicle. (front bumper, paint, cracks on base of bumper), and that I would hear from them in 10 days. I called Lexus corporate and was told that the matter is now in the legal dept. And that it would be far more than 10 days for a response. Rather, I could expect a call in 4/6 weeks or longer. I am now driving a leased vehicle that I am very scared to operate, not knowing when a similar incident could occur where I could be killed or injure or kill someone else. Lexus, particularly the dealership, appears to be wanting to distance themselves as far from possible from finding a suitable resolution.

3 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Lexus IS250

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

During the month of December 2013, I experienced several incidents of unintended acceleration. I also had several before December that I didn't pay much attention to. What they had in common was that the vehicle was almost stopped with my foot on the brake when I experienced a surge. In one instance, I was easing out of a strip mall parking lot onto a major highway with just the idle speed momentum moving the car with my foot on the brake. The car surged and pulled me into the roadway blindly but fortunately there were no oncoming vehicles. Happened again on March 20, 2014 with full documentation on my part.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Lexus IS250

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

I was driving my 2008 Is250 at about 40 mph on a two lane roadway when I felt the car accelerate suddenly. I took my foot off the gas pedal but it continued to accelerate to 85 mph. I immediately hit the brake but the vehicle did not stop or even slow down. I had pressed the brake pedal as far as it would go but the vehicle did not respond. The third time I pressed the brake pedal the vehicle began to slow down but would not stop. The speed slowly decreased to about 20 mph but still did not stop. Luckily there was little traffic volume but I was approaching an intersection. The car was slowing down but not stopping. Finally it came to a crawl just as the traffic light turned green. I let go of the brake and the car thrusted forward. I pressed the brake pedal yet again and the vehicle finally came to a stop. I called Lexus dealership to report the problem. They towed the car to their service center. Noone asked for specific details of the incident. It didn't seem that this type of complainant was anything new to them.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Lexus IS250

Failure Date: 08/07/2009

Wife's 2007 Lexus is 250 experienced sudden acceleration on the northbound 405 freeway in long beach California. After she accelerated onto the freeway she entered the fast lane and eased up on the gas pedal but the car continued to accelerate out of control with her foot completely off the gas pedal. She began pressing on the brake pedal in an effort to stop the vehicle, all the while the car was trying to accelerate. Luckily she was able to maintain control and moved over to the right lane, then onto the shoulder of the highway. She threw the auto transmission lever into neutral. She was then able to bring the car to a stop, even while the engine was racing at high rpm. She turned off the ignition and the engine stopped. We had the car flat-bedded to south bay Lexus in torrance, California where they gave her a loaner for the weekend and promised to have one of their mechanics drive the car over the weekend to see if they could repeat the problem. On Monday they called me and told me that they could not find anything wrong with it, telling me that more than likely the floor mat had gotten pushed up into the gas pedal mechanism. This is impossible if you look at the angle of the floor above the mats where the gas pedal is. My wife insists the mat was nowhere near the gas pedal. The dealer put a grand total of only 24 miles on the vehicle in the three days that they had it. Over the weekend my wife and I did some online research and surprisingly found a number of other people who have experienced the same problem. We traded the vehicle in on Monday, the same day we got it back from Lexus. My wife refused to drive it again. Now, we just found out that on August 28th, three weeks after our experience, California highway patrol officer mark saylor and three of his family members were killed when the Lexus ES 350 they were driving suddenly accelerated. Lexus is again blaming it on the floor mat.
