I have had a couple of unsafe situations with my car due to inadequate throttle response when trying to pass a car or merge into a freeway. The delay in accelerating, due to the transmission trying to find the appropriate gear to match the engine acceleration required. I was told by the service folks at the dealership that unfortunately the condition is inherent in the design (8-speed auto). Mercedes benz had the same problem with their new 7-speed transmission until they fixed it.
