Lexus RX300 owners have reported 6 problems related to equipment (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My Lexus headlight lenses become scratched which diminishes distance illuminated and brightness of illumination. Objects on the road are not visible as quickly or as clearly as they are with clear (unscratched) lenses. These defective plastic lenses that are scratched up by particles of the road may be responsible for people, animals, objects and vehicles being hit at night. The dealers tell me to have to lenses buffed and pay for that myself. When the scratches are first buffed out, I have improved safety at night because the illumination is brighter and visibility distance is greater. The cost of replacing the headlights is $851 each for my vehicle. The replacement has the same defect as my existing headlight. My vehicle is 14 years old, and nothing has been done by my car company to correct this defect in its manufacturing process. There is a serious need to return to glass headlights since they don't scratch and last, in most cases, the life of the vehicle. I have had my headlights buffed several times over the years, but the buffing lasts a shorter amount of time with each buffing. Other car manufacturers with these headlight problems are Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, BMW, Honda, Acura, and chevy. Plastic lenses are defective parts for front headlights. They need to be banned and glass headlights restored. The car manufacturers are endangering their customers' lives with this part. I feel a recall is in order and that owners of the cars with these defective headlight lenses should receive free buffing and free headlight replacements until the manufacturers correct the problem with a lens that will remain clear. Date entered for "when did this happen?" is simply the date I took the photos. Problem is ongoing not single incident. Let me know if I did not add the documentation correctly. I will try again.

With little/no warning, automatic transmission (2wd) failed. All gears (p,r,n,d,2,1) worked like neutral gear. If this would've occurred a few minutes earlier, my children and I (located at a sharp turn over a steep hill) could've been seriously injured or killed. Apparently, this is a common problem in Lexus Rx300's from year 1999-2002. How many early transmission failures does it take to have a recall?.
Subject: sudden acceleration Lexus 2002--near fatal crash comments: on 3. 16. 2012 at 8 :30 am I pulled into a parking spot in a parking garage in baltimore, maryland. The car was stopping in a parking space. Suddenly, the engine starting revving up and the car suddenly accelerated at such a high speed that the car jumped over the parking barricade and cables, went airborn and crash landed at the opposite end of the garage on the level below. If it had landed 12 inches further, it would have gone over the 6th story of the parking garage. The brakes did not work and prior to this, the car was almost stopped. I have owned this car for 8 years with one previous owner. I always do the recommended routine maintenance. The car was beyond repair and was totaled.
I own a 1999 Lexus Rx300 fwd. I have had multiple problems with this vehicle. When I bought it Jan 2008 ignition coil 1 and 3 failed. Two months later 3, , and 6 failed. Both times when vehicle failed I was driving on interstate 85 vehicle would not go over 45 and would not go into overdrive!!! now the transmission is acting up. It is slipping and also decides to gear down when doing 70mph down the interstate. Was at a stop light and the light turned green and the vehicle wouldn't move, finally caught gear and jerked. Was almost hit by oncoming traffic. I do not feel safe in this so called "luxury vehicle". It is still under extended warranty, and is going to Lexus dealership tomm. I cant wait to hear what they say the out come is. Car has been fully serviced and up to date. Just came out of Lexus dealership 2 weeks ago having problems!!??? now its going back. Lexus needs to recall the transmissions they are faulty!! I have read several complaints and not one action from the manufacturer yet?? they have already replace rear main seals, cam seals, and something else at 2000. 00 dollars. . . Ugh when its cold, it takes the car about 12 mins to go into overdrive. I keep hearing a whining sound, and shudder sounds. I only have like 16,000 miles left on warranty. So some one please tell me what to do or where to go!!! this is such a headache!!.

Not my vehicle, but on other vehicle on the road. Numerous time I have happened upon a newer Lexus RX 300 (2002 or 2003 model??) with no tail lights, traveling along public roadways well after dark. In a recent incident, I was on a multi-lane freeway and had a chance to pull along side a Lexus RX 300 with no tail lights, glancing over at the driver compartment of the RX 300, I noted that the dash/instrument lights were on! and, the daytime running lights (dlrs) were providing some forward illumination for the vehicle. I later discovered that the RX 300 vehicles always have their instrument panel illuminated, thus with the combination of the dlrs, it seems that the drivers of Lexus Rx300 SUV's frequently forget to turn their headlights on. There is an "auto" feature, but if not used, the vehicle is very prone leaving the driver with a false sense that the lights are turned on- which is very dangerous. I can not think of any other vehicle that illuminates the dash without at least turning on the tail/parking lamps. I feel this is a defect in this vehicle design that could needlessly lead to accidents.
