1 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2006 Lincoln LS

Failure Date: 05/29/2009

Enclosed is a detailed description of a recent michelin tire failure on my 2006 Lincoln Ls. On Friday, may 29, 2009 I was returning to south florida from a trip to dallas, TX. I was driving on I-10 about 15 miles east of lafayette, la. I suddenly heard a slapping/flapping noise coming from the left rear of the car. I looked at my outside rear view mirror and observed pieces of the rear left tire peeling away from the tire. Then the car lurched as the metal rim of the left rear wheel made contact with the pavement. I luckily was able to steer the car into the right side emergency lane. There was a steady stream of vehicles racing by me, many of them 18-wheeler semi-tractor trailers. As soon as there was an opportunity I exited the car, as did my companion. I walked along the guardrail and to the rear of the car to view the left rear wheel. I could see that all of the tire except the sidewalls were gone and the rim was badly damaged from making contact with the pavement. I called the Lincoln emergency road service number on my cell phone for a tow truck. Meanwhile an louisiana state trooper arrived and parked behind my car and waited for the tow truck that arrived about 30 minutes later. My car was towed to the nearest authorized Lincoln-Mercury dealer in breaux bridge, la. The Ford service department ordered and installed a new replacement rim and tire on Saturday, may 30th. They placed the two sidewalls still on the damaged rim in my trunk and I continued my trip home. Based on what I heard and witnessed when parts of the michelin tire separated from the sidewall and rim it appears that the tire failed due to a construction defect. The photos show the extent of damage caused to the tire that separated the tread casing from the sidewalls. Here is more important information for your records. I have in my possession the part of the destroyed tire containing the michelin tire description and the dot code. It proves beyond a doubt that it was the michelin tire.

2 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Lincoln LS

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

My michelin pilot sport ms tire 235/45z/r17 developed a bubble on the inside wall of the tire and leaked air. The tire was used under a normal comuting routine and never placed under any unusual stress or road conditions. It could not be repaired and had to be replaced. This is consistent with the recall of 255/35zr20 97y extra load. I believe the 235/45z/r17 sport ms is also defective as it has the same characteristics. The old tire was left at the tire dealer and was disposed. A letter from the dealer confirming this condition is possible.

Rear driver's tire sidewall ripped at 15 mph with 100 miles on 2005 Lincoln Ls. Tire - continental contitouring p225/55r16 cv95, dot #act4 465b 1904 per continental, tire manufactured in columbus? on 19th week of 2004 appearance of the steel cord exposed in sideway appears very thin. Dealer agreed to replace tire, but haven't gotten car to dealer yet. Call to continental complaint center (1800-847-3349) resulted in a statement that the tire was not known to have any issues. My obvious concern is the safety of this tire but continental said there is no safety issue!!!.

Consumers CO-worker noticed that the tire was low, air was then put in the tire, however it was then discovered that a finishing nail was embedded in the sidewall, the vehicle was taken to the goodyear dealer, and the mechanic kept the tire for a few hours to perform a test, he then stated the nail did not go through the tire and it was not necessary to patch or purchase a new tire, on Monday June 24, 2002, consumer noticed the tire was low again, the vehicle was taken back to goodyear, and the mechanic stated he would investigate the tire further, the mechanics discovered that the tire had a sidewall plug and stated that it was not recommended to repair the tire in that manner or even drive with that type of repair, a new tire would need to be purchased because it was illegal to patch or plug in the sidewall, the dealer claims that they never plugged or patch the sidewall.
